INSIDE
The Weeknd is a savior for us because traditional R&B has just fallen by
the wayside, said Wynter. Were hoping that were going to encourage more
people who want to sing to bring music to our radio station.
Cumulus corporate PD of rock formats Troy Hanson drew huge laughs during that same CRS panel when he imitated a throaty, modern-rock screech,
essentially criticizing the lack of melody in his format. He has become an advocate for injecting adult alternative album rock into his playlists, basically
enhancing the singability of his stations.
We need to find some of these Black Keys and Muse artists of the world
and bring them back [to the format], he said.
Melody isnt restricted to the lead singer. Chris Lanes hooky song Fix
gets some of its mojo from Ilya Toshinskys signature guitar line, but that title
would not be as addictive without its undeniable vocal progression.
Melody is something just innately wired in us, suggests Frankie Ballard, whose forthcoming album El Rio kicks off with two ultra-melodic Chris
Stapleton compositions. You can accept that from a flute or from a harp
or from a guitar, but, generally speaking, I think people really prefer it from
another human voice, probably because thats what were communicating
with. Thats what real.
Its also mysterious. Glen Campbell, who has Alzheimers disease, needed
a teleprompter during his final tour to remember the words to Wichita Lineman and Rhinestone Cowboy, songs he had sung thousands of times before. But he could still recall the melodies. Why that is, and where that melody
comes from, still hasnt been fully explained.
I think it comes from Heaven, Brian Wilson, noted for such indelible
melodies as God Only Knows and Good Vibrations, said a dozen years
ago. Wilson treasures his membership in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, in
great part because it puts him in a league with another of pop musics melody
studs, Burt Bacharach (Walk On By, The Look of Love), who likewise
cant cite a source for that aspect of his songwriting talent. You either have
it or you dont, he said in 2005.
The process of writing melodies has changed in recent years with the growth
and accessibility of recording equipment. Songwriters have historically accompanied themselves on guitar or piano while creating lead lines, but the
hip-hop and pop genres began using loops recorded chord progressions
that repeat and pre-recorded tracks to start the writing process. The melody
is a late development in that scenario, and the results can be underwhelming
if that melody is treated as an afterthought.
It is important if youre writing to a track to pause it, bust out an acoustic
guitar and test [the song] over just an acoustic guitar, says Dan + Shays Dan
Smyers. If it holds up over that, then it was the right thing. And if not, then
you need to go back and rework it.
Songwriters who create melodies that sit atop of those pre-recorded
productions are typically referred to in pop music as topliners, a term
that likely draws some derision from people who have written melodies
the more traditional way. Alternating between tracks and the standard
guitar/vocal approach, though, happens frequently among many Nashville songwriters.
You have to kind of switch between the two, says Mooney, because sometimes youll be writing on an acoustic guitar, and after the fifth song youre
like, This is all the same stuff that weve been doing. It kind of sounds the
same. But then when you hear a track, its like, OK, this is something different, and it kind of inspires things in your mind. Youve got to trick your brain
into creativity sometimes.
Philadelphia soul songwriter/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff
responsible for such lyrically astute songs as Love Train, If You Dont
Know Me by Now and Me and Mrs. Jones recognize that their words
arent nearly as inspiring on a page as they are when attached to a series of
notes that enhance the emotions behind them.
Melody is important, said Huff following a Warner/Chappell event on
May 5 in Nashville. If you didnt have the melody, what is it?
The songwriting community in Nashville hasnt forgotten the importance of
that component. Its one of the underappreciated reasons for countrys boom
in recent years. The words are still widely regarded as the driving force in the
genres material. But when compared to other genres particularly modern
rock and hip-hop that have underplayed melodys importance, countrys
consistent devotion to the part the listener is most likely to sing back is key to
the genres current popularity.
To me, its not a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, says Ballard, if its
just peanut butter.
Carrie Underwood met with WNCY Green Bay, Wis., staff when she
played the Resch Center on May 5. From left: WNCY PD Dan Stone,
Underwood, WNCY music director Charli McKenzie and Arista
Nashville regional promotion manager Luke Jensen.

With tens of thousands of visitors expected in Nashville for the CMA Music
Festival June 9-12, the lineups for previously announced side events are filling out and new attractions continue to appear on a fairly regular basis. Just
announced in the last week are a Pandora event and concerts headlined by
Craig Morgan and Ty Herndon. Meanwhile, the Grand Ole Opry has set its
talent lineup for June 7, an edition of the WSM-AM Nashville show that typically generates a lot of tourist attention.
The latest developments on the festivals adjunct attractions include:
Jake Owen, Lauren Alaina, LoCash, Danielle Bradbery and Mickey
Guyton are among the latest roster additions for the 26th annual City of Hope
Celebrity Softball Game on June 7 at First Tennessee Park. Bobby Bones,
Jessie James Decker, Tristan McIntosh, Nashville actor Jonathan Jackson and former MLB pitcher Barry Zito are also stepping up for the benefit.
Chris Janson and Stoney Creek artist Lindsay Ell will play a free Opry
Plaza Party on June 7 at the Grand Ole Opry House, leading up to that nights
two Opry shows. On the bill for those official Opry performances are Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker, Janson and Nashville actor Charles Esten.
Pandora booked a June 7 country concert for listeners at Marathon Music
Works with Tyler Farr, Kip Moore, Cam and Brent Cobb.
Kane Brown and Chris Lane committed to the 12th annual Stars for
Second Harvest benefit at the Ryman Auditorium on June 7. Big Loud Shirt
founder Craig Wiseman will host a writers-in-the-round segment during
the night with fellow songwriters Shane McAnally (Follow Your Arrow,
American Kids) and Josh Osborne (Sangria, Take Your Time).
Morgan announced a free June 8 concert at the Wildhorse Saloon to celebrate the June 3 release of a new album, A Whole Lot More to Me. The guest
list includes Ell and Third Day vocalist Mac Powell, plus Hailey Whitters,
Jillian Cardarelli and singer-songwriter Adam Sanders (Hell of a Night).
Herndon has planned a June 9 appearance at City Winery. Support acts
include Jason Michael Carroll, Andy Griggs, Kree Harrison, Julie Roberts, Radio Romance and SaraBeth. That show should not be confused with
the LGBT-supportive Concert for Love and Acceptance, which Herndon introduced during the festival in 2015. A second installment in that series is
planned for later in 2016.

Little Big Town is in the running for the Billboard Chart Achievement Award,
a fan-voted trophy that will be presented during the May 22 telecast of the
Billboard Music Awards on ABC. The nomination recognizes Girl Crush
spending 13 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs, a record for a group. The
balloting pits the band against Adele, Drake, Rihanna and The Weeknd.
The awards will also feature Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani performing
Go Ahead and Break My Heart in their first televised duet since the singles
debut on Hot Country Songs. The chart achievement vote can be cast here.
Country music is a national format m

for the womans hand, knowing she might destroy all his dreams.
Especially if youve been hurt before, its a brave thing to do, says James.
They did a quick work tape. A short time later, they cut a more formal demo
that used a bass and electric guitar an octave or so apart to form a moody intro.
Kenny Chesney, who was working on the album Welcome to the Fishbowl
at the time, was the first to respond when Are You With Me got pitched.
He has never emailed me back faster about
a song, says McAnally.
Chesney eventually let it go, and MV2
Entertainment creative director Clay Myers
then the vp/GM for Barbara Orbisons Still
Working Music pitched it to Easton, who was
recording at the time. Corbin was gung-ho
about Are You With Me.
The dude in the song, hes throwing it
all out there, says Corbin, and thats what
its about is throwing all care to the wind and
going for it.
Producer Carson Chamberlain (Billy
Currington, Mark Wills) oversaw the s ession
at Nashvilles Sound Stage, with steel player
Paul Franklin f illing a lot of cracks and
crevasses with long, lonesome notes.
The hardest part of that kind of song
is p eople not play i n g to o much, says
C hamberlain. Sparseness is your friend on
that.
Mercury was so convinced of the songs
p otential that the label shot a video for it in
2012 when Corbin did the clip for All Over
the Road. But with Universal Music Group
(UMG) in transition, Are You With Me never became a single during the
run of that album.
Meanwhile, Lost Frequencies his stage name comes from his penchant
for making dance mixes out of forgotten tracks had his ear open for a song
with a lonesome guitar/bass instrumental vibe. When he heard the intro to
Are You With Me on a SoundCloud link, that became the song.
His version went platinum and/or multiplatinum in numerous countries,
though the songwriters knew nothing about it until it was in full gear.
German-based BMG had publishing on it, and executives there were supposedly
grooving to the song on the radio, not even realizing it was their copyright
because it had been changed so much.
This kid licensed it; he did everything he was supposed to do legally, says
McBride. It kind of fell through some cracks, and we didnt know about it.
Lost Frequencies YouTube video has now amassed more than 170 million
views, and at least some consumers have done some homework and discovered
Corbins recording. Corbin and UMG felt strongly enough about his original
version that it was added to his next album, About to Get Real, when it was
released June 30, 2015. Mercury finally issued it to radio via Play MPE on
April 11 with a long lead time the official add date is May 23 and with a
new solo, courtesy of guitarist Derek Wells. Its at No. 58 on Country Airplay.
The single version got sped up just a couple clicks, too, though not enough
to damage the fragility Corbin creates with his shy phrasing. Thats what the
good ones do, says Chamberlain. They make you feel it.
Corbin has been doggedly playing it in his live shows from the beginning,
and he and the writers are understandably relieved that Are You With Me is
finally getting its chance stateside. His frequencies are no longer lost.
Its about time, says Corbin. Its my favorite song.
