Fans Like The Sound Of That: Country

Stays Relevant With Melodic Emphasis
Keith Urban was specifically promoting his new album, Ripcord, when he spoke to USA Today earlier this month, but he
could have easily been talking about country music as a whole.
Melody is key, he told music journalist Bob Doerschuk.
How many songs do we sing along to where we dont even
know the words? Melody
pulls us in.
Urba n h i nted at a n
essential part of music
thats not easy to verbalize. Def ining the outdoorsy lyrical theme in
Luke Bryans Huntin,
Fishin and Lovin Every
Day or grasping the ref lective production values of Tim McGraws
Humble and Kind are
DAN + SHAY
fairly routine. But explaining the arc of a melody is much harder. Theres a reason Martin Mull once said,
Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.
Still, if you listen to some of the current top 20 titles on Hot
Country Songs Maren Morris My Church, Jon Pardis
Head Over Boots, Old Dominions Snapback or Urbans
Wasted Time, for starters its clear that theres a strong
melodic thread running through the genre. Theres no reliable
way to measure it, but country is arguably producing great melo-

dies as consistently as any other genre at this moment in time.

Its ironic, because country has long been praised for its lyrical prowess.
Right now, I feel like country has taken the best of everything, all the melodies and phrasing, and then theyve just
continued to tell great
s tor ies , s ay s D a n +
Shays Shay Mooney,
a co -w riter of Rascal
Flatts aptly titled I

A great lyric is awesome,
you know, but if its not a
good melody youre not
going to care what theyre
saying.
Some other genres are
struggling with a shortBALLARD
age of melody, based on
the discourse during a
Country Radio Seminar panel, From the Outside Looking
In: Other Formats Give Their Take on Country, in February.
iHeartMedia vp urban and urban AC Doc Wynter, programming at a time when rap has injected plenty of spoken-word into
his format, said hes seeking more music that recalls the sound
of Smokey Robinson or Luther Vandross, artists whose biggest successes relied on such ultra-melodic titles as Tears of
a Clown and Stop to Love.

INSIDE

MAY 16, 2016 | PAGE 1 OF 19

The Weeknd is a savior for us because traditional R&B has just fallen by
the wayside, said Wynter. Were hoping that were going to encourage more
people who want to sing to bring music to our radio station.
Cumulus corporate PD of rock formats Troy Hanson drew huge laughs during that same CRS panel when he imitated a throaty, modern-rock screech,
essentially criticizing the lack of melody in his format. He has become an advocate for injecting adult alternative album rock into his playlists, basically
enhancing the singability of his stations.
We need to find some of these Black Keys and Muse artists of the world
and bring them back [to the format], he said.
Melody isnt restricted to the lead singer. Chris Lanes hooky song Fix
gets some of its mojo from Ilya Toshinskys signature guitar line, but that title
would not be as addictive without its undeniable vocal progression.
Melody is something just innately wired in us, suggests Frankie Ballard, whose forthcoming album El Rio kicks off with two ultra-melodic Chris
Stapleton compositions. You can accept that from a flute or from a harp
or from a guitar, but, generally speaking, I think people really prefer it from
another human voice, probably because thats what were communicating
with. Thats what real.
Its also mysterious. Glen Campbell, who has Alzheimers disease, needed
a teleprompter during his final tour to remember the words to Wichita Lineman and Rhinestone Cowboy, songs he had sung thousands of times before. But he could still recall the melodies. Why that is, and where that melody
comes from, still hasnt been fully explained.
I think it comes from Heaven, Brian Wilson, noted for such indelible
melodies as God Only Knows and Good Vibrations, said a dozen years
ago. Wilson treasures his membership in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, in
great part because it puts him in a league with another of pop musics melody
studs, Burt Bacharach (Walk On By, The Look of Love), who likewise
cant cite a source for that aspect of his songwriting talent. You either have
it or you dont, he said in 2005.
The process of writing melodies has changed in recent years with the growth
and accessibility of recording equipment. Songwriters have historically accompanied themselves on guitar or piano while creating lead lines, but the
hip-hop and pop genres began using loops recorded chord progressions
that repeat and pre-recorded tracks to start the writing process. The melody
is a late development in that scenario, and the results can be underwhelming
if that melody is treated as an afterthought.
It is important if youre writing to a track to pause it, bust out an acoustic
guitar and test [the song] over just an acoustic guitar, says Dan + Shays Dan
Smyers. If it holds up over that, then it was the right thing. And if not, then
you need to go back and rework it.
Songwriters who create melodies that sit atop of those pre-recorded
productions are typically referred to in pop music as topliners, a term
that likely draws some derision from people who have written melodies
the more traditional way. Alternating between tracks and the standard
guitar/vocal approach, though, happens frequently among many Nashville songwriters.
You have to kind of switch between the two, says Mooney, because sometimes youll be writing on an acoustic guitar, and after the fifth song youre
like, This is all the same stuff that weve been doing. It kind of sounds the
same. But then when you hear a track, its like, OK, this is something different, and it kind of inspires things in your mind. Youve got to trick your brain
into creativity sometimes.
Philadelphia soul songwriter/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff
responsible for such lyrically astute songs as Love Train, If You Dont
Know Me by Now and Me and Mrs. Jones recognize that their words
arent nearly as inspiring on a page as they are when attached to a series of
notes that enhance the emotions behind them.
Melody is important, said Huff following a Warner/Chappell event on
May 5 in Nashville. If you didnt have the melody, what is it?
The songwriting community in Nashville hasnt forgotten the importance of
that component. Its one of the underappreciated reasons for countrys boom
in recent years. The words are still widely regarded as the driving force in the
genres material. But when compared to other genres particularly modern
rock and hip-hop that have underplayed melodys importance, countrys
consistent devotion to the part the listener is most likely to sing back is key to
the genres current popularity.
To me, its not a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, says Ballard, if its
just peanut butter.

Leads Parade Of Top 10 Debuts
to me is beyond anything I couldve imagined.
Urbans streak of 36 Country Airplay top 10s is the longest active run (as well
as the longest in the charts 26-year history). Underwood boasts the secondlongest active top 10 streak: 23 in a row starting with her 2006 debut, Jesus,
Take the Wheel.
HERE HE IS Cole Swindells sophomore studio album, You Should Be Here
(Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville [WMN]), debuts at No. 2 on Top
C ountry A lbums with a career-best 65,000 sold. His debut, Cole Swindell,
also opened at No. 2, in 2014, with 63,000.

URBAN

CYNDI, CHAPIN CHART Cyndi Lauper makes her first

visit to Top Country Albums, as Detour (Sire/Rhino) starts
at No. 4 (16,000). Recorded in Nashville, the set, produced
by Lauper and Tony Brown, sports covers of such country
classics as Walkin After Midnight and Heartaches by
the Number. Guests include Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris,
Jewel, Alison Krauss and Willie Nelson. (For more about
Laupers Detour album, see The Stark Report on page 14.)
Also arriving in the Top Country Albums top 10 is Mary

ninth top 10 and first since The Age of Miracles (No. 6) in 2010.

DUETS DEBUT Blake Sheltons Go Ahead and Break My

Heart, featuring Gwen Stefani (Warner Bros./WMN), bows on Hot Country
Songs at No. 14, marking Stefanis first entrance on any Billboard country chart.
After the couple, who co-wrote the song, performed it on NBCs The Voice on
May 5, it enters Country Digital Songs at No. 2 with 58,000 sold. The collab
is from Sheltons 12th studio album, If Im Honest, due May 20.
Also making her country chart debut is Demi Lovato, who is featured on Brad
Paisleys Without a Fight (Arista Nashville), which enters Country Airplay
at No. 27 (9 million impressions) and Hot Country Songs at No. 48. The song
previews Paisleys upcoming 12th studio set.

Keith Urbans eighth studio album, Ripcord (Hit Red/Capitol Nashville/

Universal Music Group Nashville), bounds in at No. 1 on Billboards Top
C ountry Albums chart (dated May 28), selling 93,000 copies in the week
ending May 12, according to Nielsen Music. On the all-genre Billboard 200,
it arrives at No. 4 (106,000 equivalent album units).
Urban earns his fifth No. 1 on Top Country Albums, all of which have d
ebuted
at the summit. His first four were Be Here, released in 2004 with a debut sales
week of 148,000; Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing (2006, 270,000); D
efying
Gravity (2009, 172,000); and Fuse (2013, 98,000).
Urban co-wrote five of the new albums tracks and co-produced the set, which
features collaborations with Carrie Underwood (featured
on The Fighter), as well as Nile Rodgers and Pitbull (Sun
Dont Let Me Down).
I went into the making of Ripcord with a real creative
liberation, Urban tells Billboard. My dad was a drummer,
and I feel like that rhythmic DNA in me drove so much of the
energy and spirit in the recording sessions. Its an incredible
feeling to see it hit No. 1.
The current single from the set, Wasted Time, is its
third, following John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16, which
peaked at No. 2 on both Hot Country Songs and Country
Airplay, and Break on Me, which reached Nos. 6 and 1,
respectively.
Concurrently, Wasted Time enters the Country
Airplay top 10, lifting 11-10 (26.7 million in audience, up 3
percent), becoming Urbans 36th consecutive (and total) top 10 on the survey
(counting only promoted and non-seasonal singles). The run started with Your
Everything in 2000.
How does Urban remain relevant? I grew up with equal parts contemporary
country and top 40 influences, he says. Ive always loved hooks, riffs and
melodies you can sing along with. Universal themes seemed to be present in a
lot of the songs I heard as a kid, so it has influenced the way I write.
When I moved to Nashville, I just hoped I could hear a song of mine on the
radio one day. The fact that country radio and the listeners have been so good

CMA MUSIC FEST CALENDAR FILLS UP

With tens of thousands of visitors expected in Nashville for the CMA Music
Festival June 9-12, the lineups for previously announced side events are filling out and new attractions continue to appear on a fairly regular basis. Just
announced in the last week are a Pandora event and concerts headlined by
Craig Morgan and Ty Herndon. Meanwhile, the Grand Ole Opry has set its
talent lineup for June 7, an edition of the WSM-AM Nashville show that typically generates a lot of tourist attention.
The latest developments on the festivals adjunct attractions include:
Jake Owen, Lauren Alaina, LoCash, Danielle Bradbery and Mickey
Guyton are among the latest roster additions for the 26th annual City of Hope
Celebrity Softball Game on June 7 at First Tennessee Park. Bobby Bones,
Jessie James Decker, Tristan McIntosh, Nashville actor Jonathan Jackson and former MLB pitcher Barry Zito are also stepping up for the benefit.
Chris Janson and Stoney Creek artist Lindsay Ell will play a free Opry
Plaza Party on June 7 at the Grand Ole Opry House, leading up to that nights
two Opry shows. On the bill for those official Opry performances are Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker, Janson and Nashville actor Charles Esten.
Pandora booked a June 7 country concert for listeners at Marathon Music
Works with Tyler Farr, Kip Moore, Cam and Brent Cobb.
Kane Brown and Chris Lane committed to the 12th annual Stars for
Second Harvest benefit at the Ryman Auditorium on June 7. Big Loud Shirt
founder Craig Wiseman will host a writers-in-the-round segment during
the night with fellow songwriters Shane McAnally (Follow Your Arrow,
American Kids) and Josh Osborne (Sangria, Take Your Time).
Morgan announced a free June 8 concert at the Wildhorse Saloon to celebrate the June 3 release of a new album, A Whole Lot More to Me. The guest
list includes Ell and Third Day vocalist Mac Powell, plus Hailey Whitters,
Jillian Cardarelli and singer-songwriter Adam Sanders (Hell of a Night).
Herndon has planned a June 9 appearance at City Winery. Support acts
include Jason Michael Carroll, Andy Griggs, Kree Harrison, Julie Roberts, Radio Romance and SaraBeth. That show should not be confused with
the LGBT-supportive Concert for Love and Acceptance, which Herndon introduced during the festival in 2015. A second installment in that series is
planned for later in 2016.

Corbins Are You With Me Finally A

U.S. Single After European Detour
Easton Corbins Are You With Me has barely found its way onto the C
ountry
Airplay chart, but it has already won song of the year.
Odd as that sounds, its true, although the song of the year win was at the
Echo Awards in Germany, and it was for an EDM version of the song by a
Belgian DJ, known professionally as Lost Frequencies. On top of it, the win
didnt even cover the whole song his version, released in October 2014, used
only the first four lines of Are You With Me.
Its pretty random, says Corbin of the
songs journey. Its just one verse over and
over again, but man, this song became a huge
hit over in Europe.
Big enough that K FC licensed it for a
commercial in Russia. And yet, Corbin and
the songs three writers are all still waiting to
see if it will work in the United States.
You have no idea how strange that whole
ride has been, says song w riter Shane
McAnally (Noise, T-Shirt).
Not just strange, but long. Written May 4,
2011, at a Franklin, Tenn., cabin owned by the
former McBride & The Ride singer/songwriter
Terry McBride (Play Something Country, I
Keep On Loving You), Are You With Me is
now 5 years old, rather mature for a song that
was in high demand when it first came into
existence. Songwriter Tommy Lee James (My
Eyes, Shes My Kind of Rain) had come up
with the title that morning, and while Are You
With Me sounds like a phrase a soldier might
CORBIN
use on the battlefield, James thought of it as a
no-brainer for concert conversation.
There was an artist looking for a song that would work really well in a
live situation, and I thought asking the audience Are you with me would
be a really interesting take on that, recalls James. What I didnt realize is
it works in a larger sense, too. It can work as a love song, like I want to do all
this stuff in life, are you with me? Its almost like a marriage-proposal song,
if that makes sense: I want to have all these adventures. Do you want to do
them with me, too?
McBride grabbed a bass, while James and McAnally strummed guitars,
and they painted an escapist, vacation-like picture of a Mexican beach and
margaritas for the first verse of Are You With Me. The imagery sounds like
a celebration, but as the songs primary character describes a sunny potential
future, theres also a cloud of doubt his proposal could get rejected, leaving
him to face the world alone. They cast the verse with several minor chords,
hinting at the uncertainty in the mans crossroads moment.
Thats all in the melody, notes McAnally, because the lyric doesnt say
that.
After that four-line verse, they launched right into a second one, this time
focusing on the womans skin and the coupling he has in mind.
In the beginning, it could be anybody, which is why its kind of brilliant of
Lost Frequencies, says McBride. Dance by the water, drink margaritas
that could be anybody. We wanted to bring her into it to make it interesting.
The chorus moved into more major chords, lifting the melody into a higher
range and underscoring the adventure of the proposition We can chase the
wild dreams/Live like crazy before settling back into that scary q
uestion:
Are you with me?
The third verse would delve even further into the emotional risk I wanna
love so hard that it rips my heart out as the guy bathes in vulnerability, a sking

for the womans hand, knowing she might destroy all his dreams.
Especially if youve been hurt before, its a brave thing to do, says James.
They did a quick work tape. A short time later, they cut a more formal demo
that used a bass and electric guitar an octave or so apart to form a moody intro.
Kenny Chesney, who was working on the album Welcome to the Fishbowl
at the time, was the first to respond when Are You With Me got pitched.
He has never emailed me back faster about
a song, says McAnally.
Chesney eventually let it go, and MV2
Entertainment creative director Clay Myers
then the vp/GM for Barbara Orbisons Still
Working Music pitched it to Easton, who was
recording at the time. Corbin was gung-ho
about Are You With Me.
The dude in the song, hes throwing it
all out there, says Corbin, and thats what
its about is throwing all care to the wind and
going for it.
Producer Carson Chamberlain (Billy
Currington, Mark Wills) oversaw the s ession
at Nashvilles Sound Stage, with steel player
Paul Franklin f illing a lot of cracks and
crevasses with long, lonesome notes.
The hardest part of that kind of song
is p eople not play i n g to o much, says
C hamberlain. Sparseness is your friend on
that.
Mercury was so convinced of the songs
p otential that the label shot a video for it in
2012 when Corbin did the clip for All Over
the Road. But with Universal Music Group
(UMG) in transition, Are You With Me never became a single during the
run of that album.
Meanwhile, Lost Frequencies his stage name comes from his penchant
for making dance mixes out of forgotten tracks had his ear open for a song
with a lonesome guitar/bass instrumental vibe. When he heard the intro to
Are You With Me on a SoundCloud link, that became the song.
His version went platinum and/or multiplatinum in numerous countries,
though the songwriters knew nothing about it until it was in full gear.
German-based BMG had publishing on it, and executives there were supposedly
grooving to the song on the radio, not even realizing it was their copyright
because it had been changed so much.
This kid licensed it; he did everything he was supposed to do legally, says
McBride. It kind of fell through some cracks, and we didnt know about it.
Lost Frequencies YouTube video has now amassed more than 170 million
views, and at least some consumers have done some homework and discovered
Corbins recording. Corbin and UMG felt strongly enough about his original
version that it was added to his next album, About to Get Real, when it was
released June 30, 2015. Mercury finally issued it to radio via Play MPE on
April 11 with a long lead time the official add date is May 23 and with a
new solo, courtesy of guitarist Derek Wells. Its at No. 58 on Country Airplay.
The single version got sped up just a couple clicks, too, though not enough
to damage the fragility Corbin creates with his shy phrasing. Thats what the
good ones do, says Chamberlain. They make you feel it.
Corbin has been doggedly playing it in his live shows from the beginning,
and he and the writers are understandably relieved that Are You With Me is
finally getting its chance stateside. His frequencies are no longer lost.
Its about time, says Corbin. Its my favorite song.

THE STARK REPORT PHYLLIS STARK phyllis.stark@billboard.com

Cyndi Lauper Explains Her

Detour Into Country Music
Just to clear the air, Cyndi Lauper is not the latest in a long string of pop stars
attempting to go country. Her new release, Detour, an album full of classic country song covers, is less an indicator of the veteran pop stars desire to
change genres than it is a sincere homage to a dozen tunes she grew up listening to on a transistor radio in her aunts kitchen and falling in love with.
That she happens to have enlisted country luminaries including Willie Nelson, Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris, bluegrass superstar
Alison Krauss and pop-turned-country chanteuse Jewel for
the project merely adds heft to her purpose as she lends her
vocal skills to songs both famous (I Fall to Pieces, Heartaches by the Number) and somewhat obscure (Youre the
Reason Our Kids Are Ugly), largely culled from the 40s,
50s and 60s. Lauper recorded the album in Nashville with
veteran country producer Tony Brown and a crop of Music
Citys A-list session players. Sire Records founder Seymour
Stein served as both the projects executive producer and
its instigator.
It was exciting to come here and make a record thats
an homage to country, says Lauper of Nashville. Its a
real singers album.
The cotton candy-haired Lauper, looking utterly ageless
at 62, sat down with Billboard Country Update in Nashville
to talk about the origins of the project (which was released
LAUPER
May 6 on Sire/Rhino and debuts at No. 4 on Top Country
Albums) and whats left on the bucket list for a star who has
already earned Grammy, Emmy and Tony Awards. That list, she says, almost
certainly includes writing another Broadway show following the success of
her hit Kinky Boots. Being just one award away from the coveted EGOT designation (for those renowned few who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar
and Tony Award), Lauper admits, I want that Oscar, and hopes to land it
someday as a film composer.
While she has now worked in musical formats as diverse as Broadway, pop,
dance and blues, as well as having done both acting and reality TV (the latter
as a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice), Lauper says that to her, Perfor-

When it came time to select songs for Detour, Lauper says, I tried to choose
variety, because I dont like listening to a record where its [all] the same I
chose things that had variety to them so you could go on a journey and have
different storytellers. But they were all stories that I could kind of believe.
I wasnt good in school, so I think I just learned on my feet, she notes, adding that she eventually discovered you have to diversify,
because if you dont diversify, youre stuck in one thing with
the gatekeepers, and I just will not have it. I dont want them
telling me what I can and cant do. I dont want to be stopped.
I want to keep growing. I want to learn. I love to learn.
How are you going to know what you could do if you never
try something new? she asks. You might fall on your butt,
but if you dont try, you dont know, and you wont grow.
She praises her fans, who she says have stuck with her
through every musical journey and experiment. They will
get to hear her take on country music live on her current 35city Detour tour, which features Boy George on a few dates.
Onstage, shes mixing the classic country songs with some of
her best-loved pop hits, and jokes of her stage attire, Maybe
Ill just break down and buy that Electric Horseman outfit.
Asked if she had a favorite among the country star collaborators on her album, Lauper says Gill was pretty awesome and helped me through Detour Hes a sweet, really wonderful and incredibly gifted musician, and he sings
like butter.
Her words are less kind when it comes to presidential candidate Donald
Trump, whom Lauper worked for as a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice
in 2010. It sure doesnt sound like shell be voting for him in the fall.
Its a scary prospect because you cant inflate people to violence, she says
of Trumps rhetoric. You cant talk that kind of talk. If you want to be president, you cant talk like that.
Then she adds with a laugh, Im not running for president. Im just trying
to sell this record.

Johnny Horton
Took A Little
Trip To No. 1
The Battle of New Orleans
topped Hot Country Songs
and the Billboard Hot 100

MAY 16, 2016 | PAGE 19 OF 19

On May 18, 1959, Johnny Hortons

The Battle of New Orleans climbed
to No. 1 on Billboards Hot Country
Songs chart for the first of 10 weeks
on top. The history lesson set to a
rockabilly beat also had crossover
appeal, topping the Billboard Hot
100 for six weeks.
New Orleans won the 1960
Grammy Award for best c ountry &
western recording. It was w ritten
in 1936 by Jimmy D riftwood.
A h istor y teacher at t he t i me,
Driftwood penned it to get students
interested in the storied battle, the
final clash of the War of 1812.

The song became the Los

ngeles-born Hortons second of
A
three Hot Country Songs No. 1s,
following When Its Springtime
in Alaska (Its Forty Below) e
arlier
in 1959 and preceding North to
Alaska in 1961.
S a d l y, h i s l a s t l e a de r w a s
achieved posthumously. On Nov. 5,
1960, while headed to Shreveport,
La., after playing a show in Austin,
the singer was killed when a truck
collided with his Cadillac on a
n arrow bridge; the driver of the
truck was intoxicated. Horton was
only 35.
