Objectives:
a. explain why animals are important to people;
b. group animals according to what they give to people;
Subject Matter: Importance of Animals to Humans
Materials: pictures of animals newspaper / magazine clippings on animal-borne disease
References: Science T.G. III pp. 81-82
Motivation/Presentation
Storytelling (prepare a story where animals are the characters of the story. It should
narrate how the characters work.
Lesson Proper
Activity: (Refer to LM, Activity 9: Useful Animals)

Give the pupils 15 minutes to do the activity.


Post Table 1 of the activity on the board.
Discuss the activity. Ask one pupil to write the name of the animal on the correct column
corresponding to the use of the animal to humans. Some animals may be written under
more than one column.
Ask: What is the following:

1. group of animals that are sources of food items?
2. group of animals that are used for tilling the field and carrying loads?

Discussion:

Discuss to the class that many animals are useful to human beings. Show them pictures.
1. There are animals that help humans do the work in the farm and fields. Horses and
carabaos are referred to as work animals because they help people do heavy work.
2. There are animals that carry load and are used as means for transportation.
3. Some animals are sources of food like chicken, pigs, cows and goats. Some animals are
source of food products like eggs, milk and honey.
Generalization:

Guide the pupils to make their own generalization by asking: Are animals useful to
humans?
Assessment:
The groups output is the assessment of group performance. Use the performance rubric.
Assignment:

Tell the pupils to bring a picture or drawing of their pet or favorite animal. They may add
a short description of the animal.

Identify the body parts used by animals for eating/getting food.
Subject Matter: Body Parts of Animals Used in Eating or Getting Food
Materials: pictures of animals, pictures of mouth parts of animals
References: Science T.G. III pp. 71-72
A. Motivation/Presentation
Activity: Which does not belong?
Have the pupils select the object that does not belong to the group.
a. ball, orange, string, egg
b. apple, rambutan, strawberry, banana
c. ballpen, paper, pencil, pentel pen
(Answers: a. string, b. banana, and c. paper)

Ask: How did you select the answer?


Emphasize that there is always a basis for grouping things. For example, animals in
the past lesson were grouped based on how they move.

Ask these questions:
Have you observed some animals in your surroundings?
Have you seen them eat? How do they eat?

Post bog pictures of animals.

Discussion:

Ask the pupils the following:


What are the animals? Have you seen these animals in the surroundings?
What body parts are used in eating? In getting food?
How do animals eat?
Through pictures of mouthparts of the different animals, emphasize the parts used in
eating or getting food.

Generalization:
Help the pupils make a generalization by asking: What body parts of animals are used in
eating or getting food?
Assignment:

Let the pupils answer the questions below as their assignment.
What are the animals in your community?

Describe the surroundings of the animals found in your community.
