Motor Protection

Motors and their protection

Some background
Motors

are everywhere

Billions

of motors in operation around the world

Used everywhere Pumps, Fans, Compressors, Conveyers,
Grinders, Mixers etcetc
Valuable assets Need to monitor and protect
Repair/replacement costs of the motors themselves
Related hazards to life and property
Production line down time
Motor

failures can be Electrical, Mechanical or

Environmental/Maintenance related
Electrical

failures account for one third of the failures

Motor Electrical Protection

Different

operating conditions leading to failure

Over

voltage or Under voltage

Over current
Voltage/Current unbalance
Phase failure/reversal
Underfrequency
Earth fault
Harmonics
And

one chip to monitor them all.

ADE7880 in motor protection application

Overvoltage and overcurrent

Undervoltage

ADE7880 monitors if the voltage on any phase drops below a user programmable
threshold for a specified number of cycles

Voltage and current unbalance

ADE7880 compares voltage and current in each phase with user programmable
threshold and generates an interrupt

ADE7880 monitors each phase voltage and current instantaneously

Phase failure/reversal

ADE7880 monitors if no zero crossings detected on any phase for a specified

number of cycles
ADE7880 can detected incorrect phase sequence

Under

frequency

ADE7880 accurately measures the line frequency on each phase

ADE7880 in motor protection application

Abnormal Harmonics

ADE7880 measures individual harmonics upto 40th order on voltage, current, Watt,
VAR and VA with high accuracy

Earth fault

Traditional approach
Traditional approach is to use a large diameter Core Balanced CT (also called
Summation or Zero sequence CT)
Large in size, expensive
CT diameter can be a limitation for high current
cables

Alternative

approach

Use regular measurement CTs on individual phases

ADE7880 computes the sum of instantaneous phase currents (ISUM), or in other words
Zero Sequence Current
ADE7880 can generate an interrupt if ISUM exceeds a user programmable threshold
Digital calibration takes care of mismatch between CTs
