Week #7: The Heart of the Gospel

Presupposed Truths (Week #1)


1. God has specifically revealed Himself through His Word (Hebrews 1:1).
2. The Lordship of God over all – “He rules everything” (I Cor. 5:18)
3. God is a redeeming God, actively seeking to save through Christ.
4. God is Triune, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, redemptively active.
5. Man is sinful and must respond to God’s salvation in faith, obedience, worship, praise and service.

What is the Gospel?


Gospel means good news.

The Biblical Story – “meta” or “grand” narrative


Genesis 1:26 – 2:3

Describe the situation in thee passages?
Describe the relationship between Creator & creation in each situation?
Therefore, is the Bible a continuous story of harmony & provision between Creator & Creation?

Atonement
What does atonement mean and/or look like?

How do you pay God back for a wasted life?
What is a fundamental problem the Gospel solves?

Leviticus 17:11 says, “For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make
atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.”

How is this passage representative of the entire Old Testament religious system?
If you sin & offer a sacrifice, did you break or keep the law?

J.I. Packer says, “The wrath of God is as personal, and as potent, as his Love; and, just as the blood-
shedding of the Lord Jesus was the direct manifesting of his Father’s love toward us, so it was the
direct averting of his Father’s wrath against us.” (Knowing God, pg 184)
