THE ANALYSIS OF PRAGMATIC TRANSLATION

1. Introduction
There are some definitions of translation. Nida states that translation consist of
reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalence of the source language
message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style. Newmark in Rudi Hartono
states that translation is rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the
author intended the text.
From the definition above the translation has the same term equivalence. The meaning,
context, though, or message of both source of reproducing in the receptor language, the closest
natural are equivalent to the message of source language. The first is meaning and secondly is
style. The message of source language must equivalent. The reader of translation who knows the
target language only will be confused if the target language is influenced by the source language.
According to Casagrade in Choliludin (2006: 26-29) there are four translation types
based on its goals. Those types are:
1. Pragmatic translation
2. Aesthetic-poetic translation
3. Ethnographic translation
4. Linguistic translation
The first analysis of this work is pragmatic translation in which it refers to the translation
of a message with an interest in accuracy of the information that was meant to be conveyed in the

source language form and it is not concerned with other aspects of the original language version.
The clearest example of the pragmatic translation is the translation of the information about
repairing a machine. (Casagrade in Choliludin: 2006: 26-29). The text is manual instruction and
label of Thermo Pot box

2. methodology
This research is classified into descriptive qualitative research. According to
Gay and Airasian descriptive research involves collecting data in order to answer concerning
current status of the object of the study and the research question. Descriptive research tries to
present the problem clearly based on the accurate data, explaining and describing the topic of a
problem based on theory used. Qualitative methods involve the collection and analysis of
primarily non-numerical data obtained from observation, document, and the like (Gay and
Airasian)
The data of this research are sentences taken from poem text entitle Sweet birthday to
you taken from website. The data consist of 5 sentences written in English and its translation in
Indonesia. The researcher classified all sentences and analyzed sentence by sentence based on
the Newmark translation methods and Molina and Albir Tranlation Techniques.

3. Discussion
Based on the data analysis, it was found that the translator used some methods as stated by
Newmark. They are: literal, faithful, free and semantic translation. While in this text, the
researcher did not find the using of word for word, adaptation and communicative translation.
The use of literal method can be seen from the following example:
1. Shatterproof

: Anti Pecah

2. New Design

: Desain Terbaru

In the example above, it was initiated that it is linear translation. The writer use SL structure
which is equivalence to TL. The shatterproof had been translated into Anti pecah and New
Design becomes Desain Baru. From this example, it indicates that the translator attempt to adjust
the SL structure to TL structure to get equivalence meaning.
