The Indian peacock, scientifically called Pavo

cristatus (Linnaeus), is designated as the
national bird of India. A swan-sized bird with a
fan shaped crown of feathers and a long
blue neck, peacock has a iridescent green
train of elongated feathers, which are raised
to form a fan to present a beautiful display in
the rainy season. The peacock or mayura as
it is called in Sanskrit, has been a part of the
Indian tradition from ages and symbolises
beauty, joy, love, wisdom and unity.

ABOUT IOAA

WELCOME ADDRESS

From IOAA PRESIDENT

Welcome to India, a beautiful country rich of

cultural and historical heritage! The 10th
IOAA will be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha,
from December 9 to 19, 2016. This is the
land where the famous king Ashoka, with his
famous edicts, once ruled. Visits to the
historical sites around Bhubaneswar may
inspire us to better understand the Indian
culture, philosophy and way of life. Some
historical sites have astronomical aspects
too, visiting which we can have s o m e idea
about the astronomical knowledge of
ancient India. Then we can compare present and ancient knowledge which may give us a
new insight.
The 10th IOAA is quite special because there will be a change of leadership of IOAA. This is
the year for presidential election, to choose the third IOAA president. Our tradition is
peaceful democratic transition of leadership and it will be good to continue the tradition to
make IOAA grow as healthy, friendly and highly respected scientific event in the world.
Congratulations to the organizers who have worked hard to prepare the event since last year.
It will be a great international scientific event with the participation of more than 40
countries. Many highly respected Indian astronomers and physicists will and have contributed
in this event. The best students from all over the world will work on the best quality tasks
made by the best Indian astronomers, making high quality scientific output a certainty.
We thank NISER, the host institute of the 10th IOAA, and thank the Government of India for
making the IOAA in India a reality. We hope the students compete with high spirit to show
their best performance and the team leaders and juries work as precisely as possible to yield
the fairest judgement in a friendly atmosphere.

WELCOME MESSAGE

Dear participants,
I extend a warm welcome to all of you to the National Institute of Science
Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, for the
10th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics. These Olympiads
conducted in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy and
Astrophysics, Junior Science, Informatics and Earth Science are aimed to
stimulate young minds of all countries. In addition to academic competition such
events also go a long way in fostering friendship between students/teachers
belonging to different countries besides allowing a rich cultural exchange. I
understand that the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics is
being held for the first time in India. NISER is very happy and proud to host this
event. A few words about us. NISER is a newly established institute of higher
learning. We have undergraduate and graduate programmes in Chemistry,
Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Earth and Planetary
Sciences. We have state-of-the art teaching and research laboratories. We carry
out research in all the frontier areas of science and tackle fundamental
problems. Our undergraduate and graduate programmes attract the best talent
from the country. We hope that you will have time to explore our campus, visit
our research laboratories and interact with our students, staff and faculty.
Odisha, the state where we are located offers one of the richest cultural
experiences in India being famous for its music, dance, sculpture (in stone and
sand) and handicrafts. We hope that you will have an opportunity to visit some
of the nearby beaches and temples and get a feel of the rich heritage of India.
Once again I warmly welcome all the participants to NISER and I hope that you
enjoy your stay here during the 10th International Olympiad on Astronomy and
Astrophysics.
