Through this course students should be able to

To trace the process of emigration, settlement and identity formation of Indian Diaspora
in host societies

To highlight the bilateral relations of India with the other countries

To highlight the contribution of the Indian diaspora to the scientific, technological,


administrative and industrial development in host societies

Unit I
Diaspora : The concept, origin, evolution, contemporary usage, Diasporic identities
and nature
Unit II
Stages of migration : Classical, early Indian migration:Ceylon and South East Asia,
Colonial migration, Fiji, Mauritius, USA and other developed countries in 19th and
20th centuries
Unit III
Categories of Indian diaspora : People of Indian origin and Non Resident Indians,
Regional, linguistic, religious, caste divisions, First generation and second generation
divide
Unit IV
Indian diaspora in host society : Western countries USA, UK, Canada, Caribbean
(Trinidad, Guyana, Surinam), Indian ocean states (Sri Lanka, Mauritius), South East
Asia, Fiji, West Asia
Unit V
Indian diaspora and homeland : Cultural, intellectual, religious, economic and
political connections, influence on domestic politics and foreign policy
Unit VI
India in the Diasporic age : India's policy towards her diaspora, economic,
Scientific, Technological, cultural and political collaboration and adjustments
