CONSULTING SERVICES
DEPARTMENT
ALERT NO : 19
ISSUE DATE: 3/25/95
SUBJECT: EXIDE DYNACELL SEALED BATTERIES ELECTROLYTE LEAKAGE
PROBLEMS
SUMMARY
Repetitive reoccurrence of ground faults has been detected with Exide Dynacell sealed batteries that
are less than 2 years old. These ground faults are caused by electrolyte leakage, from defective cells,
which forms a conductive path from the cell terminals to the cell retaining frame. The existence of a
ground fault places the UPS and DC systems at great risk. Users of the subject batteries should
perform quarterly ground detection checks to verify system integrity at all installations.
BACKGROUND
CSD recently investigated the causes of ground faults in UPS systems in the Tower Building and the
Expec Computer Center. These UPS systems are equipped with Exide Dynacell sealed batteries that
are less than 2 years old. Field investigations have confirmed three problem areas with the batteries -leakage from defective cover-to-jar joints, faulty pressure relief valves, and leakage around defective
post-to-cover seals. Exide has acknowledged that these problems are caused by some of their
manufacturing processes. They have stated that there is a high probability of these defects in the
batteries manufactured between the 3rd quarter of 1991 and the 3rd quarter of 1992. Exide has agreed
to repair or replace the defective batteries as necessary.
RECOMMENDATIONS
CSD recommends that all users perform ground detection checks on all sealed battery installations.
The ground detection check should be part of the regular quarterly maintenance program. The DC
voltages from positive to ground and from negative to ground should be equal. An unbalanced voltage
would indicate the existence of a ground fault.
Please report all battery grounding problems, loss of capacity, and premature failures to M.T. Ansari
on 874-0083 (Fax: 873-0766). CSD will coordinate with the manufacturer to ensure that the required
corrective actions are taken immediately.
