ANNEXURE III
PROCESS DESCRIPTION
NaOCl Dosing System:
The raw water is chlorinated for Disinfection.
Pressure Sand Filter: [PSF]
The unit consists of MSRL pressure vessel. The filter consists of fine sand, supported by gravels &
pebbles. This allows the filter to work using surface filtration.
It is externally fitted with necessary pipe work, valves, pressure gauges, and sampling points at
the inlet and outlet.
The water flows downwards through the filter bed and the suspended matter is retained on the
sand surface. The filtered water is evenly collected by bottom collecting system respectively.
The inlet water distributor consists of a header strainer system.
Backwash:
Water is passed upwards through the column from bottom to top and then discharged to the drain
for 10 minutes or till the effluent is clear, at required flow rate. This results in removal of free
impurities from the sand bed.
Rinse:
Water is passed downwards through the column. The water flows out through the bottom collector
and flows to drain. The required flow rate is maintained by use of Rota meter till the effluent is
clear for approx. 5 minutes.
Activated Carbon Filter [ACF]:
The unit consists essentially of a MSRL pressure vessel. Selected activated carbon is supported by
gravels & pebbles. This filter will remove any organics, color, odour from raw water.
It is externally fitted with necessary pipe work, valve, pressure gauges, sampling points at the inlet and
outlet. Filtered water from PSF flows downwards through the filter bed and the suspended matter is
retained on the sand surface and between the sand grains immediately below the surface.

Backwash:
Water is passed upwards through the column from bottom to top and then discharged to the drain
for 10 minutes or till the water is clear, at required flow rate. This results in removal of free
impurities from the sand bed.
Rinse:
Water is passed downwards through the column. The water flows out through the bottom collector
and flows to drain. The required flow rate is maintained by use of Rota meter till the water is clear
for approx. 5 minutes.

Iron Removal Filter [IRF]:

The unit consists essentially of MSRL pressure vessel. MnO2 media is supported by gravels & pebbles. It
is externally fitted with necessary pipe work, valves, pressure gauges, sampling points at the inlet and
outlet. The water flows downwards through the filter bed and the suspended matter is retained on the
sand surface and between the sand grains immediately below the surface.
5 minutes.
Calcite Filter [CF]:
Calcite is a naturally occurring calcium carbonate media. One of the advantages of Calcite is its
self-limiting property. When properly applied, it corrects pH only enough to reach a non-corrosive
equilibrium. It does not overcorrect under normal conditions. Upon contact with calcite, acidic
waters slowly dissolve the calcium carbonate to raise the pH which reduces potential leaching of
copper, lead and other metals found in typical plumbing systems. Periodic backwashing will prevent
packing, reclassify the bed and maintain high service rates. Depending on pH, water chemistry and
service flow, the Calcite bed will have to be periodically replenished as the Calcite is depleted.
Advantages of Calcite Filters:---Naturally occurring, inexpensive material
Low uniformity coefficient for maximum contact
Slower Reacting for controlled pH correction
5 minutes.
Softener Stream:
Softener [SF]:
Treated Water from Treated Water Tank is fed to the softener. Softening is carried out by the ion
exchange process. The description and chemical reaction is as given below:
Ion Exchange resins are porous materials, which contain an inert base attached to
which, are free ions. These ions are Free to move about within the resin structure and
can be replaced by other ions of the same type from a surrounding solution. The resin for

the softener is the sodium based resin which exchanges the hardness. The typical
reactions are given below in the process.
Service
During the service the ion exchange resin works with the following reaction.

Regeneration
When the supply of the exchangeable ions within the resin is exhausted, the treated water from the
resin deteriorates and the resin requires regeneration-reconversion of the resin into the operating
form.
For Cation exchange softener application resins brine is used for regeneration.

Equipment Details
This is MSRL pressure vessel, designed on co-flow regeneration mode. Externally, the unit is
provided with frontal piping with necessary valves, pressure gauge and sample valve at the inlet
and outlet brine measuring tank and ejector for the injection of brine solution in the tank.
Internally the unit is provided with inlet distributor, regenerant distributor, middle collector and
bottom collection system for collecting water during service and distribute during backwash
operation.
The unit is regenerated when the unit has delivered its specified output or when the treated water
quality is not satisfactory whichever is earlier.
Major regeneration steps:
Backwash:
During backwash water is passed upwards from the bottom and taken out from the top and drained
to the drain sump.

Injection:
During this stage the brine will be injected in the system with the help of ejector provided on at the
outlet of brine measuring tank.
Rinse:
After the injection the unit is rinsed for the specified time. This step is carried out to utilize the brine
injected in the softener.
UV Stream
Micron Cartridge Filter:
Treated Water from Treated Water Tank is fed to Micron Filter through Hydropneumatic Pump. It is of
10 micron rating given to reduce the suspended impurities upto 10 micron. The filtered water from
Micron Cartridge Filter shall be pumped to the 1 micron catridge filter.
Micron Cartridge Filter:
It is of 1 micron rating given to reduce the suspended impurities upto 1 micron. The filtered water from
Micron Cartridge Filter shall be pumped to UV for disinfection.
Ultraviolet [UV]:
UV rays are passed in order to kill microorganisms and disinfection. It does not alter water chemically;
nothing is being added except energy. The sterilized microorganisms are not removed from the water.
UV disinfection does not remove dissolved organics, inorganics or particles in the water.
