SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF STEEL BUILDING BY SOFTWARE APPROACH

abstract
As compare to the Reinforced cement concrete (RCC) the steel has got some important
physical properties like the high strength per unit weight and ductility. The high yield and
ultimate strength result in slender sections. Being ductile the steel structures give sufficient
advance warning before failure by way of excessive deformations. These properties of steel
are of very much vital in case of the seismic resistant design.
To analysis the response of steel building subjected to seismic loading using STAAD and to
identify the resisting stresses generated to resist the seismic loads efficiently and also to track
the responses of steel structure subjected to horizontal seismic loading and study the
parameters bending moment, shear force, story drift and axial force. This synopsis describes
the analysis of high-rise steel building frame. In this work equivalent static analysis is carried
out for steel building with steel moment resisting building frame having (G+9) storey situated
in zone III. Modelling and analysis will be perform using software STAAD Pro V8i. The steel
moment resisting building frame is analyze by without steel bracing system. The analysis of
steel bracing and the building are carried out using Software. The main parameters to
consider in this project are to compare the seismic performance of buildings in terms of
bending moment, shear force, story drift and axial force. The models are analyze by
equivalent static analysis as per IS 1893:2002. Finally comparison for the steel building with
normal loading and steel building with combination of normal and seismic loading based on
parameters like bending moment, shear force, story drift and axial force etc.
Aim : To study the seismic response of steel building by Software approach
Objectives :
1. To compare response of steel building subjected to lateral loads with steel building
subjected to normal loading.
2. To study the parameters bending moment, shear force, story drift and axial force when
seismic loading is applied.
3. To study the process of modeling and analyses of building structure subjected to
seismic loading using STAAD Pro V8i software.

Introduction
Earthquakes are one of the great damaging natural hazards. In the last three decades, the
study of the variation effect on the seismic response of civil structures has been advanced
significantly. For example, several response spectrum method have been developed by
different researchers to calculate the seismic response of structures to multi-support
excitations. Earthquake happens due to transient motion of the ground which results into
release of elastic energy in a matter of few seconds. An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip
on a fault. The tectonic plates are always slowly moving, but they get stuck at their edges due
to friction. When the stress on the edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that
releases energy in the form of waves that travel through the earth's crust and cause the
shaking of the ground. The impact of the event is most traumatic because it affects large area,
occurs suddenly and is unpredictable. They can cause large scale loss of life and property and
disrupts essential services such as Water Supply, Sewerage systems, Communication and
power, Transport etc. They not only destroy villages, towns and cities but the aftermath leads
to destabilization of the economic and social structure of the nation.
In this project analysis of steel building subjected to seismic loading using STAAD software
will be performed. Also comparison will be done between building which subjected to
horizontal or lateral loading system and building which subjected to normal loading.

This document aims to present in a straightforward manner the essentials of seismic analysis
and design of steel structures, which is a field of engineering and construction to which
ArcelorMittal contributes by continuous research efforts that bring better steel products and
original analysis and design solutions to the market.
2. Seismic Response Of Steel Building With Linear Bracing System by Manish S. Takey
Prof. S.S.Vidhale
In this literature comparison of response of braced and unbraced steel building subjected to
lateral loads is done. The analysis is performed using SAP2000 in which the response of
unsymmetrical building with braces subjected to seismic loading is shown.

The aim was to identify the suitable bracing systems for resisting the seismic loads efficiently
in steel building. The paper concludes that X bracing system performs better in seismic
condition.

In all 24 Tips has been released and is targeted at persons interested in building construction.
The Tips cover topics such as basic introduction to earthquakes and terminology such as
magnitude and intensity, concepts of earthquake resistant design, and aspects of a seismic
design and construction of buildings. Utmost care is taken to ensure that despite complexity
of the concepts, the Tips are simple and unambiguous. To ensure the highest quality of
technical contents, every Tip is carefully reviewed by two or more experts, both within and
outside India and their feedback is used before finalizing the Tips.
