Field Introduction
1.1
Missan oilfield group is located in the Missan province in southeastern of Iraq and near the Iranian
border. It is about 175km south to Basra and about 350km northwest to Baghdad, (Figure 1-1). The
weather is hot and dry, with average temperature of 34 in July, the average temperature of 11 in
January, average annual rainfall of 165mm. Most of this area is desert and gobi, relatively flat, but
some hills in the north of Abu Ghirab.
Missan oilfield group consists of three producing oilfields, Abu Ghirab, Buzurgan and Fauqi oilfields,
of which Abu Ghirab and Fauqi oilfields across the border between Iraq and Iran. Abu Ghirab oilfield
contract area is 30km 6km, Buzurgan oilfield contract area is 40km 7km, and Fauqi oilfield
contract area is 23km 6km (Figure 1-2).

The formations penetrated from top to bottom in Mesopotamia region, where Missan oilfield group is
located, are respectively Tertiary Upper Fars, mainly consists of the sandstone and mudstone with
thickness of 2000m and more; Lower Fars, mainly consists of anhydrite and salt deposition with
thickness of about 800m, being the regional seal; Tertiary Jeribe to Cretaceous Nahr Umer, mainly
consists of carbonate with thickness of about 800m, with the late Cretaceous drilled through (Figure
1-3).
There are 4 sets of reservoirs developed in the oilfields: Tertiary Asmari, the lithology is limestone
and dolomite mainly and sandstone reservoir developed in some areas; Middle Cretaceous Mishrif
and Mauddud, lithology is the limestone mainly; Middle Cretaceous Nahr Umr, lithology is clastic
rocks mainly.
Fauqi oilfield has two sets of reservoir, Tertiary Asmari and Cretaceous Mishrif. 3 pay zones are
divided in the Asmari reservoir which is A, B and C. The main pay zone is B and A.
The pay zone A of Asmari consists mainly of dolomite. The pay zone B is dolomite intercalated with
sandstone, limestone and thin shale. The pay zone C is mainly the sandstone, intercalated with a few
dolomite, mudstone and limestone.
The main reservoir in Fauqi oilfield is cretaceous Mishrif. Seven pay zones can be divided in the
Mishrif reservoir which is MA, MB11, MB12, MB21, MB22, MC1 and MC2.
MA consists of mainly compact limestone while some packstone reservoir is developed in the south
dome area; MB11 mainly consists of mudstone interbeded with thin wackstone reservoir particularly
in the south dome; MB12 consists of mudstone; MB21 is mainly composed of grainstone, packstone
reservoir; MB22 consists of mainly compact mudstone; MC1 is mainly composed of packstone
reservoir in the upper part and lower part composed of compact mudstone; MC2 consists of mainly
packstone reservoir.

1) Formation temperature
The Asmari reservoir in Abu Ghirab oilfield has the geothermal gradient of 2.3 /100m.
The Asmari reservoir in Fauqi oilfield has the geothermal gradient of 2.3 /100m.
The Mishrif reservoir in Buzurgan oilfield has the geothermal gradient of 2.4 /100m.
2) Formation pressure
Asmari reservoir in Abu Ghirab oilfield, the initial formation pressure for is 4630psi which is
equivalent to pressure co-efficient of 1.14; the reservoir pressure drop due to the production and
currently the pressure co-efficient is about 0.99-1.07.
Asmari reservoir in Fauqi oilfield, the initial formation pressure for is 4930psi which is equivalent to
pressure co-efficient of 1.14; the reservoir pressure drop due to the production and currently the
pressure co-efficient is about 0.97-1.09.
Mishrif reservoir in Buzurgan oilfield, the initial formation pressure for is 6300psi which is equivalent
to pressure co-efficient of 1.15; the reservoir pressure drop due to the production and currently the
pressure co-efficient is about 0.78-0.96 for MB21 in the south and about 0.92-1.01 for MB21 and
about 0.88-0.97 for MC1 in the north.
Asmari reservoir gas composition: CO2 content of 0.1-1.52%; H2S content of 0-0.4%.
Mishrif reservoir gas composition: CO2 content of 3.4-7.2%; H2S content of 0.6-2.5%.
It is necessary to guard against the risks of H2S and CO2.
Based on the Missan Oilfield development plan, Company plans to drill twelve (12) vertical wells, by
three rigs in Abu Ghirab, Fauqi, and Buzurgan oilfield.
The construction specifications of the well-sites for the twelve (12) wells could be found in following
attachment.

The high pressure layer exists in Lower Fars above Asmari reservoir. In addition, there are micro
fractures in reservoir.
Risk of Mud loss in MB1 in 12-1/4 hole.
During the drilling process, pay close attention to formation pressure changes, and adjust the mud
weight to prevent downhole accidents.
Gas formation may show in AALIJI, KHASIB and SADI formation.
Mishrif reservoir gas composition: CO2 content of 3.4-7.2%; H2S content of 0.6-2.5%. It is
necessary to guard against the risks of H2S and CO2. Bit balling may be occurred in 17-1/2 hole
section, sometimes POOH with back-reaming.
Mud loss and borehole collapse occurred in 8-1/4 hole section frequently during drilling and
cementing operation, high risk for running 6-5/8 liner, setting liner hanger and cementing.
