BI Publisher Charts Reporting Tool

Chapter 1 White Paper Introduction

This White Paper is a practical guide for technical users and developers who implement, maintain,
or develop applications for PeopleSoft system. In this White Paper, we discuss on designing custom
Charts within BI Publisher Tool.
Much of the information contained in this document was created by Oracle BI Publisher
Development, but as significant issues are encountered and documented, this White Paper will be
updated to include them.
Also, in this White Paper we intend to guide the developers through the BI Publisher Tool of
developing own reports including Charts and to guide the business analysts to work with BI
Publisher Charts. Simple cases of creating different BI Publisher charts will be provided just to give
an exposure to all of the pieces that are involved in developing charts for BI publisher. The hope is
that once it was gain a bit of experience in all of the pieces, the developers can then refer to other
documentation to build the robust solution that is intended to deliver. There are several ways to do a
single task- all with their pros and cons. In this white paper it was tried to touch on the known
methods; it is up to the business analysts to decide which is best for the business requirements.
This document was written for 8.53 PeopleTools release and can be used for this release and all
later releases. Previous PeopleTools information is for historical information only.

STRUCTURE OF THIS WHITE PAPER

Oracle will update this document as needed so that it reflects the most current feedback that is

Chapter 2 Overview of BI Publisher Charts

BI PUBLISHER CHARTS OVERVIEW
What is a Chart?
Chart is one of the best and most effective tools to extract the meaning of the data and provide to
the audience a great insight about the data.
BI Publisher functionality supports about 70 distinct chart types and then variations on top of those;
BI Publisher uses Oracle's BI Beans technology to render the charts. BI Publisher calls the BI Beans
library using their XML APIs passing an XML chart definition and getting back either an image or
an SVG rendition of the chart for inclusion into the final output document. However, the Chart
Wizard in the Word Template Builder only supports 3 of them, well, 4 if the Horizontal and
Vertical bars are counted as two.

Is the Adobe SVG Viewer Technology required to be used within BI Publisher,

functionality when designing charts?
Since moving to version 10.1.3.4.1 of the BI Publisher Core engine starting on PeopleTools 8.49.22
and 8.50, the SVG Viewer plugin for Internet Explorer is not necessary. In version 10.1.3.4.1 of the
engine, PNG format is used for the chart images and not SVG.
This functionality continues with the 11g Core engine, which is supported on PeopleTools 8.53.
1) The latest versions of all major browsers, Chrome/FireFox/Safari, provide native support for
SVG. For IE, this would be version 9 in "Standard" mode.
2) The PeopleSoft Charting component handles SVG type images by dynamically switching
between PNG format and SVG based on detected browser type and version.
From a Charting perspective:
Both PNG and SVG formats are used for displaying PeopleSoft charts.

Chart Layout
The layout editor supports a variety of chart types and styles to graphically present data in the
layout. Figure 2-1 shows side-by-side vertical bar and pie charts in the layout editor.

Once inserted, the chart properties can be edited using the dynamic toolbars or the Properties pane.
The Properties pane extends the options from the Chart tab and enables to enter very specific
custom settings for the following:

Chart Effect
Chart Legend
Chart Plot Area
Chart Title
Chart Label

Note:
The following Chart Label properties apply to Scatter and Bubble chart types only: Title Font, Title
Horizontal Align, Title Text, and Title Visible.

Chart Values

Note:
Some font effects such as underline, italic, and bold might not render in PDF output.

Chapter 3 Requierments for generating BI Publisher Charts

BI PUBLISHER DESKTOP TOOLS DOWNLOADS
BI Publisher Desktop Tools
BI Publisher provides a set of desktop tools to facilitate the design of layouts in Microsoft. Install
these tools when planning to create BI Publisher rich text format (RTF) layouts.
The Template Builder for Microsoft Word is an add-in that enables to insert report components
(such as tables, charts, and repeating groups) to the Word document and to map elements from the
data used to these report components.
The desktop tools also include the Template Viewer that enables the preview of RTF, PDF, Excel,
and XSL template types.

Download the BI Publisher Desktop Plugin

Download the desktop version that is appropriate for the PeopleToos version used:

PeopleTools incorporates the correct version of the BI Publisher Desktop Plugin within the
PeopleTools application

Access the Design Helper page (Navigate to Reporting Tools > BI Publisher > Setup > Design
Helper)

During template creation, a design helper facilitates the insertion of application data tag
placeholders into the created templates. A schema or sample data file is required for using a design
helper. If a sample data file is used, the template may be previewed offline during the design
process.
Two template design helpers are available: one for designing RTF reports (MS Word Template
Builder) and one for the PDF template that gets embedded as a JavaScript inside the PDF template
itself when the template is uploaded to PeopleTools.
This page enables users to download a plug-in for Microsoft Word to facilitate offline RTF template
design. Two versions of the plug-in are available: one for 32bit Word and another for 64bit
Word. Select a version that applies from the list to enable the download button.
The plug-in is downloaded as a zip file. Based on the selection done, the zip file contains either
BIPublisherDesktop32.exe or BIPublisherDesktop64.exe that should be run to install the plug-in.
Included in the BI Publisher desktop plug-in setup, multiple directories are created that contain
documentation, samples, tutorial, and demos. The program is also added to the Start menu.

An alternate BI Publisher download page is:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-publisher/downloads/index.html

The BI Publisher desktop version related to the PeopleToos version used may be checked as
follows:

Select Reporting Tools > BI Publisher > Translations;

Search by a delivered BI Publisher report (e.g. XRFWIN);
Click on the "Generate Translatable File" button;
Check the extractorVersion;
For example, for PeopleTools version 8.53.07 the BI Publisher version is 11.1.1.6.10_1.2;
This is the line displayed in the translatable file:
<prop prop-type="extractorVersion">11.1.1.6.10_1.2</prop>.
Please see the Certification Information link on the Downloads page for supported platforms:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-publisher/downloads/index.html
Open the spreadsheet and go to the 3rd Party Client Tab, where the notes outlines the supported MS
Word releases.
Go to the Client System Tab, where is documentation regarding the supported workstation OS and
bit-levels.

Use Oracle BI Publisher Template Builder to:

Create the RTF document

Upload the sample file
Insert the table and the Chart

The RTF document can be created in Microsoft Word and saved as an RFT file. You will use the
Template Builder option to Load XML Sample Data to associate a sample data file with this
template.
The sample data file provides the tags necessary to map fields into the document.
For PS Query data sources, the sample data file needs to be downloaded to a file that may be
accessed from Microsoft Word.
Note: The Template Builder is used with the Oracle BI Publisher stand-alone product; therefore
many of the menu options are not used with the PeopleSoft integration.

How to create the RTF template with table and charts from scratch?
According to the report design requirements the RTF template may be created by inserting the table
and charts (Insert > Table Wizard, Insert > Chart menu options from the BI Publisher toolbar) or
using the Table and Chart Wizards provided in MS Word for BI Publisher.

APPENDIX A Testing Considerations

UNIT TESTS
Debugging charts
Use Oracles Template Viewer. BI Publisher provides client side tools to aid in the building and
testing of layout templates. This consists of a plugin to MS Word for the building of RTF templates
and the Template Viewer, this helps you to test and debug all BI Publisher template types.
The client tool can be found in the BI Publisher folder in your Program Files (e.g. C:\Program Files
(x86)\Oracle\BI Publisher\BI Publisher Desktop\TemplateViewer)
When running the template viewer make sure to change the log (debug) level on the Settings Tab
to STATEMENT before running the template.
A good aspect is that the template viewer is capable of running in any environment that has the jre
installed.
