FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Change is inevitable; it is the only thing that is permanent. As we are moving on to
the next quarter, it brings along a number of new things along with it, new
milestones, achievements, events and experiences. But before that let us take a
moment to glance back into the past, which is the purpose of our quarterly
newsletter. It not only highlights the events that took place but also serves as a
platform for fellow toastmasters to hone their writing skills, share their views and
gain perspective.
The current term is going to an end this December. As the time to step down from
Vice President Public Relations approaches, I feel quite nostalgic. It reminds me of
the challenges faced and the sense of achievement we, PR team, used to get while
overcoming them. I admire the posters created for the events and weekly meetings
till date and will cherish them always. It has been quite a learning experience and a
rewarding journey. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment working with my PR team. I
would like to thank the entire team to make the term successful for PR.
To get a glimpse of the leadership teams and the toastmasters of SBTC journey, we
bring to you the newsletter. We even received a number of interesting artifacts this
quarter, with the members showcasing their talents at their best, which I am sure
you will thoroughly enjoy reading.

FROM THE PRESIDENTS DESK

Leadership is not about leading from the front; it is about being at the background
of all and being the backbone of the team. It is rightly said that challenges and
tough situations shape a persons life. And for a leader the hardships come with a
magnifier. The Murphys Law can be most associated with a leaders journey.
Anything and everything can go wrong starting from degraded motivation in the
team, to conflicts amongst members, to miscommunication leading to
misunderstanding. At a certain point it might even feel, what is the worth of all the
effort being put in?
The journey of leadership started long back for me with the role of House leader in
fourth grade. However, the last five months have been the pinnacle of this journey,
serving the role of president of Siemens Bangalore Toastmasters Club. For the last 3
terms the club has excelled in many aspects ranging from achievements to
recognitions and the bar was set at the highest. With the heritage, term started with
many expectations not only from its members at the club level but also from the
area, district and division. And when the expectations are high the margin of error
would almost be zilch with performance required to be at the peak. The mixed
feelings had created a sense of determination and perseverance to continue the
good work and take the club to the next level. The onset was impeccable with a
splendid installation ceremony hosting a scintillating tall tales contest. The members
were energetic and engaging throughout the term participating in events and
contests within and outside the club.
The Vice President Education, Toastmaster Gopal, and Toastmaster Aruna, were
active throughout the term and were instrumental in organizing many important
sessions. Speech marathon was one such example that created a sense of healthy
competition. The educational sessions by various experienced toastmasters and
orators proved to be guiding path for members. The topics varied from handling
table topics to becoming a fearless speaker by killing stress. The joint meeting
also served as a bridging gap between the outside and inside world of toastmasters.
The membership team Toastmaster Aastha and Toastmaster Fany, excelled in its
duties of following up with guests and old members for renewals, the result was
evident from the 6 new and reinstated members who joined the club.
The public relationship team, Toastmaster Soumya and Toastmaster Resmi, was
proactive and highly motivated to brand the club within and outside the
organization. Posters for regular meetings, updates on social media (WhatsApp and
Facebook) were aptly managed. However, stand out point was PR Campaign
organized in the office, which witnessed a massive turnout. More than 300 people
were attracted to participate in the event and thereby increases the awareness
about toastmasters in the organization.

The Secretaries, SAAs and Treasures did a fabulous job in their respective offices.
Sending timely and creative minutes of the meeting, maintaining the club roaster;
Toastmaster Bharathi was splendid in her job. Toastmaster Harish maintained the
club finances transparently and accurately and looked after all the financial
aspects. Toastmaster Jithendrian and Toastmaster Gayatri were energetic in
opening the meetings on a high note and were administrative in handling club
resources.
The members also showed their oratory and critical skills by winning medals at
area level humorous speech and evaluation contest. Toastmaster Mithun and
Toastmaster Resmi have completed their Competent Communicator journey. The
leadership skills of the club were displayed at the Area level semi-annual
conference that was hosted by Siemens toastmasters, it was a huge success.
Toastmaster Fany completed her Competent Leadership track and Toastmaster
Srividya took a step forward and achieved her Advanced Leadership Bronze award.
A new reward system #BestMasterOfTheMonth was introduced to encourage and
motivate members to be regular and active in the club meetings.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the office bearers for their
constant support and sincere dedication. I would also like to express my gratitude
for all the members. Its because of their unconditional support, time and effort
that the club stands in a strong position at present and is blossoming in more than
one way.

Installation Ceremony

A new day, a new term, a new inception! On a bright Wednesday afternoon,

bringing fresh energy into the 30th week of the year, a batch of bright, blooming,
boisterous officers was installed as office bearers in the Siemens Bangalore
Toastmasters club.
The event also witnessed an exciting tall tales contest. At around 1:45 pm, the
auditorium was full of august men and women, elegantly dressed to suit the
occasion. The legend of SBTC, well known to the members of toastmasters club in
and around, and it automatically magnetized many young and dynamic fellow
toastmasters. The meeting started punctually at 2:00 PM, when TM Jithendrian,
the SAA, kicked off the meeting by welcoming the chief dignitaries, guests and
fellow toastmasters.
The meeting took a fine course as it was very graciously handled till the end by
two of the finest TMs of SBTC who were the MCs TM Bharathi and TM Balaji.
Mr. Pradeep R, head HR of Siemens Technology and Services Private Ltd., was one
of the invited dignitaries who shared his experiences of life on how
communication and leadership were essential qualities for progression in
life/career and toastmasters was an intuitive platform for each of us to become
better.

Sow the seeds of hard work, determination and endurance and reap the
rewards of achievements, success and self-fulfillment Rashida Row. The
toastmasters who had exemplary performance in various categories like Best
Prepared Speaker (TM Aastha), Table Topics Speaker(TM Prashanth), Best Role
Taker(TM Vishal) and Best Evaluator (TM Balaji) were recognized and honored by
Mr. Pradeep R.
SBTC not only honors individual category winners but also equally recognizes
people who have demonstrated striking performance throughout the term by
giving away prizes in the category Toast Master of the Term(TM Fany) and best
Newcomer(TM Gayatri). Such is the motivation and recognition this club
provides, to catalyze each of its members to surpass their own thresholds.
The award distribution was then followed by the nostalgic experiences shared
by past associate president Rajat on how his toastmasters journey has bolstered
him from being a timid boy to a confident speaker and to being a host in different
shows. With dedication and perseverance from individuals, the magic
Toastmasters weaves, as a platform, will leave Hogwarts as a dummy.
The installation then began with installing Officer Rohit Sharma, Area Director
(I3), talking on maturity with which the club has evolved since its inception and
produced fine leaders due to the zest and zeal each of the members has always
demonstrated. He then called for an ovation for all the past officers for all the
commendable work the team had displayed and relieved them of their duties.
The new officers where then installed with their roles and responsibilities read
out aloud.
As I pledged, a club officer myself, I could feel the adrenaline rush in my body
thinking of all the responsibilities I now shouldered. It was nothing less than
being given the charge to run the state. I am sure many of my fellow officers
would agree with my emotions and felt the same.
Truly strapping up to the words of Andrew Carneige No man will make a great
leader who wants to do it all or get all the credit for doing it, the incoming
president TM Prashanth acknowledged each of the remarkable feats the club and
its members had achieved and inspired the members to achieve greater heights
working together.
Life is too short to be serious all the time and so is a ceremony. The tall tales
contest saw eight competent contestants spin splendid utopian tales by giving
each other a run for the prize leaving the spellbound audiences glued to their
seats. The first prize was bagged by TM Vikas Sangam from Deejays club, 1st
runner up TM Srinidhi from E.C club and 2nd runner up TM Sesha from E.C club.

The audience was enlightened by words of wisdom provided by our chief guest
Mr. Sanjay Chaudhary (head, Energy Management, STSPL) that how lucky we all
are to have a platform like TM to fast track our careers by building up the right
skills like communication and leadership.
Memories are always sweeter when you leave the place with a full stomach.
The ceremony then came to an end with vote of thanks followed by high-tea
and lots of socializing among the members of various clubs.

FUN FIESTA BATTLEGROUND (PR CAMPAIGN)

The Beginning
The day had finally arrived, when the shining armors of Siemens Bangalore
Toastmasters club warriors came to the fore light. It was the day for enticing the
employees to become future toastmasters for the ever shining and everlasting
journey of toastmasters.
The stage was set at Siemens main building cafeteria. All the warriors were
equipped with their weapons, TM Banner as their shield, a blackboard as their
armor, pen as their arrows and attendance sheets as count of victory. The
enthusiastic toastmasters had prepped the cafeteria as their hunting ground.
Lets introduce the warriors as they enter the arena.

SIEMENS BANGALORE TOASTMASTERS CLUB

Volume 4, Issue I

31.12.2016

Warrior Nikhil was the Zeus, leading the battle of alluring audience then Female
warrior Resmi as the Athena supporting Nikhil with his camaraderie. Warrior
Prashant as the Drona was overlooking the entire scene with Hawkeye, and
warrior Nitin helping him with the registers and supporting him. In the left we had
the dynamic and deadly duo, Warrior Fany and Warrior Vishal as they make the
remaining ground. In between, various other warriors made their appearance as
time went by. They would appear as the battle gets intensified. The hunt for the
future tm or should I say future warrior of public speaking and leaders had begun.
We invited the employees to play a game, creating a Chakravyuha. The game was
to guess a word by drawing the word on white board and if they win they are
given jewels of battlefield i.e., chocolates. Sound simple, right? Hold on your
breath, dear readers. The real fun would just begin. Those who had guessed it
right would be asked to showcase their talents of sword fencing of words in front
of all warriors and viewers for 30 sec.
Now, as time progressed we got an encouraging bunch of brave hearts trying their
luck. Many failed, many won, even many surpassed their own expectation and
thus the main aim of this battle was fruit filling. We gauged our brave heart by
calling them to come and showcase their skill. We encouraged them with our
heart piercing words to come and enjoy, because even in a battlefield, even if it is
all stressed, the warriors relax themselves by showing their skill. And boy, we did
that. With warrior Nikhil possessed as Zeus, keep throwing his thunderbolt of Are
u interested to play a game? and warrior Resmi with her smile and fearless
nature kept calling the hungry soul who just wanted to eat their food with great
tempos and energy.
Warrior Fany as always with her dynamic and deadly charm and wit kept the
audience engaged; Warrior Vishal with his aggressive yet subtle tone called and
encouraged the future toastmasters.
As soon as the crowd became berserk, a thunderous female warrior made the
entry and with her everlasting energy made her presence felt. Warrior Gayatri has
arrived. She gazed at the audience and with her gizmo energy handled the crowd
with aplomb. There were guest appearances of the ageless warrior tm Aruna, the
smiling warrior tm Meenakshi, the witty warrior TM Shiva who encouraged us and
helped us by bringing in their team members to participate.
In all the frenzy and chaos, I can see the energy never dying. All the warriors were
as If really possessed by all Toastmasters spirit that everybody even forgot the
lunch. We wrapped the battle with a will to never die as picture abhi baki hai
mere dost.

The Conclusion
Another day, another place but the settings had changed. We were now at Siemens
Salarpuria building with same old warriors along with other new warriors entering
the scene. We had the ever talented warrior TM Aastha who is a powerhouse in
herself, leading HSR tm club and being an area director of I2. There was also a
friendly appearance of Warrior TM Soumya who managed to bring all her team mates
to participate with the same prep we started the Chakravyuha again. But this time,
the crowd surpassed our own expectation. It was as if we are being overthrown in a
sea with ships around us. But as warriors of Siemens TM club, we never backed and
started the game. So there we were with people indulged in playing the game,
guessing and speaking with more enthusiasm than most of the warriors. And still we
were encouraging, enticing and exciting not only the audience but even among us.
With people jumping on us as kangaroo jump on land, I could see in the eyes of our
warriors how passionate they are with their jobs. Explaining the same stuff over and
over can bring anyone energy down but not us. We were working as a group who
wanted to shine the name of TM and what it meant to us.
With all this happening, the rush was something to see. Instead of us calling they
were more excited to know more about TM than we asking them. So it was a double
bonanza with the party just starting. The game was played so much that all the jewel
of battles were lost, i.e., all chocolates got over and people still wanted to come and
listen to us. The spirit of the employees lifted us and made it a memorable event.
With all said and done our warriors now conquered the battlefield with more than
300 future warriors that may join us for the next battle of finding their next
generation.
As witnessed and seen,
This is me signing off,
Warrior Toastmaster Vishal Shaw

AREA LEVEL ANNUAL CONFERENCE

I was the first person to reach the hall, as I was waiting simultaneously my mind
was preparing for my conference chair talk. I saw two young men walking inside
the auditorium of Siemens, where the Annual conference of Area I3 was held. It
was a fine morning, all the members of I3 gathered in Siemens Bangalore
Toastmasters Club to take part in Annual conference of Area I3. Clubs such as
Siemens Bangalore Toastmasters, Bosch Toastmasters, Alliance Toastmasters, CGI
Toastmasters and Speakers Den Toastmasters constitutes the area.
I was eagerly waiting for the conference to begin, as it had 3 interesting contests
and two thought provoking educational sessions. One session was conducted by an
ardent leader and dedicated toastmaster Rajkumar Bansal, who was also the chief
judge for the contests; another was delivered by Winner of Semi-Finals at
International Speech Contest, Deepak Justin.

their speeches. Banti Banerjee from Speakers Den bagged first place in the

place.
Then there was Evaluation contest headed by toastmaster Mithun of Siemens
Bangalore toastmasters club. We had a demo speech by one of the toastmasters

Chetana Patricia Lobo was the conference chair who meticulously planned the
event, with the help pf the President of AreaI3 Toastmaster Rohit Sharma and last
but not the least Toastmaster Prashanth, president of the Siemens Bangalore

In all it was an excellent conference with humor, critical thinking and learning
embedded all over. It was a huge success in terms of members turn out and takeaway values for each of the attendees.

Fun @ SBTC
In a country of cricket fans, the number 100 is a significant milestone.
As 2016 draws to an end as the year of milestones, it'll also be recorded the year of
milestones for the Siemens Bangalore Toastmasters club, as we've just had our
100th meeting this year.
However, true to the adage, "Age is just a number" the 100th meeting is dwarfed in
contrast to the achievements through our journey, fun and accomplishments alike.
Needless to say that the century deserved a celebration and thus it was decided
that we'd have an outing in Lalbagh on the then forthcoming weekend.
A lot of games were played, a few speeches and a round of housie as well.
My favorite part of the trip was a game of Mafia. (NO, it's not multi-player mobile
game. Please look up the rules on the net and try it sometime with your friends. )

Then we had the joint meetings. We've had quite a few joint meetings with clubs in
the neighborhood. The themes were very contemporary there too.
Some of the highlights were the "Rajyotsava" themed meeting with Tech Mahindra
and our meeting with CGI on the 14th of this month themed "Resolutions". We
were exposed to some new talents and a lot of ideas were exchanged.
And somewhere in between all of these, we had the Independence Day themed
meeting, the CC1 marathon, turn coat events... the list is endless and exhaustive.
This is over and above the winning of the Golden Gavel plus.
At the time of writing this article, we stand at 129 and are not slowing down. This is
merely the beginning.

BEST MASTER OF MONTH

Recognition motivates each one of us. A work well done when recognized makes us to
work harder and better the next time. To keep up the vigor of our SBTC toastmasters,
the PR team along with the other members of the leadership team came up with a
wonderful concept.
Best Master of Month series was introduced to encourage the toastmasters to give
in their best and to give a slight push to accomplish their goals. The toastmasters were
evaluated based on their performance for the month and were awarded points
accordingly, based on which the winner was decided.
This definitely boosted up the zeal of the toastmasters and there were no bounds of
their happiness to see their names on the posters of Best Master of Month and being
recognized in entire toastmaster fraternity.

Awards and Recognition for term Jun-Dec16

Siemens Toastmasters term for June December 2016 started on a high
expectation with the club achieving Golden Gavel Plus in the last year. As the
expectations were high so would be the struggle to keep the bar higher and higher.
The term started on an encouraging note with huge success of Installation
ceremony of incoming office bearers. The members were active throughout the
term and efforts were visible in terms of the educational awards filled.
Toastmaster Fany had filled her Competent Leader award, while Toastmaster
Srividya lay one foot forward in her leadership track with completion of Advance
Leadership Bronze. Toastmaster Mithun added the crown of Competent
Communicator to his prowess. Various educational sessions and joint meetings
were instrumental in building the learning track for members and they proved to
be worth the time and effort. Moments of truth conducted by Gopal (VPE) was a
reality check and guided the path forward. A huge movement for Siemens
Toastmasters in the current term was hosting the Area level Semi-Annual
conference vic3ory. On one hand it was a great opportunity of learning and rising
up to the occasion, on the other it was an event that would be cherished for long
by Siemens Toastmasters. Toastmaster Balaji, the winner of club level humorous
speech contest proved his mantle in the Area level competition and was awarded
as 1st runners up. Toastmaster Sneha after successfully crossing the hurdle of club
level in the evaluation contest was equally poised at Area level and fetched the
place of 2nd runners up. The entire term was eventful and kudos to each and every
member for making it possible. Thank you all.

Chat with the Area Director

Rohit Sharma
Area I3 Director

Hi Rohit, hope you are doing good, greetings from Siemens Bangalore toastmasters
club. We thank you for all the support you extended to us till now right from the
start of the club. We would be glad if you can tune in with us and answer few of the
things that the club wants to hear from you.
What is it about leadership, that you like the most?
The best thing about leadership is that it gives you the chance to surpass your
inhibitions. Though it might appear to be something really tough, on the contrary it
is probably very easy if you do it with all the focus and dedication. If you've ever had
questions about life and if you ever want to know who you are as a person, then
take up any leadership role in any organization. Trust me even if you do not get the
answer, the people whom you lead will let you know for sure who you are.
What does Toastmasters mean to you?
For me Toastmasters has been a medium of expression of my purest self. It's all
about making someone's day better. So why do I do it? , Simply because it makes
me feel better and makes my day better. So ironically, even though I am a part of
Toastmasters for a very selfish reason of making myself better, this forum teaches
you without fail, that you can only do so by helping someone else.
What's the difference being an area director from the club roles?
Succinctly there is a world of difference between the two and yet there is none.
To elucidate, at the club level you simply worry about your role and about none
other. So our leadership potential is used only as much. However at the Area Level
you get to look at different clubs, each of which has their own challenges. What
works for one club may not work for the other. What is good for one club may be
bad for the other. You get to put yourself into the shoes of the President of all the
five or six clubs in one shot and think of a strategy that will help the club.

This is pretty much what we do at the club too, for our members. But you cannot
have a new club in a jiffy. It takes months to come up with a new club. Thats why
it's all the more challenging, because you need to keep everyone's interests into
perspective and find win-win solutions.
What's your take on Siemens Bangalore toastmasters; please share some of your
experiences?
Siemens BTMC has been one of my fondest clubs. I remember giving my first speech
at Siemens BTMC when our Division Director Santhosh Sharma was the president.
On a lighter note, I love the health meal that you'll get in your canteen which
Santhosh was very kind to have treated me with a long time back.
Besides, as a club, Siemens has always been a star performing club, and all of us
look up to this club for the wonderful set of leaders that it has produced for the
district. I can vouch for the fact that Siemens TMC is undoubtedly the backbone of
Area I3 and I am pretty sure it will keep contributing to the district, to Toastmasters
and to our society at large with great leaders as it has in the past.
What is the message you want to give to members of Siemens Bangalore
toastmasters club?
To all my dearest members of Siemens, I can proudly say that you all are a great
motivation for me in my current role.
Every member of Siemens Toastmasters Club is an inspiration for me to work harder
to see them more successful. Every time a member gives a speech or an evaluation,
I am really happy to see them progress in their communication and leadership
tracks. Even the minutest of progress excites me because that means that we are
moving towards the right direction.
I would leave you'll with a short message which always excites me: "100% never
settle for less." Which essentially means, never settle with where you are but
instead keep improving towards your goal. Siemens as a club has achieved a lot in
the past but I am sure it will not settle for anything less than 100%.
All the best to my I-3 Siemens family members, Take care....
Thanks a ton Rohit; it was wonderful interacting with you. Best wishes for all your
future endeavors.

A BOOK THAT CHANGED MY OUTLOOK

Sometimes, when we undergo an experience as small as meeting someone,
travelling a place, attending a thought-provoking session, it leaves a deep impact on
our thought process, and in turn, our lives.
Something similar happened to me when I had the chance to read a book called
"Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain.
Until my encounter with this book, I was pretty much living with guilt and low selfesteem because I have been living all my life thinking that I lacked the people
orientation that was necessary for survival in corporate environment and society in
general and wondered why I could not change my personality to be that way.
The book was a huge revelation to me as majority of us are in fact like me. It is just
that most of us pretend to be the other way because the world favors the opposite
lot.
The author however warns against our increasing tendency to move towards and
prize extroversion. She emphasizes the need to allow introverts to be as they are,
because there are distinct advantages of being that way. By forcing them to act out
of their true nature, world is on a path to losing thinkers, leaders and inventors of
tomorrow.
It offers great takeaways for parents raising an introvert child, teachers teaching a
mix of gregarious and the shy children, last but not the least, managers leading a
workforce where majority are introverts.
Not only has the book taught me to be comfortable in my own skin, I've started to
take pride in being the quiet and the reflective person. It has also helped me
understand why extroverts behave the way they do. I would strongly recommend all
especially the introverts to discover their true selves and uncover their quiet power
through this book.

ARE YOU REALLY SUCCESSFUL? Or JUST BEING

LUCKY ALL THE TIME
SUCCESS cannot be achieved just by being LUCKY. In fact Luck is an outcome of
series of deliberate acts executed to achieve Success.

I have a fair justification for my thought here. I am not against the people those who
believe in LUCK. However, I am sure that people with the thought process of being
lucky face more disappointment than a person without it. It is very rare that if you
believe in action, you believe in Luck.
In the past many a times I felt that I am not as lucky as my friends or people around
me in terms of the milestones they have achieved. I am sure most of us have
thought the same way. But then I realized that it is not just that they are lucky, it
was their hard work and sacrifice of their comfort zone. This hard work and sacrifice
have transformed in series of deliberate actions over period of time and the result
was in the form of desired success. For us they seem lucky because we are not
aware of the pain and the hurdles they have gone through to achieve their goals.
Also it is equally difficult for successful people to accept such a mediocre adjective of
being Lucky.
On the other hand if you have achieved certain milestones in your life and felt that
you were never too lucky to achieve any of those milestones then you are absolutely
correct. That is because only YOU know the path of ups and downs you have
travelled to reach your ultimate goal. Only YOU know the pain and the sacrifices
you have done for your dream to come true. Now just think will you really accept
the tag of Being Lucky? I dont think you will.
Here, I have a classic example of cricketer MS Dhoni. Many people say he is just a
Lucky player because he had a team of very good players. It is really difficult to
digest that he is a LUCKY player if we take a look at his achievements in cricket
career. If we scratch our heads and carefully analyze then we will come to know how
smartly he makes use of his skills like decision making, confidence and his presence
of mind. Skills are possessed by many but only few know how to utilize them aptly,
and, needless to say, Dhoni's career reflects it all.
Calling high achievers LUCKY is the easiest way to convince ourselves and not to
get out of comfort zone and do something valuable in life. The most common way
we give up on our power is by thinking that we do not have any. So be prepared to
take small steps to walk towards your goal and be successful.
