Purifier Purge

The Most Trusted Purge in the Industry

The Trane Purifier purge is designed to help

owners manage refrigerant losses.

The Purifier purge is microprocessorbased, so it stores the kind of

information you need to know how
much, where, and when a chiller is
leaking. This monitoring of the chillers
purging characteristic helps to detect
leaks, helps to speed repair, and helps to
keep owners compliant with todays
refrigerant management laws.
Refrigerant is saved through the
Purifier Purges highly efficient operation.
It combines low separation temperatures
and the Purifier Plus accessory to
reduce purge refrigerant losses to zero.
Enhanced safeties are also included to
protect the chillers refrigerant in the case
of a large chiller leak or operator error.
The added adaptive mode of
operation allows the purge to run only

when air is present in the chiller. This

added feature reduces the run time of
the purge, thereby saving energy. In the
case of a purge malfunction, the Purifier
purge communicates the problem
source to the servicer through a two-line,
16-character clear language display.
These diagnostics improve purge
servicing by reducing the time it takes
to identify the problem.
Tranes 55 years of low-pressure chiller
experience, high quality standards, and
pre-ship run testing make it the mosttrusted purge in the industry. In fact,
more than 40,000 Trane Purifier purges
are in operation today.

Design and Features
The Trane Purifier purge is a highly
efficient separation system that
removes air, moisture, and other
non-condensables from low-pressure
chillers using refrigerants CFC-11,
CFC-113, and HCFC-123. The system
significantly reduces the amount of
refrigerant lost to the atmosphere during
normal purge operation and protects the
chillers complete charge from accidental
pump out. The design maintains reliable
operation within a range from 40F to
120F chiller-condenser saturation
temperatures. The CFC-11 and HCFC-123
Purifier purges are Underwriters
Laboratory (UL) listed.
The patented design eliminates the need
for troublesome purge compressors,
water connection, and tank float valves.
The free-flow design utilizes a CFC-free,
integrated refrigeration system that is
completely isolated from the chillers
refrigerant. This refrigeration system
is optimized to supply separation
temperatures as low as -5F and enables
the purge to run when the chiller is either
operating or idle. The microprocessorbased control system enables superior
refrigerant protection and provides
significant energy conservation.
Microprocessor-Based Controls
The Purifier purge has microprocessorbased controls that enhance its
capabilities. These controls provide
current purge and chiller operational
data pertinent to managing chiller leaks.
The Purifier purge automatically
measures, stores, and displays purging
measurements of purge exhaust time,
condenser run time, and chiller run time
for the last 30 days and/or for the last
24 hours.

which they can adjust set points, select operating modes,

ting and purging information.
Clear-Language Human Interface
All retrofit Purifier purges use a clear
language human interface. The human
interface is used to control purge
operations and to view stored purging
and/or chiller data. The human interface
has eight keys and a two-line backlit
display. The information displayed on
the human interface is continuously
updated by the purge microprocessor.

Advanced Diagnostic Capability

In the event of unusual purge
operation or failure, the Purifier purge
communicates the problem source
through the human-interface display.
Below are examples of the Purifier purge
diagnostics. These helpful messages will
save the service technician the time it
takes to identify the problem source.

Adaptive Purifier Purge Operation

The Purifier purge has four operating
modes: Stop, On, Auto, and Adaptive.

2. Liquid Level Too High

Stop manually shuts down the

purge. In this mode, the purge will
remain off until it is manually started.

4. Liquid Temp Sensor Fail

On manually turns the purge on. It

will operate continuously until it is
manually changed.
Auto will signal the purge to run
whenever the chiller is on and shut
down whenever the chiller is off.
Adaptive allows non-continuous (or
adaptive) purging whether the chiller
is on or off. While operating in this
mode, power to the purge
refrigeration system is activated only
when purging is necessary, thus
saving energy.
When in the Adaptive mode, the Purifier
purge can also identify when and where
a chiller is leaking. It accomplishes this
by separately tracking and displaying
purge activity when the chiller is on and
off. With this feature, chiller operators
and owners can determine if a chiller
leak is occurring on the high side or low
side of a chiller.

Gravity Free-Flow Design:
Trane Exclusive
Tranes patented gravity free-flow
design is exclusive to the Purifier purge.
It returns liquid refrigerant to the chiller
condenser, eliminating the liquid return
components such as float valves, float
switches, orifice restrictors, and solenoid
valves that are required on designs
that return refrigerant to the chiller
evaporator. When such components fail
or are fouled, the purge, and ultimately
the chiller, will fail. By eliminating these
components, Trane Purifier purge has
provided unequalled reliability for the
40,000 chillers on which it is installed.

Conforms to Canadian Environmental

Standards
When used in combination with the
Trane Purifier Plus carbon canister,
Trane certifies that purge emissions for
R-11, R-123, or R-113, when tested in
accordance with ARI Standard 580, will
be 0.0019 kg/kg air or lower. This is 98%
better than the 0.1 kg/kg air maximum
purge-emissions limit, effective 2003,
set in the Canadian National Action
Plan for the Environmental Control of
Ozone-Depleting Substances and their
Halocarbon Alternatives approved by the
Canadian Council of Ministers of the
Environment (CCME), May 1, 2001.
Exclusive Filter-Drier Technology
Advanced filter technology improves
chiller reliability and speeds service.
The nominal 96-cubic-inch capacity
filter-drier is easier to service than the
replaceable core type canisters. The
filter drier is packed with o-ring seal
threaded fittings on each end for easy
serviceability. Plastic end caps are
shipped on the drier assembly and can
be used to seal the saturated filter-drier
canister, which will keep refrigerant
leakage to a minimum when properly
discarding the saturated canister.

ARI 580 Rated

Trane Purifier purge efficiency
performance is rated in accordance with
ARI Standard 580-2001. An ARI listing
provides assurance that Purifier purge
performance conforms to industry
criterion such as those published in
ASHRAE Guideline 3-1996. Refer to the
ARI Directory of Certified Products at
http://www.ARI.org for the Trane Purifier
purge listing.

Purifier Purge Accessories

TNK00858
Purifier Plus Carbon Canister
The Purifier Plus is an optional, activatedcarbon canister designed to be installed
on the exhaust line of Trane Purifier
purges to obtain near-zero purge
emissions. The Purifier Plus accessory
can be sold with new Purifier purges,
sold as a Purifier Purge upgrade, or sold
separately for the replacement of an
existing canister.
Existing Trane Model PRGA, PRGB, and
PRGC Purifier purges on low-pressure
chillers using CFC-11, HCFD-123, OR
CFC-113, and not having Purifier Plus
carbon canisters, have emissions
exceeding 2003 Canadian 0.1 kg/kg air
emissions limits. For Canadian Purifier
Purges, the retrofit of a Purifier Plus
carbon canister is recommended. In such
retrofits, Trane certifies that purge
emissions for R-11, R-123, or R-113 will
be 0.0019 kg/kg air or lower when tested
per ARI Standard 580.
