The livestock sector of India has the potential for rural transformation, both in

terms of creation of wealth and skilled jobs, provided we are able to infuse
intellectual resources, capital, science and technology, and undertake
organizational innovations. Given the need, market potential and valuable
livestock genetic resources in the country, several international agencies and
commercial entities are contemplating initiation of translational research and
commercialization of the same in livestock sector in India. To take advantage of
traditional knowledge and of the progress of the Science of Genomics and
Biotechnology in Genetic Enhancement of different livestock species, we have created LiveGenome
Foundation as a Not-for-Profit Trust:

To understand and harness traditional knowledge for sustainable utilisation and conservation of
unique livestock genetic resources
To ensure that the fruits of global research and development in genomics and biotechnology are
translated for moderanisation of livesock sector of India
To organise training of young and upcoming generation that would focus on these translational
efforts
To ensure the flexibility and funding capabilities of the private sector with the vision of a non-forprofit entity to be focused on livelihood development in rural India using livestock and allied sectors
as the instruments of change

The primary objective of the foundation is to conserve and improve the

existing prized breeds of Indian livestock. These prized livestock have
resulted from traditional knowledge and wisdom of farmers. However,
modern biotechnology has progressed faster than the translational efforts.
Thus, there is a need for organizational innovation in this sector. The aim is
to create self-sustainable growth model for livestock husbandry in rural India.
This will propel the availability of livestock products of high quality nutrients
to public at large at reasonable prices. The efforts will also result in more
employment opportunities in rural areas. The foundation will engage in public awareness about the genetic
resources of livestock species and advancement of science and technology in these and other related areas.
Vision: Transformation of rural India through
applications of science and technology, and
organisational innovation in animal husbandry and
allied sectors
Mission: Genetics improvement and utilisation of
indigenous livestock breeds using conventional, animal
genomics and biotechnological methods aimed at
enhancement of quality of human life and animal
welfare

Trustees:
1) Dr. Satish Kumar is Chief Scientist and Group Leader at the CSIR- Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB),
Hyderabad. He obtained Master of Science in Animal Genetics and Breeding in 1979 from the National Dairy Research
Institute, Karnal, India and completed his Ph.D. studies in 1994 in Animal Biotechnology from Roslin Institute,
University of Edinburgh, UK. He has worked for Agricultural Research Services of Indian Council of Agricultural
Research for two decades (1982-1999). In addition to his original scientific contributions in animal husbandry and
genetics, his accomplishments include establishment of DNA Fingerprinting Unit at the National Bureau of Animal
Genetic Resources, Karnal and establishment and usage of Gene Targeting Technology for the first time in India at
CCMB, Hyderabad. Satish is an internationally known scientist in population genetics of farm animals. His research team
has discovered independent domestication of sheep in India and signatures of atypical domestication of river buffalo in
India. His on going researches are focused on genetic resistance to infectious diseases in buffalo, in collaboration with
leading international scientists in the area of farm animal genomics. Satish has been past President, and the current
General Secretary, Association of DNA Fingerprinting and Other DNA Technologies. He is a Member of Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO)/ International Society of Animal Genetics Advisory Group on Animal Genetic Diversity,
the only member of this group from Indian sub-continent.
2) Prof. Deepak Pental did his B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Hons School) from Punjab University, Ph.D. from Rutger University
and post-doctoral research work at the University of Nottingham, UK. He is currently Professor of Genetics at the
University of Delhi, South Campus. His group has research interests in breeding of mustard and cotton. He has
extensively published in national and international peer reviewed journals and his lab's work has led to significant
breakthroughs in hybrid seed production technologies and breeding of mustard, a major oilseed crop of India. He is an
elected members of all the major science academies of India and is the recipient of several awards which include
Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship in 2004, Officer Des Palmer Academiques by the Government of Republic of France in
2007, Om Prakash Bhasin Award in 2008, FICCI award in 2010 and a D.Sc. (hc) from the University of Nottingham in
2012. He is a recipient of the J. C. Bose Fellowship of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Prof. Deepak Pental served as Vice-chancellor of the University Delhi from 2005-2010. He has keen interest in policy
related to higher education and agriculture and has written extensively on these issues.
3) Dr. Aravapalli Veerbhadra Rao: Dr. Aravapalli Veerbhadra Rao is Chief Scientist at the CSIR- Centre for Cellular
and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad. He comes from a farmers family and thus, having the first-hand opportunity to
understand the practical side of agriculture and livestock production during his adolescent years. His keen interest in
agriculture and animal husbandry led him to earn a B.Sc. in Agriculture, M.Sc. in Horticulture and Ph.D. in Botany. His
early professional life at a Krishi Vigyan Kendra provided him with insights into the scope of science and technology in
solving problems of rural folks involved in agriculture, animal husbandry and sericulture. Since 1987, while working as a
scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, he has honed his expertise in green institutions and has
contributed in campus development of several organizations. He is a founder member of PEACE (Professionally
Effective Association for Community Empowerment), Hyderabad and has established a model rural farm to demonstrate
the applications of modern science in enhancing the income of rural families through multi-pronged approach and
deployment of resources in a strategic manner. He is a member of World Rose Foundation and Horticulture Society of
India. Dr. Rao has been serving as a resource person to several NGOs involved in rural development.
4) Dr. K. P. Singh has a deep and practical understanding of the first principles of agriculture and animal husbandry, and
of leveraging these for economic betterment of rural India. Being an Agricultural Sciences graduate and a qualified
Ayurveda Ratna, he brings a unique experience of working as Para-Veterinarian for almost three decades in Military
Dairy Farms of Government of India. On one hand he is passionate about applications of technology in genetic
improvement of livestock and modernisation of animal husbandry, at the same time he is committed to the enhancement
of the quality of life of livestock farmers by utilising the traditional knowledge base. While working throughout the
lengths and breadth of India in various farms he has obtained great insights in livestock production and management
using advanced methods of science. Amongst several of his strengths, the ability to interact and bring together diverse
stakeholders, including community leaders, scientists, economists and livestock farmers to the cause of livestock
development is one of the strong pillars for building and nurturing the LiveGenome Foundation
