he Abu Garcia Vendetta rod series was launched

many years ago and has since been helping anglers
catch many fish. Abu Garcia launched the new Vendetta of which has seen some improvements from
its predecessors.

IntraCarbon Technology
The new Abu Garcia Vendetta comes with a 30 ton

graphite blank built using IntraCarbon Technology. IntraCarbon technology uses very thin layers
of multidirectional carbon fibers within the construction of the rod allowing for an increased compression strength making the rod stronger and being to
take more pressure under heavy loads.
Better Sensitivity
With a good quality 30 ton blank the Vendetta

is more sensitive allowing anglers to feel every
bump at the bottom of the lake or pond. The quality stainless steel guides with Zirconium inserts
helps with the transmission of vibrations from the
lines to the rod blank, and onto the anglers hand.

Well Balanced
The Vendetta is a well balanced rod. It is a little

tip heavy but with a reel on the weight is brought
back to the rear giving it a very balanced feel. With
a balanced feel, anglers will be able to fish longer
without feeling fatigue in ones arm.
Exposed Reel Seat
The Vendetta comes with Abu Garcias designed

extreme exposure reel seat a reel seat that provides the angler more connection to the rod blank.
Doing so provides for better sensitivity and feel.

High Quality Components
The components on the Vendetta are high quality

components. The guides are made of quality stainless steel, the reel seat is light weight quality one
piece aluminium reel hood, and quality tapered EVA
handles.

Field Test
To test the Vendetta we took it to the barramundi

pond in Jugra to see how it would fare casting light
weight 1 inch soft baits and to see how they would
fair with the barramundis there. We paired it with
the Pflueger Patriarch one of the lightest reels in
the market.
Superb Caster
The Vendetta cast really well, even with our light

weight soft baits. Accuracy is also good with the
Vendetta 2.0 as the tip wobble is minimal. We got
very good distances with every cast, needless to
say, covering more ground quicker than shorter
distances can.

Fish Management
The Vendetta we used had a few good fights while

bullying many others into submission. The blank
has a good recoil action and has proven itself to be
a superb and fun rod to fish with.

hen Zen Zagan joined forces with Extreme

Anglers an expert custom rod builder, the world finally got rods that are fine tuned to performed but
at mass market prices. Such is the Zen X EA Slow
Pitch rod by Zen Zagan.

Simplistic Design
The Zen X EA Slow Pitch comes in a simple

design of a black base and red at the section
just after the fore EVA. The EVA handles are
designed in such a way as to be comfortable
and yet good looking. Although it looks simple it
does look good too. Perhaps it is because of its
slim profile.
Balanced
I believe most anglers would want a rod that is

lightweight and well balanced. The Zen X EA
Slow Pitch is a lightweight rod and is very well
balanced. This combination gives the rod a very
good feel when picked up.

Softer Tip
Being a slow pitch rod, the Zen X EA Slow Pitch

comes with a softer tip but with enough recoil
power to lift the heavier jigs. With the softer tip
though, one will have to strike harder to ensure
a solid hook up when a fish takes the jig.
Power Zone
When it comes to power, this rod certainly has

lots of power available and is more than capable in handling big and powerful brutes. When
the bend reaches its power zone the rod goes to
work flexing its muscles, taking on powerful fighters, hence my use of the word, magic.

Field Test
We took the Zen X EA to Lumut and put it to

the test. Although it comes with a softer tip it is
capable of casting out 200 gram jigs with relative ease. Whats more impressive is its power.
It managed so many fights well subduing big,
hard fighting predator fishes such as big cobias,
a 4 to 5 feet black tip shark, a giant grouper,
and many more.
Verdict
The Zen X EA Slow Pitch rod is one very capable

rod that is well built and has lots of power. It is
lightweight, well balanced, and can manage fights
with properly big and hard fighting fishes. Should
you want to enhance further its performance, you
can, by changing its guides to Fuji guides.

e like sporty things, dont we? When it comes

to cars many would love to own a Ferrari or one of
these exotics. When it comes to bicycles, sporty
designed carbon fibre frames are preferred to mere
alloys. The list goes on. For fishing rods the Abu
Garcia Bass Beat II fits the ranks of the sporty exotics.

Lightweight Sportiness
The Abu Garcia Bass Beat II is a lightweight carbon graphite rod that is well balanced adorned with
carbon fibre wrap on the brand and identity section
with a golden lining on black thread at the guide
windings giving it a subtle hint of class or luxury in
a cloud of sportiness.
It comes fitted with high quality EVA handles with

a small section fitted with synthetic rubber cork.
The rear EVA ends with a rubber end cap which is
what I prefer in rods as they are easier to clean,
allows the rod to stand easily, etc. The nut of the
reel seat is adorned with carbon fibre further extending the sportiness of the Bass Beat II.

High Quality Components
The Bass Beat II comes with high quality components by Fuji. This not only makes the rod lighter.
It also offers smoother casts giving better distances. Using high quality components does help psychologically too giving the angler extra confidence
when fishing.
Casting Abilities
If you think that the Japanese design, carbon fibre, and gold lines are impressive; try fishing with
it. Of course I did just that casting for barramundis
at a barramundi pond, casting 1 inch grubs with
jigheads as heavy as 1.8 grams to 7 grams. If you
are wondering how it did, it did really well casting
the 7grams in the wind. 1.8 grams is tough but
still managed to.

Feel Em All
The Bass Beat II is like a telegraph machine sending information to the users hands. It is a sensitive rod allowing one to feel everything at the bottom such as the terrain, structures, and of course
a fishs bite.
Power In Your Hands
Overkill is the word especially in these ponds.

The Bass Beat II that I used has a softer springy
tip which is great for casting and a strong backbone at about 70% of the rod giving lots of reflex
power when battling the brutes. Push it further
and it reciprocates. I love how it handles the fight.

The Abu Garcia Bass Beat II is a fantastic rod. It

looks good, feels good, and performs really well.
It comes with high quality Fuji components making
it a lovely high performance rod. Certainly a rod
worth going for.

ecently I have been teaching small 1 inch soft

plastic grubs to swim with the hopes of seducing
barramundis while doing so. Casting these small
grubs can be quite a challenge eapecially since
they are lightweight and the area where I fish is
windy.

Taking Flight
Walking to the waters edge and slowly walking

in is boring and thus taking flight into the pond
is the only option. The further the better. The
Xrossfield does this really well casting our little
learner way out giving it more area to swim. The
tip is really good for casting these lightweight
baits being flexible yet not too soft.
Nice Blank
The Xrossfield has a nice blank for this sort of

fishing. The 30 Ton graphite blank it comes in has
a good backbone to about 65% of the rod followed by a smooth curve all the way to the tip.
This adds to the enjoyment of the angler during
the battles. That said, the blank certainly does
not feel like a 30 Ton graphite blank but still, it is
a very enjoyable rod to fish with.

Clean Look
The Xrossfield comes with a clean black and

white design giving it a simple unassuming look.
This simple look does not translate to plain or
boring. It is simple in a good looking way.

The Xrossfield comes with quality Fuji guides

and reel seat providing good performance with
smoother casts and reduced wear and tear on
fishing lines. It also comes with high quality EVA
handle.

ne of my favourite rods from Berkley is the Series One rods. The first time I laid eyes on them I
was captivated especially by its skeleton designed
reel seat. That was probably some 15 years ago.
Wait, maybe more. That was when I saw it first.
The Series One was actually introduced some 30
years ago.

Berkley recently launched the new Series One

rod and it comes with the skeleton designed reel
seat that I like. Needless to say I went in search
of the new Series One for months and finally got
myself one to test and it was love at first sight.
Classic Design
The new Berkley Series One rods have a classic

look to them coming in dark granite looking blank
colour and cork reel seat. Take a closer look and
one will notice the spiral wrapping of the blank
that makes the Series One look even better. The
copper coloured words adds more character to
its design.

Precision Reel Seat
While the reel seat design certainly is an eye

catcher it has something else that is also available in the older Series One, a reel seat clicker. This is what Berkley calls a Precision Reel
Seat as the reel seat lock clicks whilst it is being turned.
The Series One comes with a 30 ton 100% carbon fibre blank that is lightweight and very well
balanced. I have the one rated medium light (ML)
and I especially like the way it feels being not too
soft but with its rigidity done just right.

The series one comes with high quality stainless

steel guide frames with deep pressed Zirconium
Oxide Inserts that gives them higher durability.
The reel seat is Berkleys own design and so
far has only been used on the Series One rods.
Cork handle is used to bring down its weight
and to offer better grip.

To test how it performs we took it to the barramundi ponds in Jugra where we will be fishing
light using one inch Berkley Powerbait Grubs and
Decoy Jigheads. I decided to pair the Series One
with the very lightweight Pflueger Patriarch spinning reel of which makes them a perfect pair.

Casting Abilities
When it comes to casting, the Series One cast

very well and smooth of which I attribute to the
guides used as well as to its lovely blank. Having a rigidity that is just nice gives enough flex
to cast out the baits without wobbling too much.
This gives it good accuracy and distance.
Sensitivity
Using 30 ton 100% carbon fibre blank has another advantage and that advantage is sensitivity.
The Series One is a sensitive rod. I felt almost
every bump, rock, etc. at the bottom as I swam
the grub. It telegraphed information to my hands
well.

Fish Fighting
We did hit some good sized barramundis on the

Series One. The rod bent into a smooth and lovely curve absorbing the runs of the barramundi
but it has a good backbone that recoils the rod
back helping to fight the fish; the testament of a
good blank. The Series One rod I used can certainly take on larger and harder fighters.
The new Berkley Series One rods are quality

rods with very good performance. They are lightweight, sensitive, cast well, fights well, and they
feel really good. They are not cheap rods though
but should you have the budget, they are worth
dollars spent.

emember when you first got your drivers licence and the keys to your first car? Remember
the heart pumping excitement you felt when you
turned the ignition? When it comes to fishing reels I
seldom get these feelings these days having spent
many years in the industry until I was handed the
new Abu Garcia Revo MGXtreme.

Heart Pumping Excitement
As I held the new Revo MGXtreme for the first time

in my hands, I instantly fell in love with it. It was
love at first sight (maybe first touch). It felt light
and it felt snug in my hands being a smaller sized
reel. It was made for me (I wish).
Sporty Design
The new Revo MGXtreme is one sporty looking

reel. It comes with carbon fibre swept handle and
carbon fibre star drag. It has metallic red spool
control cap, handle knob (cork) covers, etc. Its
body is black in colour. Its good looks is not of
the Ferrari kind but more like the Bat mobile sort
of look. Dark and good looking.

Lighter In Weight
Comparing to the older Revo MGXtreme, the new

MGXtreme is lighter in weight. The previous Revo
MGXtreme weighs 139grams while the new one
weighs 128 grams. The difference may not seem
to be a lot in numbers but when it comes to feel,
the new MGXtreme feels somewhat lighter. Psychological perhaps.
IVCB-4 Brakes
The new Revo MGXtreme comes with the Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake (IVCB-4), a
proven and effective breaking system that allows
for very manageable casts. The IVCB-4 system
uses what is called a flying arm system to control
the spool.

Drag Power
To test the drag power of the Revo MGXtreme we

took it to our lab and put it through the pressure test.
We turned up the drag to about 80% and managed
to a respectable 8lb with zero loss of smoothness.
We then dial the pressure up higher getting a reading of slightly over 12lb. Still smooth. We squeezed
more and managed to peak at about 13.6lb; 1.6lb
over specs.
*Straight pull test without flexing the rod.
Live Performance
We took it to our usual field testing arena; the

pond where gladiators such as the Amazon red
tail catfish, the Mekong catfish, Asian red tail catfish, etc. standby for a fight and photo opportunities. First off; the Revo MGXtreme cast really
well giving good distances. Its IVCB-4 brakes
work really well making it an easy reel to cast.

The Battle
The Revo MGXtreme managed to turn quite a few

fishes, escaping the snags (luck too played its part)
and helping to tire the gladiators out fast with its
high drag. That said, we did lose a fish too that just
couldnt be stopped.

capable reel that is smaller in size and fits snugly
in my hands. Fitting snugly has a advantage. I
had a better overall grip which adds confidence
too during casting as well as during fights. As for
smoothness, it is smooth although one can certainly feel the IVCB-4 brakes working.

he Abu Garcia Revo Toro S is one of Abu Garcias

answers to low profile saltwater casting reels. It comes
in white side plates and a black frame looking somewhat
like a reel made for the imperial storm troopers who are
the main ground force of the Galactic Empire (Star Wars).
High Performance
The Revo Toro S is a powerhouse of a reel that is

made to fight hard, subduing monster after monster.
It is one heck of tough reel that can take in lots of
lines thus allowing you to mess about with the saltwater gladiators of the seas.

Powerful Drag
The drag system on the Revo Toro S would give hard

fighting brutes a run for their money. It comes with a
Power stack Carbon Matrix drag system rated with
a 25lb max drag. To see if it meets what it claims we
took it to our lab for a bit of torture.
Lab Test
Back at our lab we put it through the pressure test.

Securing the line to a ground anchor we started to
apply force. We got it easily to 20lb with the drag
running smooth. We continued on to a high drag
pressure almost maxing out the drag and we got it
to 26.5lb with the drag still smooth.

To see how it will performed we took it to Pulau Jarak (Jarak Island) for a test drive. The Revo TORO
S is a reel for big things.
Casting Abilities
The Revo Toro S come with a magnetic braking system that has 8 magnets to help control the spool.
Casting big lures or jigs are thus its forte. That being
said the Revo Toro S is a decent reel to cast with
giving decent distances with very good spool control.

Fighting Abilities
We managed to bully a few fishes dragging them out

of their hiding place with relative ease. The larger
round knob makes cranking and fighting more comfortable. Although the fishes caught are of decent
weight, none of them managed to provide a fight
worthy of the Revo Toro S. The reel has proven itself to be an overkill in this instance.
Summary

The Volante comes with high quality holographic

coloured body that creates flashes in the water attracting predator fishes to attack. Some of

Field Test
We tested the Volante Jig in Lumut. With the currents being quite strong we used an jigs from 150
grams during the slower currents to 250 grams when
the current picks up. We dropped them to the bottom
and slow pitched them up to about 5 to 10 feet off the
bottom depending on where were fishing.

Fish Approved
The Volante jig is very effective and has a very

good hit rate in these waters. Here in Lumut
they have proven to work on grouper (very effective), snapper (effective), cobia (very effective), tuna (somewhat effective), shark, leatherjacket, and squid (very effective).
Verdict
On my future jigging trips, the Rod Ford Volante jigs

will certainly be part of my arsenal. They have proven themselves in the waters off Lumut and I am sure
that they will work in other areas too. They are quality jigs with attractive colours that fishes seem to
have given their approval. Now, one will just need to
learn how to work them effectively.

how you use it is important. You may have good rods,
super smooth reels, tough and almost invisible lines, and
your fish finder is beeping like a cheap broken car alarm;

would be really low.
Replicating Good Lures
Good lures catch fish and it is no secret that they

get replicated. Makes sense right? Who on earth
would want to replicate a lure that does not catch
fish? Thus comes the OR Craft Code lures. The OR
Craft Code lures are a replica of the M Blue Code
lures (or could it be M Blues Code).

Nice Swimmer
With a few Code lures in our hands we decided to

take them swimming at a nearby pond. Using light
tackle we got the code flying out to very good distances. They cast easy and well. They swim really
well to with a tight wiggle.
Would Fish Eat Them?
We may like the way it swims but what about the

fish? Twitching them just outside some underwater
weeds did the trick. Pissed of peacock bass had a
field day hitting the Code. Or was it the Code having a field day taking hits from the peacock bass...
Hmm, whatever. The code still won.

branded lures cost a bomb. Well, if you dont mind

proven themselves over and over. Still we wanted
to know how good they are. Naturally the best thing
to do will be to bring them to our lab and have them
tested. We decided to test the Decoy Tracin Single
31 OP lure hooks.

Before we did anything to these hooks we needed to

know if they are sharp to begin with. We ran it on our
plastic spoon to see if it will catch on. The Tracin Single
31 hooks caught on easily proving that they are sharp.

Next we drowned them in freshwater for 24 hours. Most

of us would not leave our hooks in water for 24 hour
when we fish thus this test will be more than sufficient
to see if they will rust in freshwater for the duration of
our fishing. After 24 hours in the freshwater we found
no sign of rust. We ran it on our plastic spoon and they
caught on which means that the hooks are still sharp.

Saltwater Test
Next we drowned them in saltwater for 24 hours to see if
they would be able to go on for at least 24 hours without
rusting in this corrosive solution. After 24 hours we removed them from the saltwater solution and inspected
them. No signs of rust.

Final Shar
Next we just had to run them on our plastic spoon to see

if they are still sharp. No point fishing with a blunt hook
right? These hooks caught onto the plastic spoon which
means that they remained sharp even after drowning
them in saltwater for 24 hours.
Summary
We have found the Decoy Tracin Single Hooks to be

good hooks. They are indeed quality hooks and they
have proven themselves in our lab in both salt and freshwater environments as well as the sharpness test. If you

ith soft baits being one of my favourite ways

of fishing, jigheads are a norm in my tackle boxes.
There are many brands available in the market and
one of them is Owner. Owner has long made jigheads. They also make them for other brands. Thus
this time I decided to test owners own jigheads.
Sharpness Test
Running the Owner Ultra Head jigheads hooks on

the surface of a plastic spoon to see if it will catch
on. Sharp hooks will catch on and even hold on
under steady hands. The Ultra Head caught onto
the surface of the spoon too. We test all from the
pack and they proved to be sharp.

Saltwater Test
Like all the hooks that weve tested, we put the

Ultra Head to the saltwater test too. We always
say that we are trying to get them to rust but in
reality all we want to know is how well they can
manage corrosion. With that in mind we drowned
the Ultra Head in saltwater for 24 hours (more).
After
Lab Test
24
After 24 hours we removed the Ultra Head from

the saltwater solution and inspected it for signs
of rust. We didnt see any. Next is to run the
hook through the surface of the plastic spoon to
see if it is still sharp. Yes, it remains sharp.

Field Test
It has done well thus far. Next we took it to a stream

and attached a Berkley Powerbait Grub softbait and
started to cast with the hopes of catching a fish. In
a short time a snakehead decided to take the bait.
With a like strike the hook was set and the fish
made its way up the banks for a photo session.
Verdict
The Owner Ultra Head jigheads are super sharp

and they resist corrosion well. They certainly are good quality jigheads and good quality
hooks. I certainly will not expect anything less
from Owner. Price wise let us put it this way;
it matches the quality and is certainly reasonable.

Part 3
n the last issue we looked at whats needed for

bottom fishing as well as knots. I hope youve been
practising your knots and are now eager to right
up. I will assume you have and jump right into rigging up.
Filling Lines
^ Spinning reel secred to rod and spooled with super

line (fused).
Before you fill your reel with lines what you will
need to do is to secure your reel to your rods reel
seat. Next bring your main line out. Main line is the
line that you will be filling you reel with. You will be
filling up with either monofilament main lines or super lines such as braided lines or fused lines. Both
have different tying requirements.

Monofilament
Should you decided to use Monofilament lines, good

news, youve got the easy one. First insert the line
through the largest guide on your rod. It will be the
one nearest your reel. If you use a two piece rod,
you only need to use the butt section. Next follow
these steps...
* Checkout the benefits and disadvantages of Monofilament in the last issue.
1. Lift up your reels bail arm.

2. Tie a uni knot to the spool.
3. Tighten the noose.
4. Close the bail arm.
*Ensure that the noose is tight.

Fill The Spool
>Do not fill the spool to the brim.
Get a small bucket of water and drop the spool into

it. Next, start reeling. The first few turns will require
extra attention to ensure that the lines are sitting
properly and not puffing up. Next, continue reeling
in lines until the spool is almost full leaving about
2mm of space from the line to the tip of the spool.
>The roller at the bail arm helps reduce line twist.
The reason to drop the spool into a bucket of water

is to avoid something called line twist. You see, because spinning reel uses a bail arm with a roller to
take in lines, there will be friction between the roller
and the line. As the bail arm turns to take in line with
friction between the line and the line roller? The line
begins to twist slightly. Placing the spool in a bucket
of water allows the spool to turn freely while the water reduces friction between the line roller and the
line.

Super Lines
This lines are a little tricky to spool up. If possible

get help from another person (hopefully an angler).
Super lines do not hold onto spools well and tends
to slip. Not an issue with most modern mid to high
end reels that come with spools ready for super
lines also called braid ready spools. These spools
have a rubber section that helps the super line grip
the spool.
>A reel with braid ready spool.
What if your reel does not have a braid ready spool?

Worry not. There are two things that you can do.
a. Use a monofilament backing line. This means that
you will first spool in some monofilament line securing it directly onto the spool. Take it at least enough
line to have a layer of Monofilament line covering
the spool. Next attach the spool of super line to the
monofilament line and reel it in.
*Read the entire section on spooling in super lines
before you start spooling.

b. Attach double sided tape to the spool before

reeling. The double sided tape provides grip to the
super line allowing you to tie the super line directly
onto it. Use the thin (not spongy type) double sided
tape.
Pressure Needed
Another thing to remember about spooling in super

lines is that pressure on the spool is needed when
spooling in the line thus why I recommend getting
help from a friend. The super line will have to sit
in the spool tightly. Having a looser spool of super
lines in your spool will cause something a dig in.
Dig ins happen when the line digs into the spool
of lines trapping it self within the spool of lines and
getting stuck; a sure fire way of losing fish and maybe even breaking tackle.

Tying the Leader
After filling the spool with main line it is now time to

secure a leader of about two feet. You will have to
use a snap or a snap swivel (we recommend using
a snap swivel). Before you go on it is now time to
secure the tip aection of your two piece rod. When
you have done so, thread your line through all the
guides exiting at the smallest.
With line through all guides use the uni knot to tie
the main line to one end of the swivel or snap swivel.
Ensure that you lubricate the knot before tightening
it. Secure the leader to the other end of the swivel
or snap swivel using the same uni knot.

Tying the Hook
With leader in place use the improved Clinched

knot to tie on the hook. Ensure that you lubricate
the knot with some water before tightening it.
Lock On A Sinker
There are two ways to secure a Sinker. One is to

use a line to secure the Sinker. Use a 1 feet length
monofilament for this. Use the uni knot to tie one end
of the line to the Sinker and the other to the swivel.
The other way is easier. Just lock the Sinker to the
snap of the snap swivel and you are all set up and
ready to fish.

Drag On Spinning Reels
n this issue we will look at where the drag is located on spinning reels. On spinning reels the drag
is located on the spool. Turning the drag cap that
holds the spool in place allows the angler to lower
or increase the pressure. This is found on most
spinning reels.
Drag At Different Places
Some spinning reels come with the drag knob at the

bottom or at the rear of the reel. These reels usually come with a push button release to remove
the spool. The drag works the same on such reels.
Turn the knob at the bottom to lower or increase
the drag pressure.

Two Drags In One Reel
^ Penn Fierce II with 2 drags. This is at the spool.
There are spinning reels that come with both a drag

at the spool and a drag at the bottom or rear. Reels
such as the Penn Spinfisher V Live Liner and Shimanos Baitrunner spinning reels have two sets of
drags. One for the Live Liner, and the other to battle
the fish.

The Live Liner functions allows the fish to take the

bait and run without feeling the usual high resistance of a drag which is usually a lot higher. This
greatly reduces the fishs suspicion or awareness
that anything is awry with the bait and thus it holds
on to it much longer.

When the Live Liner function is turned off, the drag

automatically kicks in and this is when the battle
starts. This drag is the one with much higher pressure and is the one that will tire out the fish.

Viper Double Dragon Review
n this article I will share my thoughts on a rod I

have been able to fish with over the past few months.
This rod is the Viper Double Dragon. I had the opportunity to fish with the limited edition 1 piece 10-20lb
baitcasting version which is economically priced and
very versatile based on what I experienced.
I will begin with the technical aspects of the rod. The model
I fished with is 66 in length. It is a medium heavy rod with
a moderate fast action. The rods taper puts it in a good
position for anglers that love pond fishing and the softer
tip is excellent for roll casts and fishing crankbaits. It is
made of 24 ton graphite with quality standard guides. The
split rear handle is made of EVA along with a cork fore grip
which provides grip, comfort and enhances its aesthetic
value.

Now lets talk about performance. The length was

perfect for long casts. Casting regular lures for Giant Snakeheads and Barramundi over long distances was no problem. The soft tip was great for loading up baits before sending them out. The length
also made it great for hook setting and fighting fish
over long distances. Over the few months I fished
with it, it excelled both in long range and close
range fishing.
For a medium heavy rod with a 24T graphite

blank, the Double Dragon picked up bites very
well. I experienced this throughout fishing soft
plastics with it, particularly while night fishing. I
caught a few solid snakeheads. This 49cm was
one of them. Fishing in the dark without seeing
my line meant I had to rely on the rod totally to
know what was going on.

I had bites from snakeheads, catfish and jaguar

cichlids. I managed to capitalize on a majority
of the bites. At one point I had a Jaguar Cichlid
peck my soft plastic subtly three casts in a row.
On the third bite, I let it take the soft plastic,
thinking it was a catfish before setting the hook
and landing it. For the whole night I enjoyed bottom hopping soft plastics without worry of missing a bite.
Despite the soft tip, the Double Dragon has a

strong backbone for pumping fish. The biggest
fishes I managed to land with the Double Dragon
were kilo plus haruans and fighting them was
fun. Kilo plus haruans are quite easy to land but
I am very sure the Double Dragon is capable
of fighting and landing powerful fish like Giant
Snakeheads with no trouble.

One of the many snakeheads I caught while fishing small grubs with the Double Dragon. Even
small bites were detected as I bottom hopped
small grubs. I also picked up small bites while
fishing a grub in saltwater. This small snakehead
was pumped out and away out of structure very
quickly. It stood no chance and I even pulled up
some old line with a spoon lure attached.
The Double Dragons proven versatility for both

saltwater and freshwater applications makes it a
valuable asset to have. This grouper was caught
while going for bigger game. The nibbles were
subtle and letting the soft plastic sit for a second
resulted in a hook up.

I really hoped I could put the Double Dragon

against some monsters to truly push it but unfortunately that didnt happen. However, from
my experience with the Double Dragon, it is a
rod that is capable of handling all kinds of fish.
It was comfortable to fish with and it is a powerful rod with good looks, a good price point and is
worth having.
That is what I can conclude from roughly 5
months of fishing with it.

A Little Diamond
Granted that no hotel is perfect, one of the hotels that

rank highly to me personally in the historical city of
Malacca is The Settlement Hotel. This boutique hotel
seemed to have had a less than illustrious beginning
but has since made it through the fire turning into a
little diamond.
> Friends and fellow travellers hanging out at this long
and large table cut out from a humongous log.
The Settlement Hotel Melaka offered some of the

friendliest service from the friendly front office staffs
to the waiters and waitresses that are always smiling, and one that I have to mention is the very polite
and friendly chef that prepared my omelette and
personally brought it to me on the table. He did the
same for my friends and other diners too.

It has been said that everything begins at the top

and this saying has certainly been proven here. I
had the good fortune of meeting Laura Tan, the General Manager, and during our chat I saw the reason
why I have been enjoying my experience here. She
is a no nonsense leader who is helpful and polite,
paying close attention to service and guests. This
certainly is leadership by example.

A Mixture
The Settlement Hotel, Malacca, used to be a government building back in the 60s but has since been
restored into what it is today, a delightful boutique
hotel that personifies a mixture of a modern hotel
with olden days architecture including century old
tiles from a Palembang mosque in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Comfy Bedrooms
The mixture of old and new continues into the bedrooms with antique looking furniture such as the
writing table, side table, etc. and a modern and very
comfortable bed, modern bathroom amenities, etc.
The bedrooms are well furnished without being too
heavily decorated. It even has a lovely English tea
set should one want to enjoy tea the English way.
The beds are very comfortable featherbeds with

feather duvets, and down pillows. Being very particular with beds , pillows, and everything that I go to
sleep with I must say that I slept really well and the
comfort levels are amongst the top of hotel beds.
Another very important point is that they are clean.

The bathroom comes with a bathtub that keeps the

water warm for a much longer period as compared
to the usual bathtubs used at most hotels. This is
superb especially for distressing and relaxing in a
tub of bubbles floating on water that remains warm
long after one has had ones soul recharged.

The luxury villas are a must see. They look like traditional village houses. Inside is a king size comfortable antique looking bed, antique looking wardrobe,
table, chairs, etc. Even the bathroom comes with
tiles that brings one back to a once upon a time
period.

The Settlement Hotel has a Traditional Spa Village offering traditional massages, body wraps and
scrubs, facial therapies, nail care services, etc. to
help one relax and rejuvenate. After a relaxing treatment one can go relax by the pool or if the temptation is too strong; to jump in and wade about.
Art Gallery
Antiques are not the only things that make The Settlement Hotel, Melaka, special. There is also an art
gallery in the hotel, the Yeak Ping Lian Gallery. Yeak
Ping Lian was born on 18th November 1993 and
has a condition called the savant syndrome (autistic). Although suffering with savant syndrome he is
blessed with a remarkable ability to create art.

Mosque I was sold for RM100,000.00 to an anonymus bidder at the Grand Auction of the RDA Charity
Ball in Malaysia back in 20th November 2004. Although he now resides in Sydney, Australia, his work

Settlement Hotel, Melaka.

The roof top of The Settlement Hotel is an open air

dining area with views of the surrounding area. It is
also a good place to shoot the sunset. At night it becomes a relaxing place to sit back with friends and

Suan Nyonya Restaurant
ne of the things that travellers look for while travelling is food. Not just any food but good local delights.
That said, Malacca is home to Nyonya and Peranakan
food thanks to the Nyonya and Peranakan cultures that
have long been part of Malacca. Suan Nyonya Restaurant serves them both.
Good Location
One of the must visit areas in Malacca city is the Dataran

Pahlawan (Warriors Square). This square is surrounded
by many attractions including historical buildings, shopping areas, and food outlets. Restaurant Nyonya Suan
is located opposite a shopping mall called Merdeka Plaza.

My Favourite
We ordered 7 dishes. Amongst them, my favourite dish

is the calamari and prawns cooked in chilli paste or simply called locally as sambal sotong udang. This dish
is a dish for chilly lovers. The sauce is sweet and spicy,
mixed with sweet natural juices from the squid and
prawns.
Chicken Dish
Another meaty dish that I like is the Rendang Chicken.

This is a spicy dish with chilli and various other herbs. I
have often heard of flavours bursting in ones mouth; this
dish is quite an explosion. The fusion of herbs and chilli
brings together flavours that complement each other.

Fish Dish
The fish dish is another superb dish. Although this dish

certainly will not get points for its decor, it get full points
for taste. This dish is called ikan lemak nenas or pineapple fragrant fish. The fish used here is seabass or barramundi and it is cooked with chilli, coconut milk, various
herbs and spices giving it a rich flavourful taste.
Greens
Personally I am not a fan of vegetables but the spicy

water spinach dish called kangkung belacan (a type of
paste) is one that I enjoyed during our meal; however,
it was the chilli okra dish that really did it for me. Okra
on its own is rather bland but the sweet and sour chilli
turned it into an addictive dish.

Other Dishes
The other dishes being a fried egg dish, and a tofu dish
was good too but nothing to shout about. We ended our
dinner with Chendol Gula Melaka, a desert of green
jelly strips served with coconut milk and Malaccan brown
sugar; a delight for the sweet toothed foodie.

Warung Kari Kambing & Asam Pedas Claypot is famous
for its mutton curry and a dish called asam pedas, a
sweet, sour, and spicy tamarind sauce dish; cooked with
fish.
Early Eaters
Foodies far and near flock to the stall as early as 6am

to power up for the day and they stock up energy with
the intake of mutton curry and rice. It may be hard to
fathom eating such a heavy meal for breakfast but stall
owner, Yusri Nadin has been cooking his spicy specialty
for early eaters for many many years.

Two goats are prepared daily which is indeed too little

since the demand is high and his pot of mutton curry
goes empty by 9am, but he refuses to cook more. He
has long decided to focus on getting his famous curry
cooked right although in small quantities, instead of sacrificing quality for larger quantities. Starving the market
has been a good strategy for some businesses too.
Other Dishes
Although the stall is famous for its mutton curry and

has been dishing out mutton curry for about 20 years
now, there are other dishes too that will make one drool.
The asam pedasclay pot dishes are not to be missed.
These dishes are filled with flavours that keeps the appetite growing even when one feels full.

Worth The Effort
Should you decide to visit the historical city of Malacca,

go a little further to an area called Asahan of which is
about an hours drive away; and order yourself a mutton
curry dish plus the asam pedas claypot dish. It certainly is worth the trip but remember to be there early. The
