FEELING STRESSED? Youre not alone

The pre-med experience can be a stressful. Managing rigorous coursework, grading curves, research & clinical experience, the MCAT, a personal life, and
expectations (yours and perhaps your family) can feel overwhelming.
Speak to someone you are comfortable with. Just
talking about the situation can help open up new
ways of managing your stress.

Medical School Requirements

(Medical Schools Requirements compiled by Inna Gergel, SAO, Integrative Biology and Physiological Sciences)
ADMISSIONS AND APPLICATION
Acceptance to medical school is very competitive. Applicants must submit transcripts, scores from the Medical College Admission Test, and letters of
recommendation. Schools also consider character, personality, leadership qualities, and participation in extracurricular activities. Most schools require an
interview.
Before you take the MCAT you should have completed Life Science 1, 2, 3, and 4, Chemistry 14ABCD or 20AB/30AB, Physics 6ABC or 1ABC, and Biochemistry
153A. You should also be familiar with major concepts in Psychology and Sociology.
PREPARATION COURSEWORK

DIFFERENT SCHOOLS MAY REQUIRE DIFFERENT COURSEWORK AND STRONGLY RECOMMEND OTHER COURSEWORK.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO LOOK AT EACH SCHOOL INDIVIDUALLY TO FIND OUT THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS.

One year of BIOLOGY with lab

Taking the Life Sciences series 1-4 and 23L will satisfy this requirement.

Two years of CHEMISTRY (through Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry)

Taking 14ABBLCCLD or 20ABLAL/30ABBL and Biochemistry 153A and 153L will satisfy this requirement.

One year of PHYSICS

Taking the Physics series 6ABC or 1ABC, 4AL, 4BL will satisfy this requirement.

One year of MATH

Taking Math 3ABC or Math 31AB, 32A or LS 30AB and Statistics will satisfy this requirement. One year of math can include statistics.

STATISTICS
Taking Statistics 10, 13, Biostatistics 100A or Psychology 100A* will satisfy this requirement. One quarter of statistics is required for some
schools including UCLA and strongly recommended for others. *Check with individual schools for acceptability of classes offered outside of the
Statistics department.

One year of ENGLISH

12 | P a g e

Writing I and Writing II courses, select general education intensive writing courses, and any upper division English literature or English
Composition courses will satisfy this requirement.

Upper Division Biology Course

Completing a course in molecular genetics, cell and molecular biology, advanced cell biology will satisfy this requirement. Psychobiology courses will
NOT be considered

Knowledge and cultural competency of at least one FOREIGN LANGUAGE

This need not have been taken at the college level. If your future plans include working in California or the southwestern states, Spanish is
recommended.

HUMANITIES and SOCIAL SCIENCE courses

The non-science GPA is an important component to your overall academic record, and liberal arts education. Courses in the following can
enhance your communication skills and overall understanding of the world: Anthropology, Communication Studies, Economics, any ethnic
studies area (e.g. Womens Studies, LGBT Studies, Afro-American Studies, Chicana/Chicano Studies, Near Eastern Studies), Philosophy, Political
Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Speech to name a few. It is important to look at individual school sites to find if they recommend any
courses in particular.

Applicants should also consider volunteering at a local hospital or clinic to gain practical experience in the health professions. In addition, a well-rounded sample
of extra-curricular activities or work experiences, both related and unrelated to medicine, will help broaden an applicant's knowledge and development:
Community service. This is an indication of your commitment to helping others. Your community service doesn't have to be through UCLA; it can be in
your home community, through a church group, etc., but your record of service should show a genuine commitment.
Experience in a health care setting. This is to show that you have a realistic idea of what being a physician is about.
Research. Some admission committees dont consider this absolutely necessary, but most schools will expect you to have done research if you were an
undergraduate at UCLA. You neednt have earned units for it, but be prepared to answer a few questions about your research at your med school
interviews. There is no minimum number of quarters of research involvement. Consult the Undergraduate Research Center for help in choosing a
sponsor or enrolling in SRP (Student Research Program).
