MichiganTechofferscourses,undergraduateandgraduatecertificate
programs,andaprofessionalMastersprogramfocusingonhybridelectric
vehicle(HEV)engineering.
Thecurriculumprovidesadvancedknowledgeandhands-onlaboratories
inthedesign,analysis,control,calibration,andoperatingcharacteristics
ofHEVs.Thetechnologiesrequiredtoachievetransportationelectrification
includecleanandefficientinternalcombustionenginesande-machines,
aswellasemergingtechnologiesforadvancedbatteries,fuelcells,and
therecharginginfrastructurerequiredforeachtechnology.
ThecurriculumisbasedonanonlinecourseinHEVtechnologies
developedbyMichiganTech,GeneralMotors,andAVL,deliveredin
southeastMichiganinpartnershipwithTheEngineeringSocietyofDetroit
(ESD)andselectedbytheMichiganAcademyofGreenMobilityfortraining
automotiveengineers.Developmentofthecurriculumandmobile
laboratoryisfundedbyaDepartmentofEnergygrantunderthe
TransportationElectrificationprogram.

togetherwiththeirassociatedlaboratorycourses
4296and5296, undertakeacomprehensivestudy
ofhybridelectricvehicleperformanceandsystem
optimization.Powertraincomponentanalysisand
modelingtechniquesfocusingonpowerflowsand
lossesaredevelopedtoquantifyvehicleperformance
overdrivecycles.Studentswilldevelopvehicleand
subsystemrequirementsintheformofaVehicle
TechnicalSpecification(VTS)anddevelopavehicle
modelforsimulation.Thesetoolsareappliedto
designanddevelopthecontrolandcalibrationfor
thehybridpowertraintomeettheVTS.
