HISTORY

McWilliams wines are known for their exceptional quality and

taste. Generation after generation the family has contributed
immensely to the Australian wine industry. It all began with
Samuel McWilliam planting vines in Corowa, NSW in 1877.
After Samuel McWilliam passed away in 1902, his daughters
bought Sunnyside Vineyard. J.J. McWilliam transported
50,000 vines to Riverina, in doing so, starting wine making in
1913. A few years later, J.J. McWilliam started Hanwood
Estate winery in 1917. In 1935 for the first time, their wines
were sold outside Australia.
In 1941, the family took over Mount Pleasant estate in Hunter
Valley which lead to winemaker Maurice OShea joining
McWilliam family and creating one of the best Australian
wines. With the growing demand for premium table wines,
McWilliams released first varietal table wines in 1960. In
1973, at Hanwood Estate, a cellar door was opened. 1977
marked the 100-anniversary of this winery. Jim Brayne
became the Chief Winemaker of the winery in 1986. 2004 was
a remarkable year for McWilliams wines which saw selling of
500,000 cases of Hanwood Estate wines across the globe.
