Following are the questions you must solve:
1. A lecturer asked his student to perform a survey on the average height of first year engineering
students. Student A carried the task by sampling 40 students, student B sampled 10 students
and student C sampled 40 students. Following is the data obtained by A, B and C.

a. Find and for all samples (A, B & C)

b. Find a 99% confidence interval for mean height of first year engineering students,
assuming an approximately normal distribution, using
i. Sample A
ii. Sample B
iii. Sample C
c. Given that = 164.4450.
i. What can be concluded from the interval obtained in b(i) & b(ii).
ii. What can be concluded from the interval obtained in b(i) & b(iii).
d. Using Sample A, find 95% confidence interval for proportion of students with height
170cm.
e. Using Sample A, find 95% confidence interval for 2 .
2. Pak Mats Restaurant has just found out that one of its customers has become ill after eating
satay infected with E. Coli. They are concerned that a whole shipment of meat may have been
spoiled and decide to test several randomly selected packages of meat.
a. What should be Pak Mats null hypothesis? Explain briefly.
b. Explain in English what the type I and type II errors for this problem would be.
c. Would Pak Mat want a small (type I error) or a small (type II error), if he had to
choose one or the other? Explain.
3. The managers at PSO Chemical claim that their major product contains on average = 4.0
fluid ounces of caustic material per gallon. They further state that the distribution of caustic
material is normal with a standard deviation of = 1.3 fluid ounces. If there is too much caustic
material, the product will be dangerous. A government inspector is brought in to test the
product. She randomly selects a sample of 100, gallon-size containers of the product and finds
that their mean weight of caustic materials is = 4.5 fluid ounces per gallon.
a. What are the null and alternative hypotheses that the inspector is exploring?
b. What the type I and type II errors for this problem would be?

c. Conduct the hypothesis test using test statistics and state your conclusion (use =
0.01).
d. Find the probability of getting a sample mean, as high as or higher than 4.5 if the
production process was working as normal. Based on this probability would you be
inclined to accept or reject the null hypothesis?
e. From part (c) & (d), what conclusions would the inspector draw about the amount of
caustic material being produced?
4. A random sample of 1,562 undergraduates enrolled in engineering courses was asked to
respond on a scale from one (strongly disagree) to seven (strongly agree) to the proposition:
"EEM1026 is a fairly easy subject". The sample mean response was 4.27 and the sample
standard deviation was 1.32. Test the following hypothesis
: = 4
1 : 4
5. A manufacturer of energy bar advertises that its energy bar contains 14 g of protein. A
nutritional health agency want to test this claim because many consumers believe that the
protein level is lower. The agency finds that a random sample of 60 energy bars have mean
protein level of 13.82 g and standard deviation 1.6 g. At the 10% level, does the agency have
enough evidence to reject the manufacturers claim?
6. A student receives a brochure from university XYZ. The brochure indicates that the mean class
size is 32 students. When the student visit the classes at the university, he has a feeling that the
class sizes are more than 32. He wants to test the universitys claim, so the student randomly
selects 18 classes and checks the class size of each. The results are listed below.
44 34 29 33 35 40 26 37 29 34 30 36 38 34 27 30 28 25
At = 0.01 level, can he support the universitys claim? How about at = 0.05 level? Assume
that the population is normally distributed.

7. Matthews housemate Jim is trying to convince Matthew to get a piercing. Matthew agreed to
get the piercing if Jim can show that more than 60% of people at their university have one. Jim
samples 60 people from his mathematical engineering class and performs hypothesis testing.
His sample revealed 44 people admitted to having a piercing.
a. Based on the hypothesis testing, will Matthew end up getting a piercing?
b. Do you have any criticisms of Jims sample?

8. JPJ did a study a number of years ago, that showed that the proportion of cars tested which
failed to meet the state pollution standard was 0.37. The department would like to be able to
say that the cars have improved since then. In a recent study involving a sample of n=100 cars,
the proportion not meeting the standards was 0.28. Are the cars better at meeting the standards
than they used to be? Clearly state the null and alternative hypotheses. Perform the hypothesis
test at = 0.01, both by computing the test statistic and the p-value.
9. A company produces metal pipes of a standard length, and claims that the standard deviation
of the length is at most 1.2 cm. One of its clients decides to test this claim by taking a sample
of 25 pipes and checking their lengths. They found that the standard deviation of the sample is
1.5 cm. Does this undermine the companys claim?
a. Assume = 0.05
b. Assume = 0.01
10. The Red Cross recommends that a blood bank maintains 44% blood type O, 42% blood type
A, 10% blood type B, and 4% blood type AB. A study is conducted, and based on 400
observations, it is observed 228 for type O, 124 for type A, 40 for type B and 8 for type AB.
Is this observation consistent with the Red Cross recommendation? State your null and
alternative hypothesis clearly and perform the hypothesis testing using a 0.05 level of
significance.
