Rio de Janeiro ordained Unesco world heritage status

Rio de Janeiro, nicknamed the Marvelous City, officially


entered the UN's list of world heritage sites in recognition of
its soaring granite cliffs, urban
rainforest and beaches.
The UN cultural body,
Unesco, highlighted
the
"extraordinary
fusion" of man-made
and natural beauty in certifying Rio on the world
heritage list.
India to contribute $500,000 to UN emergency response

India has said it will
contribute $500,000 to the

response fund for the year
2016-17.
India's cumulative contribution to the fund so far has
been $6 million.
In an average year, CERF allocates approximately

India was ranked seventh in the list of countries most impacted
by terrorism in 2015, according to the Global Terrorism Index
(GTI), 2016, released by the Institute for Economics & Peace,

As many as 797 terrorist attacks were recorded in
India in 2015, up 4% since 2014, the report said.

Iraq was the worst hit by terror in 2015 with 2,415

Pakistan lifts ban on Indian cotton imports
Pakistan has lifted an "undeclared" ban on import of ginned
cotton from India, days after rejecting a consignment of 10,000
bales of cotton from India citing violation of plant quarantine
rules by importers.
Earlier, the Department of Plant Protection (DPP) of
the Ministry of National Food Security and Research
put cotton imports from India on hold through Wagah
and Karachi port from November 23, saying the
shipments did not fulfil phyto- sanitary conditions,
Dawn newspaper reported.
The rising border tensions between the two
neighbours had prompted Islamabad to impose the
ban on 10,000 bales of cotton worth USD 3.3 million
from India.
Last year, Pakistan imported ginned cotton worth
more than USD 800 million from India which
accounted for two-thirds of India's cotton exports.

According to THE, India could soon overtake Taiwan

from 16 last year, while Taiwan has 21, down from

Lucky Grahak Yojana (Consumers) is for the
consumers who will conduct daily transaction using
electronic medium.
Digi-Dhan Vyapar Yojana (Merchants) is applicable
for those merchants who make digital transaction at
merchant establishments.
e-Tourist visa extended to citizens of 161 countries
The
government
has
extended the facility of eTourist Visa for citizens of
161 countries, Rajya Sabha
was informed.
The e-visa scheme
was launched on November 27, 2014.
Under the scheme, an applicant receives an email
authorising him or her to travel to India after it has
been approved. The tourist can travel with a print-out
of this authorisation.

Government announces new income declaration scheme
'PM Garib Kalyan Yojana'
Offering one last chance to black money holders, the
government has said that they have time until 31st March 2017
to come clean by paying 50 per cent tax of the unaccounted
money under the Pradhan Madntri Garib Kalyan Yojana.
Government will use this money from penalty under
this scheme for social schemes.
This scheme starts from Dec 17 and declarations
made under this scheme will be kept confidential. Any
individual who has undisclosed income can disclose
income under this scheme till March 31 2017.
Any individual who declares unaccounted income,
will have to pay a fine of 50% of the unaccounted
money.
25% of the amount will remain locked in for 4 years.
Disabled persons to get 4% reservation
Disabled persons will now get 4 percent reservation in
government jobs and educational institutions.
Rajya Sabha has passed the Disabled Persons rights
bill 2014 Unanimously to empower disabled persons.

Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) handed a contract to
Larsen & Turbo (L&T) to make Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium

Govt approves inclusion of 15 new castes in Central


OBC list
The government approved inclusion of 15 new castes and
modification in 13 other castes in the Central list of Other
Backward Classes (OBCs).
The National Commission of Backward Classes
(NCBC) had recommended a total of 28 changes in
respect of 8 states Assam, Bihar, Himachal
Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh,
Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand.
Out of these 28, 15 were new entries, 9 were
synonyms or sub-castes of the castes which were
already in the list and 4 were corrections.

Pariyojna in Uttarakhands
Dehradun.
The Chardham Mahamarg Vikas Pariyojna, or the
Chardham highway development project, is an
ambitious initiative to improve connectivity to the
Char Dham pilgrimage centres in the Himalayas.
The projects main objective is to develop around 900
km of national highways. These highways will be
built in Uttarakhand at an approximate cost of Rs
12,000 crore.
Swachh Swasth Sarvatra initiative launched
Swachh Swasth Sarvatra, an inter-ministerial joint initiative
between the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and the
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was launched in New
Delhi.
Another joint initiative, Swasth Bacche Swasth
Bharat, between Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare and the Ministry of Human Resource
Development was also launched on the occasion.
Under this initiative:
Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has
declared over 700 blocks as Open Defecation Free
(ODF).
Community Health Centres (CHCs) in ODF blocks of
the country will be allocated Rs 10 lakhs under
National Health Mission (NHM) to focus on
sanitation and hygiene.
Under Kayakalp, one Primary Health Centre (PHCs)
in each district is awarded for meeting quality
standards including sanitation and hygiene.
Government Suspends Deemed Recognition of IOA
Government has suspended the deemed recognition, granted by
it to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) until the IOA
reverses its decision to appoint Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay
Chautala as Life Presidents.
Following the suspension, IOA will cease to enjoy the
privileges and prerogatives bestowed on it by the
Government as the National Olympic Committee
(NOC).

demographic (name, gender, age, photograph and

Nitish government announces 50 % reservation in judicial
services
The Bihar Cabinet has declared 50 per cent reservation in all
judicial services for aspirants belonging to the Extremely
Backward Classes, Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes
and Scheduled Tribes.
The reservation will be in both Superior Judicial
Services and Subordinate Judicial Services.
According to the Cabinet decision, aspirants
belonging to EBCs will get 21 per cent reservation,
OBCs will have 12 per cent reservations, Scheduled
Castes will have 16 per cent reservation and
Scheduled Tribes will be provided 1 per cent
reservation in all judicial services of the State.
In all categories, there will be 35 per cent horizontal
reservation for women and 1 per cent reservation for
disabled persons.

The MDR for debit card payments, including for
payments made to government, will be capped at
0.25% for transactions up to Rs1,000 and 0.5%
between Rs1,000-2,000, RBI said in a notification.

Germany's Deutsche Bank was penalised the highest
Rs 20,000 while US' Bank of America-Merrill Lynch,
UK's Royal Bank of Scotland, Japan's Bank of Tokyo
Mitsubishi and UK's Standard Chartered were asked
to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 each.

terminals per village
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development
(NABARD) is going to support banks for deployment of two
PoS (Point of Sales) devices per village in one lakh villages
having a population of upto 10,000 in an effort to facilitate

The effort is going to cost NABARD an estimated Rs
120 crore.
Further, NABARD will now support procurement of
EMV chip and PIN-based RuPay Kisan Cards by both

The government today appointed vice chief of army staff Lt
Gen Bipin Rawat as the new Army chief superseding his two
senior officers, while vice chief of air staff Air Marshal B S
Dhanoa has been made the new chief of the Indian Air Force.
Rawat will replace General Dalbir Singh, while
Dhanoa will take over from IAF chief Arup Raha.

Kolkata bags best cities award for tackling climate change
Kolkata, along with 10 other cities from across the globe, has
been honoured with the best cities of 2016 award in recognition
of its inspiring and innovative programme with regard to solid
waste management.
Kolkata is the only Indian city to receive the
prestigious award.
It received the award during the C40 Mayors Summit
held in Mexico City.
Other cities that won the award are Addis Adaba,
Copenhagen, Curitiba, Sydney and Malborne, Paris,
Portland, Seoul Shenzhen, and Yokohama.
Srinidhi Shetty wins Miss Supranational
Mangaluru girl Srinidhi Shetty was crowned Miss
Supranational 2016 at a grand ceremony in Krynica Zdroj,
Poland. She also won the title of Miss Asia-Oceania.

Award
Eminent modern Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh has been chosen
for the prestigious 52nd Jnanpith Award for 2016, the literary
organisation has announced.
Instituted in 1961, the award by Bharatiya Jnanpith
recognises Indian literatteurs who write in one of the
22 Indian languages listed in Schedule Eight of the
Indian Constitution.

Sunny Leone to receive PETA's person of the year award


Actress Sunny Leone will receive PETA's person of the year
award for her dedication to promoting the rescue of homeless

and killed for their skin.

campaign by the organization which encouraged
people to "be an angel" and adopt a homeless dog.

The prize includes cash of Rs 2 lakhs, besides a

Last year, writer Bhagwati Lal Vyas received this
award for his Rajasthani poetry collection titled,

Bharatiya Jananpith announces Navlekhan award 2016
Two new Hindi writers Shraddha and Ghyansham Kumar
Devansh have been chosen for Bharatiya Jnanpith 12th
Navlekhan Award for the year 2016, the literary organisation
announced.
The decision to confer the award on Shraddha for her
short story, 'Hawa Mein Phadphadati Chitthi' and on
Devansh for his poem 'Akash Mein Deh' was taken
unanimously by a selection panel chaired by eminent
poet Vishnu Nagar.
The award, that is given to young authors in Hindi for
their first creations, consists of a statue of Goddess
Saraswati, a citation and a cash prize each, besides
Jnanpith publishing their works.
