According to my research, the role of an Operations Manager is vital in business,
government and other organizations. The precise tasks of an operations manager depend in
large part upon the nature and size of the enterprise, but he/she needs a wide range of
business and interpersonal skills to succeed. In general, an operations manager plans,
oversees and smooths communication between the other departments of the business in
order to execute its functions properly and efficiently.
Operations managers play a leading role in managing both raw materials and
personnel. Oversight of inventory, purchasing and supplies is central to the job. Human
resources tasks include determining needs, hiring employees, overseeing assignment of
employees and planning staff development.
Operations managers play a key role in budgeting, controlling costs and keeping the
organization on track financially. Their management of the supply chain and other resources
helps minimize costs of production. They study business forecasts, sales reports and
financial statements to find ways to maximize results. They use methods such as costbenefit analysis to improve efficiency. Modern operations management even includes
sustainability in the financial equation.
Operations managers set goals and objectives and establish policies for various
departments in the organization. For example, operations manager duties include sales
forecasting and planning of sales promotions. In cooperation with other managers, they help
establish procedures and put them into effect.
Operations managers need good communication and interpersonal skills to help the
different parts of an organization work together. Their job includes creating a positive culture
where the work can get done. They facilitate communication between employees and
departments. At times, operation managers help resolve disputes or disagreements.
Operations managers cooperate in high-level decision making with other top executives of
an organization, such as the president, chief financial officer and chief executive.
In comparison to my job in the government sector, I have not much in common with
the different aforementioned functions of an Operations Manager. My job as a Revenue
Seizure Agent for the Bureau of Internal Revenue involves the preparation and issuance
approved preliminary and final collection letters; locating registered and/or actual present
address of the delinquent taxpayer; service of the collection letters to the taxpayer
concerned; regular communication with the taxpayer, to persuade the taxpayer to
immediately settle the tax liability, and inform him/her/its representative of the basis of the
assessments, the civil and criminal liability of the taxpayer, as well as the summary of
remedies that may be enforced by the Bureau, in case of failure to pay the delinquent
accounts, and the available administrative remedies in settling the same, etc.; preparation

and issuance of Warrants of Distraint and/or Levy and Warrants of Garnishment; issuance of
access letters to gather pertinent taxpayer information and properties; garnishment and
seizure of assets for liquidation and/or auction.
It is quite far from the functions and responsibilities of an Operations Manager.
However, the execution of our job requires me to have good communication and negotiation
skills just like an Operations Manager. It also requires me to monitor my tax docket inventory
before the tax case prescribes, and it also requires me to maintain and build good
relationships with different government offices.
In conclusion, all jobs have a certain quality on them that would require a person to
think and act like an Operations Manager in order for them to do their jobs well and
efficiently.
