These high interest stories come from a collection compiled by Burton Goodman,
called 5 Star Stories. Each story includes comprehension, vocabulary and story
structure questions. There are 10 sets of leveled collections, 1 st-10th grade, and most
grades have two volumes. I have only included the first volumes of levels C-J. The
publisher is Jamestown Education and books are available on Amazon for around $10
each. Each volume includes about 15 stories. I have indexed the stories according to
the relevant 6th grade theme wherever possible. In my class I photocopied the stories
and made an answer sheet for the questions, so they were easy to use and grade. (I
have the masters for the answer sheets if anyone is interested.) I used the lower
grade level stories for my struggling readers in skill based groups and the higher
grade level stories for my advanced readers. I LOVE THE STORIES IN THE 6TH AND 7TH
GRADE COLLECTIONS. They specifically target inferencing skills, since most of them
contain unexpected endings. Some of the stories could be used in more than one
unit, and some of them dont match any unit very well. But they are a good and
inexpensive resource.
