Correcting the Magnetic Compass

* Syncronize the watch to the GPS


* The vessel to be run at a suitable slow speed
* Make ready two radios (do not use the radio close to the Magnetic Compass!)
* Variation is found to be
-2.5
* If possible the Sun's bearing should be taken or if not to be compared with the Gyro Compass
* Tools to prepare:

- Large screwdriver
- 12" adjustable wrench for the balls
- Bearing diopter for the Magnetic Compass (if the Sun to be used for swinging)
* Position to be noted at the beginning and end of the swinging - to decide the Sun's true bearing

(MAGNETIC COURSE = TRUE COURSE +/- VARIATION)

Correction step-by-step

Action

1)

Steer magnetic course 090

Neutralize the deviation (DV = 0) by moving the LONGSHIPS MAGNETS

2)

Steer magnetic course 180

Neutralize the deviation (DV =0) by moving the TWARTHSHIPS MAGNETS

3)

Steer magnetic course 270

The deviation is halved by moving the LONGSHIPS MAGNETS

4)

Steer magnetic course 000

The deviation is halved by moving the TWARTHSHIPS MAGNETS

5)

Steer magnetic course 045

Neutralize the deviation (DV = 0) by moving the BALLS

6)

Steer magnetic course 135

The deviation is halved by moving the BALLS

7)

The compass correction has now finished

8)

Now the swinging is made by 10 intervals -

or by deciding the DV on the 8 main- & semi-main courses,


plotting the figures into the "Swinging Table"
