Evaluation 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop

or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Music video:
The first shot in the music video is an establishing shot which we decided
on as a group as it sets the location. Then throughout the video the rest of
the shots are of an urban setting so this initial shot sets the scene for the
whole video.
For our scenes of some band members walking we used an interview of
the Gallagher brothers walking in 1994 as it effectively showed the band
members. We decided to develop this and use It effectively as a
disjuncture from the music video which follows Goodwins theory and
balances out with the performance shots throughout the music video. The
frontman of Oasis, Liam Gallagher, has a certain personality which he
portrays whilst performing. We used this convention as it would suit our
audience with one of our band members Jack using the Liam Gallagher
'stance'. This being holding hands behind your back and leaning into the
microphone when singing. Music videos are usually dependent on the
performance of the band to make the video, therefore we used shots
similar to Oasis in

'Cigarettes and Alcohol'.

In our video, we concentrated on styling of the band and the location. We

wanted to wear similar clothing, to the generic indie rock bands such as
brands like Lyle & Scott, Ralph Lauren and Burberry. These brands are
suited to bands such as the Stone Roses, Blur and Oasis. We showed this

through filming the whole video wearing jackets of designer brands. We

have developed on this idea as we decided to wear brands that are more
associated with today's era, rather than brands worn typically by the
Stone Roses etc. This style is seen in most videos of our inspirational
bands as they keep their own style as a way for people to distinguish and
recognise the band without an introduction.
We used this idea as our band would
complement other indie rock bands,
continuing the general 'theme' for the indie
rock genre. The use of these brands allow
audience to recognise us as an indie rock
band but also it allows us to be unique as we
have given a fresh look to indie rock because
of the modern day fashion we have used.
Our filming location(s) consisted of in and
around Leicester City centre, and a skittle alley alongside a pub. We
decided to use this location as it corresponded with the colour scheme we
adopted for our video. As the video to 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' by Oasis is
filmed in a rundown looking building. This is something we tried to create
as we feel it represented the lower class feel that the band has, also the
fact that we chose this location over a more professional location is that
the band is signed with a large record label, the need for an identity from
the label would be extremely important. Also in the same song, there is a
heavy reliance on drums which was very similar to the song we
performed. We matched this with the cuts as this also happened in
Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis. We used the black and white colour
scheme throughout all of our video until the ending shot, where the only
coloured part of the video became the smoke of a smoke bomb. We used
this convention from Oasis' music video, Live Forever. Most of our shots in
our video are mid shots, with some close ups and tracking shots. These
tracking shots were used as filler shots to use between shots of
performance. We took inspiration from a 1994 interview of Oasis in Paris,
about their new album at the time Definitely Maybe. The interview takes
place in Paris and sees the band members walking across a city road. We
used this convention in our music video as we wanted to carry the
appearance of bands such as Oasis. The shots were used after the
performance shots, developed from the Oasis video. We also took Roland
Barthes narrative codes into account, we used a symbolic code in our
video, where we used black and white throughout the whole video. We
developed an idea from film that colour is a measure of happiness. To
follow the symbolic code, we had contrasting colour schemes of black and
white and a stand out colour, which allowed our characters able to
develop the personality of an indie rock band.

During the performance shots, we decided to have a sheet which

developed a convention of real media products. This is a backdrop
containing the bands name. Usually, in performance videos bands do not
have these, although if they do they are large sheets with a graphics on
them which are very expensive. As we did not have a large budget, we
had to improvise and spray paint onto a white sheet. We feel we are
developing a common convention in this situation as we are including a
feature that is only familiar with bands that actually play live music, which
we do not but still used this convention as it gave a live and real feel to
the video.
Digipak:
For my digipak I drew my main inspiration
from the Stone Roses album and bands like
the Kills and
Arctic

Monkeys. I wanted to use the Stone Roses album as a template for my

text as it has large black bold lettering that stands out so I wanted to
develop this for all text located on the front of my digipak. For the design I
used the Kills album as it is well known but has a simplistic design which
was easy to use and make my digipak front work well but not make it too
cluttered with text/images. Also this album has one large image in the
centre with a large white border, I used this as it is a very effective design.
I also took inspiration from Imagine Dragons Night visions album as it
has large bold lettering at the top of the digipak front which allows it to
stand out, I developed this as I just changed the colour of my font.

I also had to include the common digipak conventions such as barcode,

record label, catalogue number etc. as these need to be included to
replicate the albums that are currently on the market so my album can
compete.

Magazine advert:
Oasis have had a big influence throughout my magazine advert, digipak
and music video as we wanted to use them as a heavy influence for our
work. I wanted to keep the same colour scheme throughout as we wanted
to fit into the indie rock genre, similar to work by the Arctic Monkeys,
Catfish and the Bottlemen and Oasis. The Balcony by Catfish and the
Bottlemen had a very similar magazine advert to their digipak so I wanted
to use this and do the same because it suits our style and fits in with the
indie rock genre.
