The President-Elect of the United States

Dear President-Elect Donald Trump,
Illegal immigration is an issue that has been going on for decades and has impacted the way we
live. An illegal immigrant is when anyone who is coming or staying in a country are not legally
allowed to stay in. Illegal immigration has impacted our education, jobs, taxes, and population.
The controversy over this topic is deciding if this impact is helping or hurting us. In most cases
illegal immigration has hurt us, taking away jobs and scholarships. Also illegal immigration isnt
just hurting those who live in the U.S., but those trying to come in. By allowing an illegal
immigrant in it makes it harder for someone trying to get in legally to get into the U.S.. Illegal
immigration is clearly an issue and the only question is, what are we going to do about it?
Illegal Immigration is an important issue because it affects so many people in our country. Many
people are coming into the U.S. without permission. Illegal immigrants take jobs away from
American citizens. (Snyder) This is a major problem with illegal immigration that affects so
many. Illegal immigrants are coming into our country and are often welcomed by U.S.
employers who are able to hire them for wages lower than they would have to pay to hire U.S.
workers (Passel, Cohn, Krogstad) This is unfair for U.S. citizens who live there legally and
have their jobs taken away by illegal immigrants. Another issue that makes illegal immigration
so important is that they have no problem in receiving tens of billions of dollars worth of free
education benefits, free health care benefits (Snyder) and even more benefits . Illegal
immigrants are coming into our country taking peoples jobs and then taking benefits from
people who truly deserve them. This is such an important issue because illegal immigrants are
causing problems that are unfair to Americans and it needs to be addressed.
Today in the United States of America, immigration has a huge impact on our nation. Millions of
illegal immigrants have poured into the United States over the past few decades, and hundreds of
thousands continue to join them each year. The United States Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) has estimated that 11.4 million unauthorized immigrants lived in the United States in
January 2012. (Quote from Department of Homeland Security). These millions of illegal

immigrants hurt us in many ways, but especially our economy. One of the biggest concerns is
how illegal immigrants are stealing jobs that could be given to Americans, and citizens of
America should come first, not last. One recent estimate by researchers at the Pew Hispanic
Center puts the number of illegal aliens in the workforce at 8 million out of an overall population
of 11.2 million illegal aliens, i.e., 71.4 percent. (Passel, Jeffrey S. and D'Vera Cohn, Pew
Hispanic Center) This means that about 8 million illegals are stealing jobs from us Americans. 8
million jobs that could help an American family go to bed full, go to sleep in a safe place, but
instead that money is going to non-tax paying illegals who dont benefit our country in any way.
Not only is the present important, but the future is a vital part to think about as well. Scientists
believe that many immigrants will make up our population and workforce in the future. In fact,
through 2050, immigrants and their children will account for 60 percent of U.S. population
growth, and nearly all of the new additions under the age of 65 will be immigrants. (Solis, Hilda
L.) When we look at illegal immigration we need to be looking at the past, the present, and the
future, so we can be proud our of nation and let us be suitable for our children.
The public has many different opinions on illegal immigration. One article said In a June 2010
poll, 39% said immigrants strengthened the country while 50% said they were a burden.
(Clark). Some people would like illegal immigrants to stay in our country because they think
they contribute to our society or immigration is good for the economy (Krayewski). Other
people think that they are a burden because they take jobs, healthcare and housing (Clark). A
survey states a solid majority (72%) of Americans say undocumented immigrants currently
living in the U.S. should be allowed to stay (Goo). According to that article most people thought
that illegal immigrants should stay in the U.S. even though most people thought they affected the
society negatively. The information varies from year to year and depending on how you feel
about the situation. Overall depending on your view on immigrants contributes to whether or not
you would like illegal immigrants to stay in the country or if you think they are a burden to our
society. No matter what your opinion may be on the issue, something still needs to be done.
There are several ways that the president could solve this issue. One way the president could
help eliminate illegal immigration, is by building a wall or fence. In areas where there is little
protection for stopping illegal immigration a fence would [slow] the intruders and [make] them
visible to members of the border patrol(Shmuel Rosner). However, a fence would not be
enough to stop immigration. We would also have to increase border security. If the number of
National Guards that patrolled the border was increased it would help stop illegal immigration.
According to some experts, a deployment of 15,000 National Guard troops would secure the
border. And there are hundreds of thousands of National Guard troops available for such
duty(Ben Shapiro). If there are people available for this duty then we should use them. By
upping our border security we would have the National Guard arrest those who crossed the
border leading to their deportation. Deportation is another key factor needed to stop illegal
immigration. Allowing those who are here illegally to stay wont solve the problem of increased

taxes and lower jobs. We need to deport those who are here illegally, but dont have to do it in a
mass deportation. While some think it is almost impossible to track down illegal immigrants the
idea that there should be a significant price to pay for an employer that exploits people and
encourages people to enter the country illegally(Judd Gregg). This idea, that a fee would be put
on employers that hired illegal immigrants, would cause businesses to turn away illegal
immigrants. This would then cause less to come and more to be turned in if they weren't being
offered jobs anymore. Using all these steps will help stop illegal immigration in our country.
Illegal immigration has been happening for a long time in our country, and has yet to be
completely solved. There are many ways that we can solve this including building a wall or fence
and having better border protection. When it comes to immigration, we must begin to think about
what has happened in the past, what is happening now, and what could happen in the near future.
Right now, illegals are a large part of minority groups and that needs to be fixed. They are taking
our jobs that Americans could have, and they are costing the U.S. economy billions of dollars
each year. We hope the U.S. can soon solve its immigration issue and that we take precautions to
stop illegals from getting into the U.S. When you are President, Mr. Trump, we think that in this
case, Good fences make good neighbors.

Sincerely,
Claudia Clayton
