Introduction
The Ministry of Education has conducted an uninterrupted series of annual school censuses for the last 50
years and this has become the major data source of education data in the country. Much information has
been collected from government schools about students, teachers, non-academic staff and the physical
facilities available in the schools. Simultaneous to the annual school census of government schools, separate
censuses are carried out to collect information from Private Schools, Pirivenas, Teacher Training Colleges and
National Colleges of Education. The collected information has been processed and made available annually
to the researchers, policy makers and the planners for their researches, planning and development work. This
report is a step in the process of making the information available to such planners and the other data users.
The first part of this report presents the preliminary findings of the School Census 2016, which was carried
out as 1st June 2016. Information about the schools, Students and teachers in government schools are used
in the preparation of this part. Information related to Private Schools, Pirivenas, Teacher Training Colleges
and National Colleges of Education are also included in this section. Provincial and district leve l information
which are widely used by the data uses has been prepared.
