COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces to students the basic measurement and reporting concepts underlying the
accounting system for communicating financial information to users external to the organization. Topics
include information processing, preparation of financial statements, the role of ethics in accounting
decisions, analysis of financial data, and valuation and reporting issues for assets, liabilities, stockholders
equity, revenues, and expenses.
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE TO LEARN:

The nature and purpose of accounting for business, government, non-profit organizations
and society in general, with emphasis on the various business entities.

The use, analysis, and interpretation of financial information in reports prepared for users
external to the business enterprise (i.e., owners, sponsors, creditors, government and the investor).

The concepts and standards underlying the measurements used in accounting to develop the
financial statements of businesses.

Accounting methods and their use as an orderly means of recording, classifying, and
presenting useful information from a mass of data derived from transactions and events affecting the
enterprise.

The basic language of business as represented by business and accounting terminology.

The role and impact of ethical accounting and reporting in economic decision-making.

Written communication and teamwork skills in an accounting context.

OFFICE HOURS
I will have regularly scheduled office hours for consultation on matters pertaining to the course. Students
are encouraged to take advantage of these hours to discuss their problems and to secure assistance when
needed throughout the quarter. It is expected that you will have done the readings, and completed
homework assignments before asking for assistance.
DROPPING THE COURSE
Students must go through the official procedures to drop the course and check on a regular basis to verify
the course has been dropped. A student who stops attending the class and fails to officially drop will
receive a grade of WU.
PLAGIARISM/ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
The School of Business expects the highest level of ethical behavior from its students, both in the
classroom and in their future careers. Therefore, students should be familiar with the Standards of
Academic Conduct (including Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty), described in the Student Handbook,
as these policies will be strictly enforced by the School of Business.
EXAM POLICY
There will be 2 midterm exams in this course, plus a comprehensive final exam. Dates for these exams
are listed on the attached Assignment Schedule. Each student is responsible for managing his/her own
personal schedule to be present at the exams. Students pictured ID will be checked at the time of the
exam. No computers, cell phones or Blackberries are allowed during the tests. Students should bring
Scantron Form 882 E along with a calculator to the exam. All exams must be done in pencil and must be
neat.
I will not allow make-up exam for any reason. Students who do not attend exams at scheduled time
will receive 0 for the grade. No exception will be allowed for this policy.
