BILLBOARD
This advertisement incorporates one aspect of the United
States Declaration of Independence to instill a sense of
pride and freedom in the message portrayed. A Sans Serif
font is integrated, appealing to the common audience, and
the rule of thirds is used as well, drawing an invisible
pound sign along the billboard. The contrast between the
orange background and white lettering serves to highlight
the phrase incorporated to advertise the product, as well as
the label of Vitamin Water. Orange also serves to draw
attention, as incorporated in the majority of the billboard.
The color also emphasizes the color of the Vitamin Water
and appeals (according to the psychology of orange) to the
enthusiasm, warmth, and excitement of the audience.

BOOK COVER
This book cover illustrates the powerful pathos appeal of obtaining freedom,
which has been a human instinct and goal throughout all history. The design,
very simple, draws attention to the chain being broken and split into many
pieces. Attention is also drawn to the title of the book using the color, which
is seldom used in the whole of the design, and the font, which appears in all
capital letters and contrasts between the blue lettering and the white
background. The rule of thirds, incorporated in a small part of the cover,
brings attention once again to the chain being broken, as the chain runs along
the top line of the imaginary pound sign. The reason for this may be that the
author wanted to communicate the intent of the book through a powerful
visual, speaking to the human instinct of breaking free from our bonds.

MAGAZINE COVER
This visual exhibits an excellent visual for the message being
displayed in a moving picture of a boy strapped to a chalkboard with
duct tape; his mouth taped shut; and homework, a calculator, and
pencils taped to the chalkboard beside him. The illustrator and author
wanted to communicate the message that children arent reaching
their full potential in the current American public education system,
and the situation needs to change. The illustrator pulls the attention
of the audience to the boy in the middle of the magazine using a
bright red shirt and intensely colored tape amongst a drab tan
background. The words Freedom and Held Back also capture attention
because of the rule of thirds and fonts used. This message does have
bias, assuming that the American public education has problems, and
that they can be fixed. However, the argument that the illustrator and
author makes is very well portrayed.

PURCHASED PRODUCT
This advertisement for Kindle Unlimited illustrates
the endless options available and the freedom to
explore those options by using little ships containing
distinct book titles sailing among many book pages.
The illustrator used recognizable book covers to
create connections in the audiences minds. The
colors draw attention to the many book ships as well
as to the word Kindle using a contrasting yellow to
the black Unlimited. The rule of thirds is used in
drawing an imaginary pound sign and resting the
title of the product on the line as well as placing
ships along the lines and where they intersect.
Figure-ground draws attention to the ships by using
darker ships to the lightly colored and illuminated
books and background. The illustrator communicates
very well the message they wanted to convey.

Vintage Advertisement
In this vintage advertisement, a woman pilot standing in front of a
plane holds a bottle of Coca-Cola, smiling off into the distance.
The familiar logo of Coca-Cola appears to her left while, to her
right, the phrase Your thirst takes wings appears in yellow. The
woman herself pulls the attention to her because of
Figure-Ground: she is light while the background is a darker color.
Also brought in the spotlight, the phrase to her right is a bright
yellow, bringing happiness and optimism. The Coca-Cola logo is a
bright red, the color associated with love, passion, and longing.
The pilot brings ethos, as being a woman pilot when this
advertisement was created was a feat. The advertisement also
appeals to pathos because of the human desire for freedom.

PHOTO THAT MAKES AN ARGUMENT

In this photo stands Isra Ali Saalad. She moved from Somalia to
Sweden with her mother and siblings. This photo addresses the
plea of refugees and attests that they need the help of others in
their plight. The little girl, in a pink coat and pink shoes, along
with her pink stroller and baby doll, stands amidst a dark
background. There is space around her, giving the impression of
loneliness and helplessness. She also occupies the center of the
photograph, bringing attention to her and only her. The line
across the bottom uses the rule of thirds to keep your attention
above the line. The photographers intent was to portray this
little girl as a hopeless little girl, but one that is just like others
her age. This photograph powerfully portrays this intent and
urges the viewers to provide aid and help.

ETHOS
This visual uses ethos by depicting a swimmer emerging from a wall of
water as Gandhi, perhaps implying that if you swim you will become like
Gandhi. The detail in the picture is very intricate, depicting every drop
and ripple of water on the swimmers back, the light on the swimmers
skin as it shines through the water, the curves of Gandhi's face. The viewer
can see the motion of the water as it falls down and around the head. The
rule of thirds is used as the head is in the middle of the imaginary pound
sign. In the bottom right hand corner lies a white statement that stands
out against the dark background that says Swimming Makes You Feel
Good in all capital letters. Also standing out against the dark background
is a white logo right next to it for a swimming organization. This picture,
very interesting, communicates its message very well and requires the
viewer to take a second look.

PATHOS
This photograph depicts a refugee family suffering the
destruction of ISIS in Ramadi. A striking feature of the
photograph portrays a boy with no arms sitting on the
left opening a destroyed piece of a building, with two
brothers sitting on the right side, one brother reaching
out to the lone brother with no arms. Destroyed building
behind them lay decimated, destruction evident, yet still
a smile remains on the face of the boy with no arms.
Perhaps the photographers intent was to portray a
surviving family in the wake of destruction left in ISISs
path. Perhaps the photographer tried to capture hope in
the boys face despite the destruction. Whatever the
intent of the photographer, hope is seen and
communicated to the audience amidst tribulation.

LOGOS
This anti-smoking advertisement uses logos to communicate
the danger of smoking. The smoke from the cigarette creates a
gun pointed directly at the head of the smoker. The rule of
thirds is used, placing the boys eyes in one corner of the
imaginary pound sign, the gun in the other corner.
Figure-Ground is used to highlight the boys face and the gun
in stark contrast between the background. This picture
powerfully depicts the danger of smoking by inferring that
smoking provides as much a danger to users as shooting
themselves.

POLITICAL CARTOON
This political cartoon illustrates an aspect of the presidential
campaigns of 2016 between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump by
showing Trump being searched and scanned by the Media and
Hillary Clinton walking past without a security check. This political
cartoon observes a very biased opinion, but it was a very present
debate during the presidential elections. The illustration depicts the
debate of Clinton getting away with deleting classified emails that
she wasnt supposed to have in the first place as well as the media
digging up any dirt they could get on Trump. The illustrators intent
was to bring these debates to life in a comedic cartoon, and to
persuade others to their opinion. This political cartoon depicts very
well this side of the political argument between Trump and Clinton,
but again, depicts a very biased side of the debate.

HOLIDAY ADVERTISEMENT FOR

TARGET AUDIENCE
This holiday advertisement by McDonalds targets both those
who celebrate Christmas and those who celebrate Hanukkah by
creating a christmas tree out of french fries and a menorah out
of french fries. The illustrators use figure-ground by using
bright yellow french fries against darker backgrounds. They also
use the colors red and yellow which psychologically create the
feeling of hunger in viewers. The creators were intending to
create advertisements applicable to all viewers and to create
longing for the product in all viewers.

UNIVERSITY WEBSITE
The Johns Hopkins University website expertly uses color and
abstract images to attract the attention of viewers. The designers
used good organization to be both visually appealing and easy for
users to navigate through the website. The color contrast
between the picture in the main screen and the blue for the
bottom of the page draws attention to the picture, and the
contrast between the Johns Hopkins University title and the
black background draws attention to the university name. The
same concept is used in the categories across the top. The
designers were trying to draw the attention of users and make
their site memorable above other university websites.

COMPANY LOGO
The Dodge company logo uses a ram to appeal to men and the necessity
of men to establish manliness. The detail of the ram also appeals to this
psychological need of men. Red, psychologically, means passion, love,
danger, and willpower, all of which are attributes that men value. The
font also communicates manliness with all capital big, bold letters. The
outline of the ram resembles the shape of a shield, unconsciously
appealing as well to the sense of manliness that men strive to possess.
The Dodge logo does well in appealing to men and to certain
personalities that would be interested in the products that Dodge
provides.

BALANCE
This striking photograph uses balance, or symmetry, across the horizontal
line to reflect the image above in the water almost perfectly. The shades of
color reflect across the top and the bottom, the photograph capturing even
the intricate details of the branches, the trees, and the animals. The
contrast of the black outlines of the shapes to the sunset in the
background create a profound calmness in the photograph. The rule of
thirds is used in the top of the photograph with the tree, the elephant, and
the line across the bottom, visually appealing to the viewer. The color,
beautiful and alluring, starts as an almost tangible red and fades into a
transcendent pink. The author intended to create a peaceful and
magnificent view of the nature in Africa and succeeded in doing so.

CONTRAST
In this noteworthy photograph, a girl in the water gazes into the camera
with a monkey on her head, her dry, unkempt hair giving the impression
of youthfulness yet her face showing the image of tremendous experience.
The contrast between her dark skin, dark hair, and dark monkey and the
green background centers the viewers attention on the girl and the
monkey. Further, the contrast between her lighter face and her darker hair
pulls the viewers attention toward her face, analyzing the wisdom in her
gaze. The photographer surely caught an extraordinary moment in the
expression and situation of this photograph. Perhaps the photographer
wanted to convey the poverty of these third world countries, the lack of
resources, the hard times that follow them, capturing all these ideas in the
single expression of the girls eyes.

POINT OF VIEW
The unique perspective of this photograph serves to astound the viewer
into another look and provoke thought and reflection. By looking from
above, the photographer paints a unique viewpoint to the natural
world, using contrasting colors to bring attention to the towering tree
and the primate climbing the colossus. The primate and tree are also
slightly off center to create the lines that psychologically draw
attention. The details of the trees and the towering tree also add an
element of depth to the quality of this photograph. The photographer,
trying to capture an amazing piece of nature, transcends expectations
in an extraordinary photograph capturing a considerable moment in
time.
