An inspirational 28 year old former RAF officer and father of two sadly passed
away on Wednesday 21st December 2016. Shahbaz Saleem from Reedley,
spent the last year of his life at Pendleside Hospice receiving care after being
diagnosed with bowel cancer. He was admitted to the hospice in November
2015 after the cancer proved inoperable. During the last year of life, Shahbaz
Saleem raised over 17,000 for Pendleside Hospice as a thank you and
appreciation for the amazing support and care he received from the hospice.
A family spokesman said: He was very brave to the end. Our beloved brother
was a true inspiration not just for the community but evidently the whole
world. His only wish in his
later stages was nobody

sickbed. Shahbaz served in Afghanistan and Libya

after joining the RAF as a teenager and organised several interfaith events to break down barriers between communities and misconceptions about the armed forces. Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, who
presented Shahbaz Saleem with a letter of thanks
from Prime Minister Theresa May, said: Shabz was a
role model for young people and everybody in the
area. I was pleased to spend time with him and present him with a letter of commendation from the
Prime Minister, not just for his service in the RAF
but in raising so much money for charity from his
hospice bed. His life touched the hearts of so many
and his legacy is one of inspiration & achievement.
Pendle Council leader Councillor Mohammad Iqbal
has known the Saleem family for 20 years. He said:
Shabz leaves an inspirational legacy for his family and
the people in the area. He was a true example to
others. The Pendle Community Radio team offers
its sincere condolences to the Saleem family.

First of all a very Happy New Year. As 2017 starts we will be thinking
where the whole of last year just disappeared to and many will be thinking about how fast it flew by. As we enter 2017 there will be many of you
who will have decided to do something different this year and make a
resolution. It is common that people do make them however they only
keep going and stick to them for the first couple of days or weeks but as
the days and weeks go by the resolution tends to come to a halt.
Last year I made a few resolutions myself however due to lack of willingness I only managed to achieve a few goals. One of them was based on
improving my health. I enjoy my junk food and I decided that in 2016 I
cut down on my junk intake. So in order to try and fulfil that resolution I
Faz Patel MBE; Volunteer at

decided to seek help and advice. I managed to get a personal health

Pendle Radio.

trainer and after a couple of weeks of planning, consultations, setting tar-

gets and goals and changing eating habits, I managed to make a big difference to my health. The targets
were small but they made a big impact to my life. I successfully managed to make a lifestyle change
through this heath trainer service provided by my local council. These types of goals are not easy to
achieve. You do need confidence and the will power and some support and motivation from family
and friends. Whatever new things you feel you want to do in life, or if you feel you want to start
afresh then it is never too late. Anything is possible. You just need to focus, seek relevant advice from
the right people and you can achieve your goals and ambitions.
I learn a lot in everyday life through experience and I would like to pass these things to the readers
too. I remember a close friend and colleague of mine who had a terminal illness and was told that he
would only live for around 5 more months; however, because of his willingness and will power he
stayed another few years. Unfortunately he died last year but what I learnt from him was that you
have to be optimistic about everything. He always did something or the other rather than just sitting
at home doing nothing and getting more ill. He stayed in touch with friends and continued with voluntary work and enjoyed his time till the end. He personally told me that these sorts of things actually
helped him and I think that time flies too fast and we will not be able to get this time back so its best
to make the most of it. I know everyone is busy whether you are working or not, everyone has something to do however as the year starts, spend some quality time with loved ones, grandparents, parents, family members and make a resolution on taking some time off for friends and family and loved
ones. These are the things that we wont regret because when people die and loved ones are lost,
thats when you wish that you could go back in time.
For those who have illnesses, have hope, cherish every moment and take each day as it comes. Those
who are healthy look after your health and do something that will make a difference both to your life
and to someone elses life. I pray that everyone has a blessed and prosperous new year.

your knowledge with the community of Pendle & beyond then
Pendle Community Radio is the place for you. A volunteering form can be completed and submitted
online via the Pendle Community Radio website at www.pendleradio.org which will then be seen

Rabia Aziz has been a presenter on the radio for many years. As well as presenting, her roles involve
taking part in radio campaigns and outdoor events. She states: When I first started as a presenter, I
had no experience whatsoever. I was given training and I felt confident that I was able to do it.
Talking about the impact it has had she said: Over the years, I have overcome my fear of going on air
and it has helped me develop my confidence and develop me as a person. From being a presenter I
have been given the opportunities to interview Justine Greening (former Secretary of State for
International Development) and James Brokenshire (former Minister of State for Immigration). I am
proud to be a presenter and serve my local community.
