Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. In Hebrew, they denote the entirety of
something. Jesus declares Himself to be the Alpha and the Omega in Revelation 22:13. He is the fulfilment of
the New Covenant initiated by God. Jesus is the promise for all things to be made new in Him (Isa 43:15-21)! The
promise that leads to an undivided heart and a new spirit (Eze 11:19) in Gods people! The promise that results in the
outpouring of Gods Spirit upon His people!
We need to rely on the Holy Spirit even more in this year of Kainos. Jesus has already begun His Kainos work in us.
He will continue to bring about much Kainos in our lives and our church as we journey through these devotions
with prayer and fasting. Lets seek Him with undivided hearts and spirits, led and empowered by the Holy Spirit to
experience the Kainos He has prepared for us!
Why pray and fast?
The word fast is derived from the Hebrew word tsom, which refers to the practice
of self-denial. In Greek, the word is nesteia, which has the same meaning.
Fasting is abstinence from food, sleep, favourite hobbies, or any desire of the
human nature for Gods purposes. It helps us to keep focus or tests us to see how
much we desire to see Gods will be done. Fasting is one of the most powerful
spiritual disciplines in the Christian faith. It strengthens us spiritually and helps us
overcome barriers that keep us from living victoriously. As we seek God through
prayer and fasting, we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit to transform our lives.
Common ways to fast
1. Abstaining from food:
Fast from one meal a day, OR
No solid food for an extended part of the day, e.g. 6am to 6pm; OR
No solid food for a definite period, e.g. for 1 week, etc., OR
No meat or other favourite delicacies
2. Abstaining from things that distract you e.g. television/internet shows or movies, computer games and holiday
trips etc.
*If you have a health condition and plan to fast, do seek medical advice from your doctor.
When Gods people fast with a godly motive and seek His face with a broken, repentant and contrite spirit, God will
hear us from heaven and heal our lives, our church, our communities, our nation, and world. Seek God in prayer as
you fast. Be attentive to listen to what God could be speaking and respond to Him in prayer and actions.
2 Chronicles 7:14
if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their
wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
The Bible tells us who Jesus is. He is the First and the Last and the Alpha
and the Omega (Rev 22:13). He is the Creator of all things. He exists
to accomplish it?
before all creation (Gen 1:1) and He will be there at the end of all things
(Rev 22:20). By being the Creator, God is also the Initiator. Therefore, God
alone is the Cause, the Source and the Sustainer of all things new.
God initiates the relationship with man. God is also the one who initiates
reconciliation with man when we sin and turn away from Him.
God can initiate new life. Before we knew Christ, we were dead in
our sins. But after knowing Christ, we are made alive to become new
creations in Him.
God is also the one who initiates completely new or Kainos plans, plans
that reflect His character and fulfil His purpose.
What does this season of Kainos mean to you? God is the one who
initiates all things new. Expect Kainos to take place in your life (Isa 43:19)!

Have you ever made a New Year resolution that you cant keep? You
want to lose weight, but cant resist the lure of fast food. You want to be
punctual at work, but keep snoozing in bed. What you want to do you
cant, because youre not able to kick a bad habit.
Similarly, you may want to participate in Gods Kainos plans, but you cant
do so wholeheartedly because youre caught in sin. Overwhelmed by
guilt, you think you would never be good enough to do Gods work.
There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus is the
declaration of Paul for all who acknowledge Jesus as their Saviour and
Lord. Whoever believes in Jesus will receive freedom from the bondage
of sin. In Rom 8, the Bible promises believers that the Holy Spirit will
enable them to overcome sin if they choose to yield to the Spirit.

There was a toy car but only one child could sit on it at any one time. As
usual, the boys fought to sit on it. The father patiently taught the boys to
take turns to share the toy. As one of them sat on it, the other would look
on anxiously, sometimes even whining and crying for his turn. Despite
their discomfort, the boys would look to their father for instruction
over all.
In every kingdom, the subjects bow and submit to the authority of the
king, the ruler of the land. In the same way, everything in this world
submits to Jesus Christ, who is the Kings of kings and Lord of Lords (1
Tim 6:15). God has placed all authorities under Christ (Eph 1:22-23)! Not
only is Jesus the King, He is our King (Isa 43:15).
In this Kainos season, we may face new twists and turns in our lives. Our
future may seem uncertain. These changes could make us uncomfortable,
even unhappy or anxious. But by looking to Jesus for instruction and
trusting that He is in control, we are able to obey Him wholeheartedly
and manage changes with confidence and courage. Because we belong
to Him.

10,000 Reasons
Matt Redman
1 Peter 1:13-23
Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be
brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do
not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who
called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy.

17
Since you call on a Father who judges each persons work impartially, live out your time
as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things
such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to
you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish
or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these
last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead
and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
22
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love
for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again,
not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
When we think of holy, we may get images of a monk or priest who live
in far-away places and avoid any kind of fun. Our impression of holy
people may be people who trade their luxury cars, comfortable homes,
and well-paying jobs for a volunteer stint in a third world country. Holy
may even have a negative connotation we could use the word to
describe individuals who behave as if they are better than anyone else.
While the above cases may happen sometimes, they dont present an
accurate picture of holiness.
To be holy (hagios) is to be different. In the New Testament, it also
refers to different from the world. It implies the meaning of set apart.
God calls His people to be holy and expects us to be set apart from the
world. He expects us to think (v1), live (v17) and love (v22) differently. We
are to be Gods unique people who will draw others to Him.
We can live up to our calling to be holy because of Gods transformational
work in us, which has already begun. What He has started, He will
complete! When we allow God to work in us, we will experience Kainos
in the way we think, live and love.

The Isaiah text is talking about the fulfilment of the New Covenant in
Christ. When we acknowledge that Jesus is our Saviour and Lord, we are
new creations in Christ. We are no longer our old selves. The Holy Spirit
gives us power to transform our mind, heart, and spirit. We can put on
the new self - the Kainos self (Col 3:10).
As new creations in Christ, we can expect Kainos in what He is doing in
our lives. We can also expect even greater things from God, far more
glorious than what we have seen in the past. In this year of Kainos, release

31
In the Old Testament, the prophets foretold the New Covenant and its
promise of the outpouring of the Spirit of God on all believers (Joel 2:28).
On 9 April 1906, in Los Angeles, California, the famous Azusa Street
revival took place with miracles, interracial mingling and people breaking
out praying in tongues as they gathered to seek the Lord as one. Many
historians consider this event as the spark that started the Pentecostal
movement, similar to what was depicted in Acts 2.
In Acts, many of the disciples were empowered by the Spirit to perform
numerous miracles. Peter preached for the first time with authority and
wisdom (Act 3:14-41) and thousands came to the Lord. Other supernatural
works included the healing of the lame beggar (Act 2:3:1-10), preaching
to the Jewish leaders (Acts 4:1-14), and many other unrecorded miracles
and healing (Acts 5:12).
The disciples were ordinary people, just like you and me. But they trusted
that God could use them powerfully in the Kainos work of spreading the
Gospel. Hence, God worked supernaturally through them. He can do so
through you too!

While God does love the individual, He also sees each person as part of
a people belonging to Him. He would provide for His people whom He
had chosen and formed for Himself (Isa 43:20b-21).
Community is so important to God that the Bible often shows the people
of God in action together. In Lev 26: 9-14, God promised blessings to the
Israelites if they continued to be obedient as a people. In the Gospels, the
disciples of Jesus followed Jesus as a group. In Acts 2:1-4, the disciples
gathered together during Pentecost to receive the baptism of the Holy
Spirit.
The community is also the place where believers receive encouragement
and support. In Acts 4:23, the believers were encouraged when the
apostles testified about the work that the Lord had done through
them while they were arrested by the religious authorities. In Acts 2:45,
believers in need would receive support from wealthier believers who
sold their land to help them.
No community is perfect. But we have Jesus, the perfect Head of the
family who loves His people enough to die for them. He is a perfect
Leader who leads us to become more like Him and fulfil His purpose in
this world.
As we become more like Jesus, we can experience reconciliation and
grace, joy and peace, miracles and healing, and even Kainos things that
we have yet to see.

Believers are called to walk by faith and not by sight. The book of Hebrews
in your life.
Having faith in God means we trust Him enough to follow Him even
when we do not understand. We choose to obey Him even when we do
not yet receive what has been promised. In fact, many heroes of faith in
Hebrews 11 were commended for obeying God even though they did
not get to experience in their lifetime what He had promised them.
Faith requires us to show our trust by taking action to obey God (Jam
2:14-18). Having faith is not always easy. Despite obeying God, many
spiritual giants still face impossibilities, fruitlessness or challenges in their
lives.
When we can trust Gods heart for us and are confident in His character
and plans for us, our faith will remain intact despite the challenges or
outcome. Faith essentially is about our relationship with God. This is why
it pleases God when we place our faith in Him (Heb 11:6)!

God is a creative God. He sets the moon and stars in their place (Ps 8:3),

earth (Gen 1). God is the source of all creativity. We are created to be like
Him (Gen 1:27)! We have the full capacity to imagine, dream and create.

Fears are real and everyone has them. Moses was fearful because he
felt inadequate to speak before the Egyptian king (Exo 6:28-30). Prophet
Elijah was fearful when his enemy threatened him (1 Kings 19). Peter
feared when he saw the wind and waves rise beneath his feet (Mat 14:30).
What are your fears today and how do they affect your response to God?
In this Kainos year, we need to take courage to respond to God-given
opportunities. Being courageous is not belittling our fears or deceiving
ourselves that our concerns are irrational. Neither is it comforting
ourselves that we will have the emotional capacity to overcome our
problems.
Being courageous is remembering that God is bigger than our fears.
Joshua could be strong and courageous because God was with him.
God is also with us (Mat 28:20)! God wants us to know that He can turn
the very challenges that make our knees tremble into opportunities to
show His purpose and glory (2 Cor 12:9). So do not let your fears hinder
you from responding to God in faith. Commit your fears to God today

At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they

who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against
the brothers. 3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for
the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs
and wonders. 4 The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others
with the apostles. 5 There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with
their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them. 6 But they found out about it and fled to
the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, 7 where they
continued to preach the gospel.
