Test Your Horsemanship at Equine Affaires

Versatile Horse & Rider Competition
Applications are being accepted for Equine Affaires popular Versatile Horse
& Rider Competition that will take place Friday, April 7, in the coliseum at the
Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. A select group of horse and rider teams will
tackle a challenging obstacle/trail course in this timed and judged race in pursuit
of $5,500 in cash and the coveted title of Champion at the 2017 Versatile Horse
& Rider Competition.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four contestants, with the 1st place
team receiving $2,500 and the title of Versatile Horse & Rider Competition
Champion, and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams receiving $1,750, $1,000, and
$250, respectively. Ribbons will be presented to the top 10 teams, and additional awards will be announced prior to the event. Awards will be presented at the
conclusion of the race.
Who can compete? The Versatile Horse & Rider Competition is
open to all riders age 18 years and older and horses of all breeds and disciplines.
All horse and rider teams will compete against each other. There will be no divisions based on gender or age. A maximum of only 25 horse/rider teams will be
pre-selected based on application materials submitted.
the competition course - The course will feature a combination of traditional and very unique riding obstacles and patterns set in the 90x212
ft. arena of the Ohio Expo Center coliseum. The obstacles may include jumping
over or through structures, backing through a pattern, pole bending and/or roll
backs, gait changes, various gymkhana games, ground tying, working gates, and
riding over or through difficult or spooky objects.
JuDGinG - The horsemanship performance of each contestant will be
judged on each obstacle. Performance points will be awarded on a scale of 1 to
5 based on the riders horsemanship, the horses attitude, and the teams overall
performance. Horses and riders will be required to complete the course within a
given time. Any contestant who fails to meet this time limit will be disqualified.
Ride times will be translated into points, and the team with the highest overall
point score will be the winner.
Admission to the Versatile Horse & Rider Competition is included in general admission to Equine Affaire, providing just one more reason to travel to the
2017 Equine Affaire in Columbus.

PUMPKIN PECAN CRUNCH

15 oz. can pumpkin
1 Tbsp. vanilla
12 oz. can evaporated skim milk
1/4 tsp. salt
3 eggs
Yellow cake mix (2-layer size)
1 cup white granulated sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, melted
6 tsps. pumpkin pie spice, divided
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix the pumpkin, milk, eggs, both sugars, 5 tsps. of the
pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, and salt in a large bowl until well
blended. Pour into 13x9 pan coated with cooking spray.
Stir cake mix and remaining pumpkin pie spice in bowl, using
a wire wisk. Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over the pumpkin
mixture. Sprinkle pecans over the top. Drizzle with melted
butter.
Bake for 50 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm,
topped with Cool Whip.
Refrigerate leftover dessert (if you have any left!). I made this
for a church social and everyone asked for the recipe. Its
delicious and a wonderful holiday dessert. Its better than any
pumpkin pie!

CREAMY CHICKEN
POT PIE CASSEROLE
2 eggs
3 cups frozen shredded
hash browns
1 can cream of mushroom soup
16 oz. pkg. frozen mixed veggies
10 oz. can chunk chicken breast
1/2 cup bread crumbs
2 Tbsps. melted butter
Salt & pepper to taste
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 9 baking dish. Beat
eggs together in a bowl. Add hash browns and mix well.
Season with salt and pepper. Press hash brown mixture into
the prepared baking dish.
Bake in pre-heated oven until crust is lightly brown, about 15
minutes.
Mix vegetables, mushroom soup, and chicken together in a
bowl and spread over crust. Top with bread crumbs. Drizzle
butter over bread crumb layer and season with salt and
pepper.
Bake in pre-heated oven until heated through and bread
crumbs are lightly browned, about 30 minutes.

After the first snowfall of the season, these Miami East High
School Agricultural Education students took advantage of the
accumulation to build a Farm Fred snowman. Freds eyes are
buckeyes and his nose is an apple core left over from an FFA fruit
sales fundraiser. His hat is a very stylish Country Living cap,
which we think makes Fred look quite dapper.
