WELCOME TO CHILD DEVELOPMENT!
I am so excited to have you in my class this semester. I look forward to working with you
as we broaden your knowledge about nutrition and give you hands on cooking
experiences. Please review the following syllabus and if you have any questions please
feel free to ask!
COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course provides students with an understanding of the aspects of human growth
and development. Parenting skills are developed as positive guidance techniques and
child-related issues are studied. Learning activities, observation techniques, and lab
experiences in working with young children may be included. No prerequisite is needed
to take this class.
COURSE CURRICULUM
New for this semester is the use of a child development textbook, The Developing Child.
The following curriculum will be taught throughout the semester: Parenting
Responsibilities, Pregnancy and Child Birth, Newborn and Infant, Toddlers and
Preschoolers, Guidance Techniques, Health and Wellness of Children.
CONSENT TO TAKE COURSE
By Utah State law, parental or guardian consent is required for a student to participate in
human sexuality instruction. State policy states that instruction includes the importance
of marriage and the family, abstinence from sexual activity before marriage, and fidelity
after marriage. Any student without a signed consent form may not participate in this
class.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES
Textbook: The Developing Child
3-Ring Binder
Loose-leaf Paper
Pen or Pencil (To be brought to class everyday!)
SEATING ASSIGNMENTS
I will have a seating chart for each class. The seating chart may change throughout the
semester as needed. You are required to sit in your assigned seat or you will be marked
absent.
TARDIES

You must be in the room when the door closes for the bell or you are tardy. Tardies are
unexcused unless you bring a note with you signed by a parent, teacher, or office staff or
it is called in by a parent/guardian. I adhere to the schools attendance policy.
DISMISSALS
Before class ends have books/papers picked up and the room left tidy for the next class.
Please push your chairs under the tables. Please do not ask to leave early.
BEHAVIOR IN CLASS
The expectation is respect for both the instructor and fellow classmates. Raise your hand
to talk. Cell phones need to be on silent and put away unless given explicit approval by
the instructor. The same rule applies for headphones. You are expected to be in dress
code each class period. If you are out of dress code you will be sent to the office.
There is no outside food or drink allowed in the classroom (though water bottles would
be fine).
LATE/MISSING WORK
***I DO NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK*** If you wish to receive credit for an assignment you
MUST turn it in by the due date. Exceptions are made for absences or extenuating
circumstances. Please see the absent/makeup assignment policy below.
ABSENT/MAKING UP ASSIGNMENTS
It is your responsibility to check on missed work if you are absent, and to keep current on
your grade. You have up to five school days to make up absent work at which time it
turns into late work and will not be accepted. All assignments can be found on my
classroom webpage (see instructions on the following page.) Download the papers
needed, complete and turn in for credit
GRADES
Grades are based on points earned and will be determined by daily quizzes,
assignments, performance objectives, labs, and tests.
Quizzes are given on a regular basis typically at the start of class. Some will be
open book or note and other not. Quizzes are categorized as an assessment in the
grading breakdown. I will allow you to drop the lowest quiz grade per quarter.
Assignments are given throughout the semester. Assignments are categorized
under coursework.
Performance Objectives are required by the State Office of Education and an
integral part of this course. Certain assignments and in-class activities are
considered performance objectives. Performance objectives are categorized as
classwork.
Tests are given after each unit of study. A final exam will also be given that will
encompass the entire semester of content. I do not allow retakes on any
assignments or tests. Please study hard and do your best the first time. Tests are
categorized under assessments in the weighted breakdown.
Behavior is graded once per quarter. Attendance, participation and overall
behavior is evaluated.

Extra credit is available for this class. You may come in before, after or during lunch to
assist with laundry and/or cleaning. Two points of extra credit will be awarded per 15
minute session. Extra credit is at the instructors discretions and subject to change.
