Detection of conditions in the aircraft that indicate the

danger of fire or explosion is achieved by the following
separata systems: Pire Detection, Nacelle Overheat
Detection, Smoke Detection and Fuel vent Ignition Protection
(Ref. 26-31-00) .
The fire detection system comprises three sensing assemblies
in each engine bay. A rear sensing assembly, secured to the
secondary nozzle assembly at spar 72, is routed round the
engine jet pipe. A forward sensing assembly, on the forward
engine bay lower docr, is located beneath the engine fuel and
oil ancillary equipment. An intermediate sensing assembly is
located in the vicinity of the combustion chambers to detect
torching fleme breakouts. This assembly is routed vertically
on the nacelle centre wall f orward of spar 69 and continuad
above the engine where it is secured to the nacelle top plating
and to brackets on the nozzle drag strut end fitting . In
addition the fire detection system consiste of a control unit
and associated warning captions and switches in the flight
compartment. Under fire or test conditions, the system will
flash the lampa in an engine shut down handle, sound a fire
bell and activate the red master warning syst em. Additionally,
if at any time a system fault develops, t he amber master warning
system will be activated and an audio warning will sound.
The Nacelle OVerheat Detection system has temperature-sensitive
elements routed around areas of each engine nacelle where hot
gas leaks may impinga. Equipment in the flight compartment
comprises a control unit and a test switch, both used aleo by
the Pire Detection system, and warning captions. The system
aleo activates the anber master warning system and sounds an
audio warning.
Smoke Detection is provided by photo- cell detectora which
conduct when light is deflected by smoke or hydraulic mist.
The detectora are strategically positioned in baggage holds and
air extraction duct s. Warning lampa and a test switch in the
flight compartment complete the system. Each detector also
activates the amber master warning system and sounds an audio
warning.

elements complete with conduit in the forward sensing
assembly.

Forward and Rear Sensing Assemblies

(Ref. Fig. 401)

The rear sensing assellbly consista of a top and a bottom

assembly, each having two individually renewable sensing
elements . The top asselllbly elements are secured by clips
to apacer bobbins and fitted within a steel conduit. These
elements are distinctively identified as element 'A' or
element 'B'. The connector coupling nuts on each end of
the element being marked accordingly. The bottom assembly
elements are secured by clips on a rail assembly. The top
and bottom assemblies are connected to each other at the
centre wall end of the condu1t (point 'X') and to the
aircraft wiring at the sidewall end of the conduit (point
'Y').

The forward sensing assembly is renewable as e pre-shaped

assembly, which comprises two sensing elements within a
perforated steel conduit, and is connected to the aircraft
wiring via flexible cables. Both ends of each sensing
e l ement in the forward eensing assembly term.i nate i n a
connector , stamped 'A' or

s , which is k eyed to e nsure

correct mating with an associated double-ended coupling,

aleo stamped 'A' or 'B'.
The connectors are provided with flats for the use of a
spanner to prevent the associated elementa and cables being
subjected to torsion loads.

The tests prove the installation and functioning of the wiring

components of the fire dotection systems and are listad under the
heading 'Operational Test', 'Test Continuity', 'Sensor Loop
Resistance Test', 'Insulation Test', and 'Spare Sensing Element

Tes't' .

The Operational Test can be performed without special equipment

or disconnecting any part of the system.
The Continuity, Sensor Loop Resi stance and rnsu lation Tests are
carried out by removing the fire detection control unit and using
the associated j unction box connector for the connection of
standard test equipment.
The Spare Sensing Element Test is carried out at the intermed iate
sens ing assembly in each engine bay by disconnecting the
termination blanks from the spare sensing element and using
standard test equipment.
Functicnal and System Tests are not considere necessary.
~ : In the event of disturbance of the fire detection system,
during repairs etc, it is possible that wiring faults or
incorrect connections could be introduced in certain areas .
Such errors could resul t in fire or sensor loop fault
warninga f rom an engine bay being indicated on another
bay ' s warning system.
To avoid this possibility it may be considerad necessary to
ensure system integrity by referring to the relevant Wiring
Diagram Manual chapter and to carry out continuity testing
in accordance with paragraph 3C - Test Continuity .
