The Sandvine Platform

Achieve your policy management objectives and deploy innovative use cases with the
worlds only universal, standards-compliant network policy control platform
Every communications service provider (CSP) has their own reasons for implementing policy control: from traffic
optimization to network security to service creation to business intelligence. Whatever your motivation, and whatever
your network environment physical or virtualized, any combination of access technologies, any solutions vendors
the Sandvine platform provides the features you need to take your network to the next level.
To achieve todays goals while ensuring a long functional lifetime, Sandvines policy control platform supports:
Legacy needs: every network includes older systems that deliver value and cannot be decommissioned, and the
Sandvine platform includes interfaces to interact with these critical components
Todays requirements: todays networks are transitioning to standards including PCMM, 3GPP PCC, DOCSIS 3.0,
IPv6, and LTE, and we are committed to supporting your networks evolution by keeping pace with standards
Tomorrows technologies: the future brings changes both known (e.g., carrier-grade NAT on gateways, softwaredefined networking and network functions virtualization, etc.) and unknown; Sandvine has the most versatile policy
control platform, so adapting to or enabling tomorrows technologies is just an in-field software update away

Meet the Brain: The Sandvine Policy Engine

Realize Your Business Objectives by Linking Any Conditions to Any Actions
The Sandvine Policy Engine is the brain of our platform, and is the foundation of all of our solutions.
Information including measured conditions and provisioned subscriber entitlements flow into the Policy Engine and
charging updates, policy enforcement actions, and business intelligence emerge.
While typical systems restrict the user to a few conditions and rapidly run out of rules, the Sandvine Policy Engine
lets you take action on any combination of infinite conditions and has no rules limit.
When it comes to policy control, if you can imagine it then you can achieve it with the Sandvine Policy Engine.
Detailed information is available in Technology Showcase: The Sandvine Policy Engine.

Policy Unification across the Data Plane and Control Plane

In Sandvines unique architecture, our Policy Engine is embedded in both the control plane and the data plane. This
unification benefits operators in a number of ways, including:
Faster policy definition: operators define policy in a single graphical user interface for the whole network, and
then click to deploy network-wide
More powerful policy control: operators can make full use of the Sandvine Policy Engine and its features,
rather than having to choose only from basic features common to both the control plane and data plane
elements
Higher policy control performance: many decisions are made in the data plane, without needing to interact
with the control plane, drastically reducing control plane signaling and enabling faster policy control decisions

Policy Traffic Switch (PTS)

Service Delivery Engine (SDE)

An ultra-intelligent PCEF/TDF that enables the

worlds most advanced policy control use cases

The worlds only universal, standards-compliant

policy controller

Deployed in the data plane to intersect network traffic,

the Policy Traffic Switch:

Installed in the control plane, linking the data plane to

the B/OSS layer, the Service Delivery Engine:

Uses deep packet inspection (DPI) technology to

identify and measure network traffic in real-time
Makes local policy decisions and applies policy
enforcement actions directly
Enables online and offline charging use cases with
usage monitoring and 3GPP compliant Gy and Gx
interfaces
Provides efficient scalabilityfrom smaller
deployments and POPs to the worlds largest
networks

Is a complete PCRF, including a 3GPP Release

11-compliant Gx interface
Enables universal policy control (i.e., policy control
on any combination of access technologies) by
supporting the widest range of policy enforcement
standards
Interoperates with B/OSS elements and third-party
PCEF elements to enable advanced policy control
use cases
