Oy Johnson Metall Ab
Your first choice in bronze
Oy Johnson Metall Ab casts and machines bronze-alloy plain bearings
and machine parts to the clients specifications with great precision.
Fully meeting the clients quality requirements and ensuring timely
delivery are the mainstays of our operations.
We machine even the most complicated pieces, with an exterior diameter of up to 1,800 mm. Our machinery is suited to the manufacture of
large batches and production of individual pieces or prototypes alike.
For precision work, we verify the quality of our products by carrying
out inspections with measurement equipment.
We are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, which attests to the high
standard of our management systems. However, fulfilling the requirements of these standards is only the starting point for our efforts to

The Design of Slide Bearings

LOADING CAPACITY
The loading capacity of a bearing with an inside diameter of d mm,
length 1 mm and load F Newton, is calculated as follows:
p=

F N/mm2
dxl

With sliding speed < 1m/min, in intermittent operation, a surface

pressure of half of the yield stress value of the material is permitted.
With sliding speed > 1m/min, or continuous operation the so-called
PV value, Pressure Velocity, (N/mm2 x m/sec) is used to determine
maximum load capacity. For most bronze grades a PV value of 1.75
(N/mm2 x m/sec) is permitted. An axial movement normally allows
for a greater PV value.
BEARING CLEARANCE
For oil lubricated bearings a clearance of 1.52.5 of the inside
diameter of the bearing is suggested. For grease lubricated bearings the clearance should be two times greater. For back-and-forth
movement a clearance as small as possible is used (0.5 1). In high
temperatures the clearance should be bigger than normally.
LUBRICATION
The lubrication groove is very important in mounted bearings. Poor
lubrication is often the fault of flawed lubrication grooves. In hydrodynamiclubrication the groove should not be situated in the load area.
With radial reciprocating movement, place the grooves in the load
area, the distance of the grooves should be <2 x angle of movement.
Solid lubricants can be used in sliding speeds of under 0.5 m/sec.

THINGS TO REMEMBER IN DESIGN:

- the lubrication grooves are placed perpendicularly against the
direction of movement
- great sliding speed = viscous lubricant
- slow sliding speed = rigid lubricant
- viscosity is chosen according to running temperaturen
MATING MATERIAL
- at least 95HB harder than bronze
- for tin bronze alloys a mating material of minimum 300HB
- for aluminum bronze alloys a mating material of a minimum 400HB
- optimal mating material 500HB
- recommended surface finish <1 Ra
- for stainless steel martensitic grades. An austenitic sliding surface
should be hard chromed.
FRICTION
The coefficient of friction for the bronze bearing:
- in hydrodynamic lubrication 0,020,08
- in the movement area 0,020,08
- in a mixed friction area 0,080,15
- solid lubrication 0,080,25 depending on the lubrican type

STOCK AVAILABILITY
Some products and dimensions are held at stock. Check availability
for each dimension from our sales. We can also produce customer
specific dimensions and products.

Casting Techniques

1. CENTRIFUGAL CASTING
In centrifugal casting, the molten metal is poured into a steel mould, which rotates around
its axis either horizontally (shown in the picture) or vertically. The exterior of the mould is
cooled with water to ensure directional solidification. The method produces dense castings of consistent quality. During the casting process, any porosity present in the molten
metal becomes localised to the inner layer, which is removed by machining.

2. CONTINUOUS CASTING
In the continuous casting technique, the molten metal is poured from a furnace to a
graphite die, via a crucible. The die is cooled with the aid of a water-cooling jacket, to
guarantee directional solidification. In the casting of hollow billets, a mould is placed inside
the die to produce the interior shape for the billet. This method allows the production
of precisely dimensioned billets for further machining. Billets intended for automatic
machining must be straightened before delivery.

Machined Products

From raw materials to

finished bearing at once
ARE YOU MACHINING BRONZE AND
BRASS ALLOYS AT YOUR OWN WORKSHOP?
Machining phase normally produces as much as 50-70% of chips from
cast item weight. If you let us do the machining, we contribute this
material almost with its full raw material price. All of our machining
returning and chips go back to melting.
We machine products according to customer drawings. Our machinery
is suitable for producing prototypes, small series for services business
as well as series production for the need of assembling industry. Part
size varies from 20 mm valves to large over 1700 mm sealing housings.
When requested on order we are able to guarantee full traceability
of cast material until the melting batch and provide dimensional and
mechanical testing for the product in our own laboratory.

Cast Alloys
ALLOY

PROPERTIES

USE CASE EXAMPLES

GUNMETAL

Most economic and widely used bearing material. Good waer and sliding properties. Due to
high lead content good machinablity.

J and JF standard bearings

Ball bearings
Ball valves
Pump housings

TIN BRONZE

Good strenght combined with best wear

resistance and slidig properties. Recommended alloy when dimensional accuracy
is required under heavy, shock type, loads.
Doesnt adapt to edge loading as well as
leaded tin bronzes. Good salt water and
chemical corrosion resistance. Mating material is
recommended to be hardened.

All types of sliding bearings

Selaing housings for marine
propellers
Worm wheels
Bolts
Sliding shoes

LEADED
TIN BRONZE

For grease lubrication or when the lubrication is

intermittent leaded tin bronzes are your choice
for the product. Lead acts as a dry lubricant
during poor lubrication. Adapts to edge loading
better than tin bronzes. Best alloys for water
lubrication. Good resistance to sea water corrosion.

Stone crusher bearings

Sliding bearings on water
lubrication
Sliding bearings with high
edge loads

ALUMINIUM
BRONZE

High strenght and corrosion resistance are

the main reasons to select aluminium bronze.
Sliding properties and wear resistance are lower
combined to tin bronces. Mechanical properties are close to some structural steels. Many
machine parts can be produced from aluminium
bronze when checmical or sea water environment cause risk for corrocion of steel parts.
Good lubrication required on slide bearing applications.

Propellers and propeller hubs

Worm wheels
Engine parts such as shims
plates and bearings with high
loading

MANGANESE
BRONZE

High strenght yellow brass alloys stand up with

their relatively good mechanical properties
combined with good machinability and relatively
good sliding properties. High zinc content makes
these alloys prone for dezincification on sea
water environment. Wear resistance and sliding
properties leave behiind those of tin bronzes.

Locomotive cradle bearing

Sliding bearings
Crowns for roller bearings

Basic Data of Sliding Bearings

JOHNSON
BEARINGS J

JOHNSON
FLANGED BEARINGS JF

Sliding bearings are an excellent choice in reciprocating sliding, bearings on corrosive environment and when
the bearing is prone to vibrations. J and JF bearings are produced from JM1 Gun Metal. Bearings with inner
diameter d > 12 mm are produced with longnitudal lubrication groove.

OIL BRONZE BEARINGS.

STRAIGHT

OIL BRONZE BEARINGS,

FLANGED

Porous bronze bearing with oil lubrication based function. Parent material analysis: Cu 89.5%, SN 9.3% and C
1.2%. Oil content ca. 25 volume-%. Most typical field of application is higher (over 0.3 m/s) sliding speed in
radial movements, but use at lower sliding speeds is also possible. Surface load will maximum be 30 N/mm2.

RADIAL BEARINGS

STEEL BODY PLASTIC COATED

THRUST BEARINGS

Thin-walled multilayer steel chassis bearing, with an oil-saturated acetal plastic surface. The bearing is
self-lubricating however, additional grease or oil lubrication is recommended. Especially in low sliding speeds,
intermittent operation, reciprocating and radial movements and with heavy loads, the advantages of this
bearing are considerable. Maximum surface load ca. 80 N/mm2.
