Oxford Playschool B Literacy Pack

Early reading and writing with Oxford
Playschool B
When your pre-school children begin the Oxford
Playschool B English course, they will already be
developing pre-reading and pre-writing skills in their first
language. They will already understand that text and
pictures are different, that text carries meaning and that
text has a variety of functions in every day life (books,
comics, street and shop signs, emails and notes on the
fridge door at home, etc.). In their first language classes,
they will also be honing their gross and fine motor skills
and beginning to acquire wide-ranging skills, which will
help them grow into competent readers and writers.
In the same way, the core Oxford Playschool B course
materials (the Class Book and Teachers Resource Pack
components) already consist of a wealth of activities
which contribute to laying the foundations for literacy
learning.
In terms of early reading skills, the numerous activities
which involve recognition of colours, shapes and
size promote spatial awareness and the ability to
discriminate between objects. These are important
visual skills which children will need to develop if they
are to learn to read. In addition, many of the classroom
routines and language games outlined in the Gua
Didctica, aim to develop memory and concentration,
crucial skills for becoming literate.
With regard to early writing, the course incorporates
activities which promote cognitive skills, such as
the ability to form expectations of print and make
predictions, as well as pencil activities to develop
sequencing and pattern-finding, matching and
grafomotricidad. The emphasis on songs and stories in
the Oxford Playschool course also develop listening skills,
which will later prove vital, if children are to develop an
understanding of the sound / spelling relationships which
both reading and writing in English involves.

The Oxford Playschool B Literacy Pack

Once your learners have begun to read and write in
their own language, they may soon be ready to learn to
read and write in English. As soon as they have reached
a certain level of oral and aural confidence in English, as
well as the sufficient level of maturity, you may feel that
it is time to further their literacy skills and begin to focus
more on the written word.
The Oxford Playschool B Literacy Pack provides a range
of carefully-staged materials, which will allow you to
introduce reading and writing in a gradual, yet effective
way.
The materials have been designed to suit the needs of
a range of teaching situations, which can vary greatly
in pre-school English education. All the materials are
provided both in cursive and in upper case script, to
cater for teachers of both systems. In addition, the
pack also contains reading and writing materials which
correspond to the Plus Units of Oxford Playschool Plus
B, for teachers who have opted for this version of the
course.
The Oxford Playschool B Literacy Pack consists of the
following materials:
Photocopiable activity sheets
There are eight units of three photocopiable activity
sheets in the pack. The units correspond to the Oxford
Playschool B and Oxford Playschool Plus B Class Books and
practise the written form of the core vocabulary in the
same order as it is presented in the course materials. The
three activity sheets per unit are carefully staged:
Sheet A
The focus of this sheet is pre-reading and pre-writing
skills. This activity sheet aims to familiarize the students
with the written form of the core vocabulary from the
corresponding unit of the Class Book. The word on the
page is incidental to the main activity and the children
are not required to read or write at this stage. These
activities also aim to develop a variety of early literacy
C

skills, including visual and spatial awareness, patternfinding and sequencing, matching and grafomotricidad.
Sheet B
The focus of this sheet is reading. The children are required
to read the core words in order to complete the task. In
addition, the activities incorporate a further element of
cognitive challenge and encourage development of visual
and spatial awareness and motor skills.
Sheet C
The focus of this sheet is writing. The children are
required to write the core words in order to complete
the task. Further early literacy skills are also developed
in the way described for Sheet B.
Photocopiable Teachers word cards
There is a photocopiable Teachers word card for every
item of core vocabulary from the Oxford Playschool B and
Oxford Playschool Plus B courses. The sheets of Teachers
word cards can be copied, cut and, if desired backed onto
card, for use in the classroom. The Teachers word cards
can be used in conjunction with the picture flashcards
in the Oxford Playschool B and Oxford Playschool Plus B
Teachers Resource Packs, for presenting the written
form of the core vocabulary. An ideas bank for using the
Teachers word cards is also available on page 3 of these
notes.
Photocopiable mini word cards
There is a photocopiable students mini word card for
every item of core vocabulary from the Oxford Playschool B
and Oxford Playschool Plus B courses. The sheets of students
mini word cards can be copied, cut and, if desired backed
onto card, for use in the classroom. The mini word cards
can be used in conjunction with the picture mini flashcards
in the back of the Oxford Playschool B and Oxford Playschool
Plus B Class Books. They are the same size as the mini
flashcards and can be used for games to practise reading
skills. An ideas bank for using the mini word cards is also
available on page 4 of these notes.

Playschool Alphabet Poster
Motivation is a key factor in helping children of a young
age learn to read and write. Children really need to want
to read and for this to happen their curiosity regarding
the written word needs to be aroused. One of the ways
in which we can achieve this is to create a literate
environment which provides them with plenty of stimulus.
A classroom with eye-catching books and colourful
classroom displays and posters which include text is just
such an environment. For this reason, an Alphabet Poster,
with its friendly and familiar Playschool characters, has
been included in the Oxford Playschool B Literacy Pack.
The poster is also an ideal way to present the individual
letter sounds in English to your children. Children who
have enjoyed the unit stories, songs and activities from
the course will immediately recognize many familiar
words and this will add to their motivation to develop
their early literacy skills.
You can refer to the poster whenever you want to focus
the children on the form of individual letters during
writing practice, pointing to the letters and tracing their
shape with your finger.

Step 2: Presentation with Teachers word cards

Show the children the words from the unit lexical set on
the prepared Teachers word cards. Model each word,
pointing to each letter from left to right as you say it
and the children listen. Encourage them to read each
word with you and then match it with the corresponding
picture flashcard. See the Ideas Bank below for further
activities. If you want to focus on an individual letter
sound, in particular initial sounds, you can also make
reference to the Oxford Playschool Alphabet Poster.

Step 4: Practice with the mini word cards

Review the written form of the words with the Teachers
word cards and flashcards before helping the children
to prepare their own set of mini word cards. Involve the
children in one or more of the games suggested in the
Ideas Bank on page 4 to practise reading the words.

Kims game
Put all the Teachers word cards belonging to one unit
up on the board or on the floor in front of you, if the
children are sitting in a circle around you. Take one away
without them seeing which one it is. Encourage them
to tell you which one is missing. You can use the picture
flashcards from the Teachers Resource Pack as prompts.

A step-by-step approach
It is very important that the children have a very good
grasp of the core vocabulary of a unit aurally and orally
before the written form of the words is introduced. It is
therefore strongly advised that the full unit of the Class
Book is completed before reading and writing materials
from the corresponding unit of the Literacy Pack are
introduced.
The following is a suggested procedure for using the
Literacy Pack materials.

Step 5: Sheet C (Writing)

Review the written form of the words with the Teachers
word cards and / or the mini word cards before
photocopying and distributing Sheet C. Encourage the
children to complete the task. Both during and after the
task, refer to the Oxford Playschool Alphabet Poster where
appropriate, to help the children with letter formation.

Stars word game

Use the flashcard of Star to cover a Teachers word card.
Slowly reveal the word on the word card, letter by letter,
encouraging the children to look at the letters and tell
you as quickly as they can what it is.You can put up
the picture flashcards from the Teachers Resource Pack
where the children can see them as prompts to help them.

Ideas Bank

Step 1: Sheet A (Pre-reading and writing skills)

Photocopy and distribute Sheet A of the unit to each
student and encourage them to complete the task. Once
theyve finished, you may also choose to draw their
attention to the written form of the words on the page
during the teacher-led feedback stage.

Touch the word with Monkey

Put a set of Teachers word cards up on the board or
around the classroom walls. Give the Monkey puppet to
individual children and ask them to go and touch one of
the words with his paw. Alternatively, ask them to make
Monkey bring the corresponding word card to you.

Stand up!
Give out a set of picture flashcards from the Teachers
Resource Pack to six different children (or six small
groups of children) in the class. Then explain that when
you hold up a word card which corresponds to a childs
(or groups) flashcard, they have to stand up and hold it
up. As an alternative, give out the word cards and hold
up picture flashcards.

Oxford Playschool B Literacy Pack

00-Playschool-LB-SO.indb 3

Step 3: Sheet B (Reading)

Photocopy and distribute Sheet B of the unit to each
student and encourage them to complete the task. Once
theyve finished, encourage individual students to read
the core words aloud during the task feedback stage.

Teachers word card activities

Pocket Poster colour game

Put each of the six Teachers word cards from one unit into
a different pocket of the Playschool Pocket Poster from
the Teachers Resource Pack. Say a word and encourage
the children to say the colour of the pocket the word
is in. As an alternative, say the colour of the pocket and
encourage the children to read and say the word.
Pocket Poster number game
Put each of the six Teachers word cards from one unit
where the children can see them and easily take them.
Then say a number and a word from one of the cards.
Ask individual children to take the correct word card
and put it into the correctly numbered pocket of the
Playschool Pocket Poster.

Melodys musical word cards
Ask the children to sit in a circle. Put a set of Teachers
word cards inside a box or bag or face down in a pile in
the centre of the circle. Explain to the children that you
are going to play some music and as the music plays
they should pass the flashcard of Melody around the
circle. When the music stops, the child holding Melody
has to take a word card from the middle, hold it up and
read it to the group. The game continues until all the
cards have been read.
Find your partner
Give out six Teachers word cards to six children. Then
give out the corresponding picture flashcards to six
different children. Tell them that they have to find the child
with the card that matches theirs. Check to see if the
children have found their partners by saying one of the
words and asking the two children to hold up their cards.

Mini word card activities

Whats Twig got?
Make sure each child has their set of mini word cards.
Hold up the flashcard of Twig and explain that Twig has
the big Teachers word cards with the same words as
their mini word cards. Hide a Teachers word card behind
the flashcard of Twig and ask, Whats Twig got? Encourage
the children to hold up the mini word card of the word
they think Twig has. Ask individuals to say their word.
Then reveal the hidden word and ask the children who
guessed correctly to all say the word.
Rockets race
Hold up the flashcard of Rocket and tell the children
that Rocket has a set of Teachers word cards and is
going to hold one of them up. The children have to hold
up the corresponding mini word card from their set as
quickly as they can.

Oxford Playschool B Literacy Pack

00-Playschool-LB-SO.indb 4

Whats missing?
Ask the children to spread their mini word cards out
on the table in front of them. Explain that you are
going to say the words from the set and hold up the
corresponding Teachers word cards, but you are going
to miss one word out. The children should look and listen
and turn over their mini word cards as they see and
hear the words until they find the word you havent said.
When they know which word it is they should hold it up.
Which word is repeated?
As an alternative to the above activity, say and hold up
one of the words twice and ask the children to listen and
look at their own mini word cards and identify which
word you repeated. When they know which word it is
they should hold it up.
Pairs
Before dividing the children into pairs or small groups
to play the game, play a game all together as a
demonstration. Put a set of Teachers word cards and
the corresponding set of picture flashcards face down
on the board or on the floor in front of the children.
Ask individuals to come and turn over two cards. If they
are a matching pair (i.e. a matching word and picture),
the child keeps the cards. If not, they return them to the
same position, face down. Once the children are familiar
with the game, encourage them to play in pairs or small
groups with their mini word cards and mini flashcards.

Alphabet Poster
Come and point
Say the sound of a letter on the poster. Encourage a
child to come and point to the letter and say the word
which is depicted. If you like, give the child the Monkey
puppet so that he / she can point with Monkeys paw.

Monkeys word
Focus the children on the poster and make Monkey
whisper one of the words from the poster in your ear.
Encourage the children to guess which word Monkey
said by coming to point to a picture and / or saying the
word until a child guesses correctly and Monkey nods.
Initial sounds
Focus the children on an initial sound on the poster. Say
the sound and encourage the children to listen, then
repeat and practise the sound. Distribute the childrens
mini word cards from all the units they have covered up
to this point and ask them to sort through them to find
words which begin with the same sound as the sound on
the poster. Then conduct feedback, asking them to hold
up their cards and say the words. Put the Teachers word
cards of words beginning with the same sound up next
to the poster.
Stars magic letter
Choose a letter to be Stars magic letter for a week and
focus on this letter, the sound it makes and the words the
children know which begin with it.You can involve the
children in art and craft activities in which they make the
letter out of different craft materials, e.g. play dough or
pasta, or trace the shape in a sand tray, etc.You can also
ask them to bring examples of things that begin with the
letter in English to school, and make a classroom display.
Spelling game
Spell out simple words the children know by tapping
a letter at a time on the Alphabet Poster. The children
can have their mini word cards out in front of them as
a guide to help them in the game. You could also ask
individuals to come up to the poster and tap out a word
for the rest of the class.

encuentran cuidadosamente secuenciadas:
C

Sheet A
Sheet B
Esta ficha se centra en la lectura. Los nios precisan leer
el vocabulario principal para realizar la actividad. Adems,
Oxford Playschool B y Oxford Playschool Plus B.

aprendan a leer y escribir.
curso, reconocern inmediatamente muchas palabras,

Literacy Pack correspondiente a esa misma unidad.

o a seis grupos pequeos. A continuacin explcales
Encuentra a tu pareja
Reparte seis Teachers word cards a seis nios. Luego
da las flashcards correspondientes a otros seis. Diles
que tienen que buscar al compaero que tiene la tarjeta
que empareja con la suya. Para comprobar si han
encontrado a su pareja, di una palabra y los nios con
las dos tarjetas correspondientes tienen que levantarlas.

Actividades con las mini word cards

Qu tiene Twig?

Whats Twig got? Anima a los nios a levantar la mini
word card de la palabra que creen que tiene Twig. Pide a

pster. Pronncialo y anmales a escucharlo. Reptelo
y practicadlo juntos.
