General Introduction of Automatic Escalator


Automatic Escalator is one kind of conveyor with circulation operation mode, which is an fixed
electrical-driven equipment for transferring passengers in a inclined angel. The main
characteristics are as follows:
1) Strong ability of transportation, equal passenger flowrate with continuous capability.
2) Can be operated upwards or downwards.
3) Can be used as stairs without affecting the transport between floors, when it stops due to
power off or failure.
4) Beautiful shape, and good for environment.
5) Compact structure, less occupied area, easy for use and maintenance. Widely used in public
such as department store, supermarket, port, airport, shopping center etc.

1.1 Basic layout of Automatic Escalator (5 types) are as follows:

1.1.l a --- Single platform layout , to be used as the transportation tool between two floors.

b ---- Single unit in continuity. This kind of layout is only used for one-way transport as the
connection of 3 floors. People can directly enter the second Automatic Escalator from the first one.

c --- Single unit in overlap. People cannot directly enter the second Automatic Escalator
from the first one. The passengers can be guided to the designated sales area for benefit of shopping
center.

d--- parallel layout, it can be arranged in either same direction or opposite direction for the
two units, also in the parallel directions for multi units.

1.2 Different Sorts of Automatic Escalator


1.2.1 There are 2 types of Automatic Escalators (KLP, KLM common & slim) for indoor
operation. Its designed for transferring of passengers in shopping market and airport
with large crowd. The configuration of this kind of Automatic Escalator is quite
compact, elegant and beautiful.
1.2.2 KLT as the public transportation conveyor, mainly used in metro, station, port,
airport & department store, etc. Every week can be operated not less than 140 hours
with large crowd.
1.2.3 KLT outdoor large escalator can prevent raining corrosion, used in the ambient
temperature -20C to 40 C such as metro station entrance, and overhead pass.

2.1 Top configuration of Automatic Escalator (driving system)


See figure 2, Also named Top Engine Room.

The Top configuration of Automatic Escalator is the main point , control box#1 is fixed in Top
Engine Room, and connected with soft string. Advance freely from engine room when maintains.
Driving unit#2 Pass the driving chain#3 Drive the principal axis#4 Running, Driving chain of rail is
fixed on principal axis#5 and pedal chain wheel#10, #6is compaction equipment of rail strip,
which is used to make the rail strip#7 on Friction wheel#11 having enough pressure in order to drive.
#9 pedal lies in the pedal chain #8, which is driven by chain wheel #10.

2.2 Lower configuration of Automatic Escalator


Please refer to figure 3
2.2.l Lower configuration of Automatic Escalator is also named lower engine room acting as
turning and straining of pedal chain. #1 is the 180 guiding orbit of rail strip, guiding orbit is consists
of one turning chain so as to reduce friction. Chain roller is nylon wheel with bearing. #2 is a switch
for maintenance; its button can be used to carry out all kinds of operating action of Automatic
Escalator. There is interlock device on plug. The other manipulative device can not be operated if the
plug is connected in order to insure the safety of maintenance person. #4 is a tension cart of pallets
chain. It can be adjusted the tension state when Automatic Escalator is installed or maintenance. The
tension of chain can be carried out with #3 spring, and the tension force can be adjusted with nut.
2.2.2 Pallet chain #8 which pitched with chain wheel fixed in the main axle can drive the pallets. It
is tensioned by compressed spring. The plate which touched the switch can be move forward or
backward if the pallet chain is too short or long reduce by wear. Automatic Escalator would be
stopped if the plate touched the switch.

2.3 Driving device


See fig.4
2.3.1 Driving device is consisted with motor, reducer and brake etc. When it is on power, the
motor with brake (#1) start, bringing along the fan-shaped gear by the tiny gear (#2) , the
compressed spring will open the brake belt (#3) and the motor will begin running. By the action of
the spiral worm wheel and the chain wheel of reducer (#5), the turning chain (#7) will transfer the
power to the pallet chain wheel(#6) of the main axis. As the whole device is very compact, it can be
installed in the up machine room, where is convenient to repair.
2.3.2 The cage electrical machine, grade 6 structure used in the driving device are smoothly while
working, low-noise and durable. The reducer is the precision worm reducer, which is produced by
the FLENDER, a famous company of German. Adopted with advanced processing technology and ,
the reducer has much advantage such as compressed structure, large carrying capacity, smoothly in
working and low noise. The reducer and the electrical machine are separated , while the axis of the
machine joins the reducer by the elastic column pin, which is convenient to process, assemble and
repair.

2.3.3 . Automatic Escalator, which usually installed indoor, has high requirement to noise. The
maximum value should be lower than 65dB-A. The driving device is the main source of noise,
which should be controlled strictly to ensure the accurate of production and eliminate all of the
factors which may cause noise, in order to ensure that heavy noise wont be in the process of
running.

2.3.4 In order to prevent the overloading of the Automatic Escalator, which may cause the
electrical machine been destroyed, there is a thermo-sensitive switch installed. Once the coil is too
hot, the electrical machine will stop running at once.
2.3.5 It is very dangerous when the velocity of Automatic Escalator is higher or lower than the
rated velocity. So there is a velocity controlling equipment installed in the driving device on the
pavement, see figure 5. The fly wheel #1 is equipped on the braked wheel #2, both are equipped on
the axis of the electrical machine. Under the fly wheel there inlayed a magnet #3, and the pulse
receiver #4 is loaded on the bottom frame, which connects the switch .When the fly wheel is running,
the magnet will produce pulse to control the velocity. When the Automatic Escalator is higher or
lower than the rated velocity, it will stop running at once.

2.3.6 When the elevating highness of Automatic Escalator is higher than 6m, an addition brake
should be equipped besides the normal installed brake (see figure 6). The function of the brake #6
and the brake #7 installed on the same bottom frame are the same.
In the graph, #7 is indispensable, while the highness of #7 is increased only if the highness is higher
than 6m.
2.3.61 When the addition brake is normal, #1 is at the close state under the action of the spring.
When the velocity is higher than certain value, the monitor equipment will give a signal, then the
electrical magnet will make the stinger claw open by the action of the rob, and the curved piece #6
on the rob will drive the switch #3 at the same time. Then the Automatic Escalator will stop running
to make the function of insurance. Especially when it is full carried and downward, the function is
more important.
2.3.7 In order to ensure safety, when the Automatic Escalator is in running or has been out of use
for a long time, there supposed a machine locked equipment, see graph 7. There is a certain hole on
the fly wheel, when the Automatic Escalator is not in use, the lock rob #3 should be put into the fly
wheel, while the Automatic Escalator is in use, it shouled be put into the fixed board #4.
2.3.8 All the Automatic Escalator adopt two pieces of drive chains, it would be dangerous if they
are fracture. Hence the protection equipment of the drive chains is made, see graph 8. While working
normally, the collision piece #4 connected with the pivot frame #1 keep touching the drive chain #5.
When the chain is fracture, the piece would drop and the angular parts #2 on the piece will touch the
switch #3, and the pavement will be stopped running by the broken of the electricity.

2.4.1 The pallets the whole aluminum alloy treadle. There are meticulous gear trough on the
surface of the treadle, which make the function of pretending slippery and guiding both the front and
the rear treadles. The side guide block #4 is made of plastics and keeps the pallets centered via
touching apron board. It should be changed while the wearing capacity reached 1.2mm.

2.5 pallet chain


2.5.1 Pallet chain is the main part of Automatic Escalator to spring the power. The quality of the
chain have huge effect on safety and noise. To fit different situations, the structure, materials and the
processing are also different.
2.5.2 Figure 10 is the pallet chain, the characteristic of the structure is that the wheel of the pallets
inlayed in the chain, which is not only the pulley of the orbit, but also the part which drive the
treadle. The pallet wheel #2, which has a high-quality ball bearing in the middle, is an anti-wear
polyamine resin cast. This kind of wheel material can not only fit the strength need, but also reduce
the noise of running. The tighten device of pallet axis #4 is linked by bolt and is easy to the
dismounting of the rundle.
2.5.3 The pallet chain conveys the pallet and the loaded things above and it moving paralleled in

the apron board. So not only the pallet chain must have enough strength, but the length differences
are also required strictly. Hence, besides the precisely processing, we also choose and match to
combine it. It will tighten and adjust itself in use. If the length extends by 3%, it should be replaced
to prevent the chain destroyed.

2.6 The protection & nip and of the pallet and the comb plate
2.6.1 In order to ensure the safety and there wont be a nip between the ergosome and the
imergosome, a comb plate was loaded in the front of the treadle. The comb plate, which is fixed by
the nail, is convenient to replace. The comb is combined of the plastics or the aluminum alloy. The
comb happened to nip the gully on the treadle. Even if humans foot or materials motionless on the
treadle, it will still be transited to the comb plate smoothly.
2.6.2 When the comb plate is nipped with the treadle, the depth of the surface of the nip should be
larger than 6mm, while the depth of the gully of the nip should be smaller than 4mm.
2.6.3 When the pallets running, every one should be inspected whether they are correct while
passing the comb plate, the center of the pallet gully is the correct place to avoid the rub.
2.6.4 In order to pretend been destroyed because of being clipped by something hard, there is also
a protection of abnormal things such as the heel of the shoes, the tip of the umbrella and etc. When
the abnormal things clips into the nip , the comb plate will be put by the pallet and the comb plate
will move following, then the slight switch will be strike and the Automatic Escalator will stop
running at once.
2.6.5 Pallets the part of carrying passengers. It would be very dangerous if the pallet break off.
Hence, there installed a protection equipment of the two ends of the Automatic Escalator. If the
pallet downward because of the fracture, the switch, which is touched by the treadle, will drive the
pavement stop running.

2.7 Handrail equipment


2.7.1 Handrail equipment is installed on both sides of the Automatic Escalator. The function of
baseboard is protection and decoration. The baseboard is usually consisted of steelize glass, but they
can also made of other materials.
2.7.2 The belt of the handrail is consisted of caoutchouc, nylon cloths and steel. The nylon cloths,
which touches the handrail, make the function of guiding. The steel in the belt of the handrail bears
the pressure. The color of the belt could choose as different requirement, the usual color is black.
2.7.3 The belt of the handrail is made of rolled by steel and the surface is handled by tinning. If
there are special requirement (slender form pavement), it can use stainless steel.
2.7.4 The frame of the handrail is made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy which has been
oxidized.

2.7.5 Both of the inside and outside cover plate should be made of stainless steel. In order to
pretend impurity clipped between the apron plate ,which will damage the running of the pavement,
there is a sensitive switch at the back of the apron plate. Once the apron plate deformed ,the switch
will affect to stop the pavement running.
2.7.6 In some place, the Automatic Escalator is asked to be with light. We only need to replace the
shape of the frame of the handrail. We can install the light tube inside and sealed by transparent
plastic.
2.7.7 The belt of the handrail is driven by the fraction pulley of the driving system. The elastic of
the belt is attained by adjusting the machine and the pressure.
2.7.8 Both of the two sides of the handrail are installed protection equipment to pretend childrens
hand or other things been clipped.
2.7.9 Usually, the belt handrail should running at the same speed as the velocity of the pallet
running, the error should be 0 - +2%. At the bottom of the handrail, there also installed a protection
switch. If the belt of the handrail is broken, it will touch the sensitive switch and the switch will
effect to stop the pavement running.

Safety and the use of the Automatic Escalator

3.1 Before using the Automatic Escalator, we must ensure that each part of the Automatic
Escalator is in order.
3.2 The pavement must be operated by the driver who have been trained ,and when the Automatic
Escalator is starting ,it must be empty.
3.3 While standing on the running Automatic Escalator, the passengers should be faced with the
running direction and standing in the yellow edge of the treadle, with hands on the belt of handrail.
3.4 When children are taking the Automatic Escalator, they must held by adults.
3.5 Passengers carrying a pet should embrace their pet
3.6 Passengers should not take the passenger conveyor with bare feet. Passenger conveyor also can

not used for heavy cargo.


3.7 After starting the Automatic Escalator with the key, the operation staff should inform the
repair staff to inspect whether the general switch ,the witch of the controlling trunk of the Automatic
Escalator and the repair and controlling switch is on when the pavement couldnt run..
3.8 If it still couldnt start at this time, we should inspect whether the four switches of finger
protection or other safety equipment is down.
3.9 If there is a need to replace the direction of the Automatic Escalator, we can operate to replace
the direction only if the Automatic Escalator is stopped thoroughly and no passengers on it.
3.10 If in the urgent situation, put down the emergency switch to stop the Automatic Escalator
running.

the use and manage of the Automatic Escalator

4.1 Both of the up and down machine rooms of the Automatic Escalator could only be managed by
the repairer who have the certification, other persons couldnt enter random.
4.2 The machine room should be ensured that water is impossible to invade.
4.3 The machine room should be kept clean, dry, no mist or corroded gas and nothing else.
4.4 When the Automatic Escalator has been out of use for a long time, the general switch in the
machine room should be taken off.
4.5 After being checked and accepted by the related department and has the certification, then
there is also a qualified company in charge of the repair, Automatic Escalator could start running.

5.1

Handle the urgent situations


In the case that the quality of the Automatic Escalator have problems which are severe and will

effect it running.
5.2 After the earthquake, the Automatic Escalator wont be destroyed much by the slight shake or
tremor, but the Automatic Escalator will be moved horizontally or inclined, or some wine will be
broken off. At this time, if you start the Automatic Escalator, the accidents unexpected will happen.
So it must have been repaired before using.
5.3 When the conflagration is happened, the electric power should be cut down at once to stop the
Automatic Escalator running. Meanwhile, the passengers should be carried to the safe place.
5.4 When it happened to be a flood or the machine room is soaked
If one of the above four cases is happened, the Automatic Escalator could be in work only if the
strict inspection and repair has been made by the related staff.

Essential requirements of repair

7.1 Notes of repair


Those who are not professional repair staff are not allowed to do the repair task without
permission. As the Automatic Escalator is adapted with the PLC controlling system, it must be
carefully while repairing.
7.1.1 While repairing the Automatic Escalator, following rules should be obeyed:
7.1.1.1 It is not allowed to take passengers or goods and the signpost guidepost says the
pavement is not for use since it is under repair should be hung at the entrance and exit up and
down.
7.1.1.2 Take off the related switch. The operation is only be allowed by inspecting and controlling
the switch.
7.1.1.3 The general power switch should be put down while working in the machine room up and
down.
7.1.l.4 The lamp used must be with shade and use the safety voltage under 36V.(the socket of low
voltage should be installed in the machine room up and down)
7.1.1.5 During the period of operation, the chief must work together with the assistant. Repair by
only one person is prohibit.
7.1.1.6 If the driver is asked to cooperate during the period of operation, the driver must be with
full attention and obey the direction of the repair staff.
7.1.1.7 Remove some parts of the treadle. If the electric power isnt cut, the repair staff is not
allowed to enter the region.
7.1.1.8 When the repair or operation in the machine room up and down has been finished, the
front plate should be put down in time.
7.1.2 When the Automatic Escalator is in the period of repair, there are some notes while using
the instruments:
7.1.2.1 The internal resistance multimeter is over 200 K :
7.1.2.2 The electric of the alternating current is measured by Ac 100 A
7.1.2.3 The voltage of the alternating current is measured by Ac450V. As for the insert form, the
entering resistance is below 30OK
7.1.2.4 High pressure megohmmeter should use the 500V battery type, the internal resistance of
which is over 20OK. Shaking megohmmeter is prohibited.
7.1.2.5 the scale of the tachometer is 0 - 500Or/min

Check the reliability of four switches and the reset unit.


Check the perfection of comb plate. See if comb teeth are in
the center of the tooth space.
See if pallet can successfully get though the comb plate. The
nip depth no higher than 6mm. The gap between pallet and
comb plate no higher than 4mm.
Check the comb teeth if there exist any garbage or impurity.
See if the sync rate between handrail and the pallet is in 0
2.
Check the reliability of brake. The gap no higher than
0.7mm while declutching.
Smear little lubricant.
Cleaning the surface of controlling trunk and the driving
machine.
Check the gap of the pallet and the apron board. The gap
should not higher than 4mm(one side). And the sum of the
gaps should not higher than 7mm(two sides).
Cleaning the surface of front plate, come plate, every rundle,
inward-outward cover plate, handrail, glasses etc.
Confirm the voltage of each power supply fits the electric
schematic diagram.
Check the braking distance (0.2~1.0mm) while the
automatic escalator descending no-load. Check the friction
between the brake strap and the brake wheel. Check the
reliability of operation and unmoral collision noise.
Check the speed of driving machine and the overspeed status
of pallet running.
Check the operation status of the driving chain and the pallet
chain.
Check the action and reliability of each switch of the
escalator.
Check the cleanliness and lubricating property of the
lubricant oil in reduction gearbox and change the lubricant if
necessary. Check the wearing status of tooth form and
working situation of bearing.
Check the wearing status of bearing. Change or add the
lubricant.
Check the wearing status of output shaft chain. See if there
exist loose status in the binding site.
Adjust the tension within two rundle chains. See if there
exist relationship between running status of the rundle and
the tension.

Check the operation status and wearing status of two
handrails. See if there exist any worn on the surface, or any
worn-out part of the handrail. Change the handrail if it
cannot adjust to synchronized with the rundle.

7.3 Instruction
7.3.1 Comfortability and the vibration in the running
7.3.1.1 It is easy to cost collision while the arresting gear declutch incompletely. Or it declutches completely, but
there exist wearing between brake strap and braked wheel because of the skew of brake strap.
7.3.1.2 Error generate in the rundle chain extension back pitch and then cost the deflexion of the rundle and wear
with the apron board.
7.3.1.3 The roundness of rundle wheel faults or the wheel bearing damaged.
7.3.1.4 The rundle cannot smoothly transit while turning or the gap between the deflector plate and the wheel.
7.3.2 Driving machine inspection
7.3.2.1 Decelerator
7.3.2.1.1 After a long period of using worm gear or wheel gear, because of the enlarged running clearance or
wearing of the bearing, an axile wobble or a rather large collision and noise will generate while the escalator
turnaround. In this case, the operator should adjust the running clearance or adjust the thickness of gasket in the
bearing cover or change the bearing to reduce the noise of collision.
7.3.2.1.2 Keep the good performance of cleanliness and lubricating property of the lubricant in the reduction
gearbox, otherwise it should be changed in time. Check the oil level height frequently to keep it fit the specified
range by the oil gauge. Recommended lubrication oil: 120# sulfur-phosphor medium force industrial gear oil
7.3.2.1.3 The bearing cover and the box should link tightly and no oil leak available.
7.3.2.1.4 The operator should add ZL45-2 aviation lubrication grease (hereinafter referred to as lithium-based
lubricant) once a month to the rolling bearing of the worm-wheel shaft.
7.3.2.1.5 The lubrication oil in the decelerator should be changed yearly on normal condition. To the escalator
erected recently, the decelerator lubricant should be checked frequently for impurity in the first 6 months after
erected. Cleaning and changing should be taken while any impurity is found in the lubricant.
7.3.2.1.6 The machine and the bearing temperature should be no higher than 80K under normal working
condition.
7.3.2.1.7 Changing the rolling bearing when non-uniform noise or collision noise generates in it.
7.3.2.1.8 Changing the rubber shock pad in the joint slack once in half year. The rubber shock pad should be
changed while the electromotor changed.
7.3.2.2 Arresting Gear
7.3.2.2.1 The brake strap should be joined tightly to the surface of braked wheel while braking. And it should be
leave the braked wheel surface after braking. The interval between them should be no higher than 0.7mm and

uniform in the whole contact surface.


7.3.2.2.2 The action should be flexible and reliable. The temperature rise of braking electric engine coil should be
no higher than 60K.
7.3.2.2.3 No loose in the wire holder of braking electric engine and in good insulation.
7.3.2.2.4 Pin roll should be flexible and can be lubricated by the lubricant (the lubricant splash to the braked
wheel working surface when adding the lubrication oil should be clean up).
7.3.2.2.5 Keep the working surface clean and out of oil and paint. The screw to fixing brake strap should be
submerged to the brake strap, but cannot contact with the braked wheel surface. The brake strap should be
recharged in time when it was worn too much to make the screw emerged or the wearing capacity forereach one
quarter of the total thickness of brake strap.
7.3.2.2.6 At the premise of safety and reliability, adjust the force of tripping spring to meet the need of braking
length of escalator.
7.3.2.3 Electromotor
7.3.2.3.1 The electromotor is connected to the arresting gear via flange. The connection should be tight and the
coaxiality of worm bearing and the electromotor bearing should be guaranteed.
7.3.2.3.2 The temperature rise of electromotor bearing should no higher than 80K.
7.3.2.3.3 The bearing should be changed while the noise is generated because that wearing makes the atmosphere
interval non-uniform between the stator and the rotor.
7.3.2.3.4 The lithium-based lubricant should be added to about 2/3 volume of the bearing room of rolling bearing.
And the lubrication oil should be changed after working 2,500~3,000 hours.
7.3.3 Driving system (the construction of escalator upper and lower part) Inspection
7.3.3.1 Drive principal axis is rotated by drive machine via two-drive chain. The cam in the drive machine bottom
can adjust the chains to reduce noise. The drooping part of chains should be no longer than 15mm.
7.3.3.2 The lithium-based lubricant should be add to the bearing of drive principal axis monthly.
7.3.3.3 There should be enough lubrication between the chain plate of the rundle chain and the big chain wheel.
7.3.3.4 The rundle chain will generate faults and cause the rough running of rundle, and also make the two sides
of rundle touch with apron plate after using a period of time. It should be changed when the rundle chain pitch
error is too big.
7.3.3.5 The lithium-based lubricant should be add to the rolling bearing of the tightener sprocket monthly.
7.3.4 Rundle guide track
7.3.4.1 Rundle guide track is made of cold roll. It contains the upper and lower curve track and the medium linear
track. The curve track let the rundle wheels swing around the turning wall. The surface of track and the rundle
wheel wear surface should be lubricated monthly.
7.3.5 Rundle
7.3.5.1 Rundle is the parts looping around by the rundle guide track, and meshing with comb plate before turning.

And the plastic pedal will easily damaged by the sundries in meshing and should be recharge in time.
7.3.5.2 The nylon guide block in each side of rundle is allowed to wear with the apron plate and the interval of
apron plate is 0.50mm. The guide block should be changed while the wearing capacity reach 1.2mm.
7.3.5.3 When the rundle is running by the guide track, the four roller wheels should to be tightly appressed to the
track surface. After a period of using, when the rundle is deformed and one of the four wheels cannot contact the
track surface and pedal surface permanent change overreaches 4mm, one of the rundle should be changed.
7.3.6 Handrail
7.3.6.1 Handrail is drive by the friction wheel. And there are many wheels in the link that can easily worn and the
residual rubber chip will impact the normal working of other parts.
7.3.6.2 If the handrail is overextended and cannot adjust to 0~2% sync rates with the rundle, and then it should be
changed.
7.3.7 Every safety device switch should be safe and available. All the switches should be checked thoroughly
yearly to make sure that all the switches are in the normal effective status.
7.3.8 Auto-filling device
7.3.8.1 The lubricant auto-filling device can be set up according as customers order.
7.3.8.2 Auto-filling device is a spring piston pump drive by a micro motor, and distribute the oil via quantifier. Its
filling capacity can be adjusted in the 0.2~5 ml range.
7.3.8.3 The filling capacity can be adjust as demand. The method can be found in the instruction book.
7.3.8.4 The auto-filling device should use the clean lubricant.
7.3.8.5 The oil tank should be cleaned half a year, and the oil-in blanket and the filter screen should be cleaned or
changed. If any containment was found in oil, then the oil pump should be cleaned and the oil should be
recharged.
7.3.8.6 Checking the lubrication system period to make sure it is running well. If any accessory is damaged, it
should be changed in time.
7.3.8.7 Keep the oil pump outlet pipes smoothly. Keep the oil brush clean and use kerosene to wash the oil brush
if it was dry.
7.3.8.8 The oil groove should be set up in the passenger conveyor that has an auto-filling device.
