Siddhartha: "The Brahmin's Son" (1-9)

Research and define the following terms (some are Buddhist terms, some
are people/objects, and some are regular vocabulary words).
Brahmin-A member of the highest Hindu caste, that of the priesthood; (in
Hinduism) the ultimate reality underlying all phenomena.
Om- A Hindu sacred word that symbolizes Brahma, spoken before reciting
mantras or mystically contemplated in its written or spoken form.
Art of contemplation & meditation-An art where you consider deep
reflective thoughts on a subject
Atman-The spiritual life principles of the universe, especially when regarded
as inherent in the real self of the individual.
Avaricious-Having or showing an extreme greed for wealth or material
gain.
All-Radiant-Hinduism; ultimate place of perfection where a human becomes
a god.
Atonement-Reparation for a wrong or injury.
Emanating-Originate from; be produced by; give out or emit (something
abstract but perceptible).
Rig-Veda-An ancient Indian collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns.
Discontent-Lack of contentment; dissatisfaction with ones circumstances.
Suffice- Be enough or adequate; meets the needs of.
Ablutions-A ceremonial act of washing parts of the body or sacred
containers.
Supplication-The action of asking or begging for something earnestly or
humbly.
Prajapati-Lord of people, a group of people of Hindu deities presiding over
procreation and protection of life, and thereby a King of Kings.
Transient-Temporary, lasting for only a short period of time.
Upanishads of Sama-Veda- An ancient Vedic Sanskrit text, and part of the
scriptures of Hinduism.
Sages- A mentor in spiritual or philosophical topics.
Insatiable-Impossible to satisfy.
Discourses-Written or spoken communication or debate; speak or write
authoritatively about a topic
Chandogya-Upanishads-A Sanskrit text embedded in the Chandogya
Brahmana of the Sama Veda of Hinduism; one of the oldest Upanishads.
Satya-Sanskrit word for truth.
Banyan tree-An Indian fig tree whose branches produce aerial roots that
later become accessory trunks. (A mature tree may cover several acres in
this manner).
Samanas-One who lives a life of piety and self-denial, free of possessions
and desires.
Ascetics-People who practices severe self-discipline and abstention.

Undeviating-Showing no deviation; constant and ready.


Resignation-The acceptance of something undesirable but inevitable.
Bast (mat made of)-Fibrous material from the phloem of a plant.
Disillusionment-A feeling of disappointment resulting from discovering that
something is not as good as one thought it be.
Benumbed-Past tense of being deprived of physical or emotional feelings.
Pilgrim-Someone who embarks on a journey to a sacred place for religious
reasons.
