NERVOUS SYSTEM & EIGHT LAWS

GODLY TRUST
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
Isa.26.3

“The continual worry is wearing out the life forces.” DA.330.

Stress depletes the stores of brain neurotransmitters and also their precursors.

AIR
“And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;”
Eph.4.23

The brain uses more oxygen than any other organ of the body, (20-25% of oxygen in the blood.) It is
the brain’s food, fuel, lubricant and cleanser. Much of the problems of mental and psychological
behavior are associated with lack of oxygen.

“ In order to have good blood, we must breathe well. Full, deep inspirations of pure air, which fill the
lungs with oxygen, purify the blood. They impart to it a bright color and send it, a life-giving current,
to every part of the body. A good respiration soothes the nerves; it stimulates the appetite and
renders digestion more perfect; and it induces sound, refreshing sleep.” MH.272.001

EXERCISE
“So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people
had a mind to work.”
Neh.4.6

Exercise charges our brain and nerve cells with electrical energy, and counterbalances mental and
emotional fatigue. It lifts our spirits and heightens a persons ability to concentrate more effectively,
increasing our capacity to think clearly as more oxygen is supplied to the brain.

SUNSHINE
“Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:”
Eccl.11.7

“The fresh air and sunshine, and the exercise taken, will bring them life and vitality. The wearied
brain and nerves will find relief. Good treatment and a wholesome diet will build them up and
strengthen them. They will feel no need for health-destroying drugs or for intoxicating drink.”
S.P.T.B.13.

An exposure to the sun has been found to produce greater amounts of neurotransmitters, which are
chemical messengers sent via the nervous system.

Sunshine also acts on the nervous system by reducing the amount of a substance called C.A.M.P.
(cyclic adenosine monophosphate). C.A.M.P. is produced during the stress response, and acts, among
other things, to suppress the immune system and stimulate the nerves ready for action. Sunshine
decreases these levels, thus relaxing and sedating the neurons. This is why many sunbathers go to
sleep.

LEARNING:

The University of Illinios did research on children and found that those who received regular sunbaths
showed greater interest in their classes, attended more regularly, and were more alert. It was
discovered that sunshine treatments helped balance the stimulating and deressing nerve impulses.

REST
“For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in
quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.”
Isa.30.15

“Tired nerves need rest and quiet. Nature needs time to recuperate her exhausted energies. But if her
forces are goaded on by the use of stimulants, there is, whenever this process is repeated, a lessening of
real force. For a time more may be accomplished under the unnatural stimulus, but gradually it
becomes more difficult to rouse the energies to the desired point, and at last exhausted nature can no
longer respond.” C.T.B.H.35.

“The continued use of these nerve irritants is followed by headache, wakefulness, palpitation of the
heart, indigestion, trembling, and many other evils; for they wear away the life forces. Tired nerves
need rest and quiet instead of stimulation and overwork. Nature needs time to recuperate her
exhausted energies. When her forces are goaded on by the use of stimulants, more will be
accomplished for a time; but, as the system becomes debilitated by their constant use, it gradually
becomes more difficult to rouse the energies to the desired point. The demand for stimulants becomes
more difficult to control, until the will is overborne and there seems to be no power to deny the
unnatural craving. Stronger and still stronger stimulants are called for, until exhausted nature can no
longer respond.” M.H.326.

ENERGIZED NEURONS:

During sleep cycles immune system molecules recondition the synapses, (the junctions between the
nerve cells). This helps to solidify memories!

The nerve cells are rested, and provided with their needs by the blood. Their nervous energy is
restored, much the same as when we have our spiritual energy restored when we come apart and rest
awhile!

Losing sleep diminishes the ability to learn – the neurons are not happy and cannot do their job
properly.

A British study gave people a test requiring innovative thinking, then tested the group again after they
had been awake for 32 hours. This time their weary brains were much more rigid in their problem
solving.

EFFECTS OF TOO MUCH STUDY:

“When the minds of ministers, school teachers, and students, are continually excited by study, and the
body is allowed to be inactive, the nerves of emotion are taxed, while the nerves of motion are
inactive. The wear is all upon the mental organs, and they become overworked and enfeebled, the
muscles lose their vigor for want of being employed, and there is not an inclination to exercise the
muscles by engaging in physical labour because exertion seems to be irksome.” HR.1875-08-01.015

SEROTONIN:

Serotonin is a hormone that acts as a neurotransmitter – a chemical which takes messages between the
nerve cells. The level of serotonin in our brains affects our moods, how much pain we feel, the quality
of sleep, how good our memory is etc. Serotonin is mostly produced in the brain between 10 and 11
o’clock at night – if we are asleep.

WATER
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from
an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”
Heb.10.22

“In health and in sickness, pure water is one of heaven's choicest blessings. Its proper use promotes
health. It is the beverage which God provided to quench the thirst of animals and man. Drunk freely, it
helps to supply the necessities of the system and assists nature to resist disease. The external
application of water is one of the easiest and most satisfactory ways of regulating the circulation of the
blood. A cold or cool bath is an excellent tonic. Warm baths open the pores and thus aid in the
elimination of impurities. Both warm and neutral baths soothe the nerves and equalize the
circulation.” M.H.237.

TEMPERANCE
“Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience
godliness;”
2Pet.1.5&6

“Fathers as well as mothers are involved in this responsibility. Both parents transmit their own
characteristics, mental, physical, and their dispositions and appetites, to their child. As the result of
parental intemperance, children often lack physical strength and mental and moral power. Liquor-
drinkers and tobacco-users may, and do, transmit their insatiable craving, their inflamed blood
and irritable nerves, to their children.” C.E.D.233.

“Taking more food into the system than it can convert into good blood causes a depraved quality of
blood and taxes the vitality to a much greater degree than labour or physical exercise. This overeating
causes a dull stupor. The brain nerves are called upon to aid the digestive organs, and are thus
constantly overtaxed, weakened, and benumbed.” 2T.428.

Tobacco is a poison of the most deceitful and malignant kind, having an exciting, then a paralyzing
influence upon the nerves of the body.

NUTRITION
“It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth,
or is offended, or is made weak.”
Rom.14.21

“Those who accustom themselves to a rich, stimulating diet, find after a time that the stomach is not
satisfied with simple food. It demands that which is more and more highly seasoned, pungent, and
stimulating. As the nerves become disordered and the system weakened, the will seems powerless
to resist the unnatural craving. The delicate coating of the stomach becomes irritated and inflamed
until the most stimulating food fails of giving relief. A thirst is created that nothing but strong drink
will quench” ED.203.

“Anything which is taken into the stomach and converted into blood, becomes a part of the being.
Children should not be allowed to eat gross articles of food, such as pork, sausage, spices, rich cakes,
and pastry; for by so doing their blood becomes fevered, the nervous system unduly excited, and the
morals are in danger of being affected.”-- HL.181.

“Our bodies are built up from the food we eat. There is a constant breaking down of the tissues of the
body; every movement of every organ involves waste, and this waste is repaired from our food. Each
organ of the body requires its share of nutrition. The brain must be supplied with its portion; the
bones, muscles, and nerves demand theirs. It is a wonderful process that transforms the food into
blood and uses this blood to build up the varied parts of the body; but this process is going on
continually, supplying with life and strength each nerve, muscle, and tissue.” MH.295.
