The system having more than one degree of freedom are known as several or multi degree of
freedom systems. we have already discussed two degree of freedom systems. A system must
have as many equations of motion and as many natural frequencies as the number of degree of
freedom. In principle, the vibration analysis of two degree of freedom systems is not much
different to that of multi degree of freedom systems except that the later requires much more
mathematical analysis.
As the number of degree of freedom increases, it becomes very tedious solving the equations of
motion and to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes. It will be quite relevant here
to discuss some approximate methods like Rayleigh Method, Dunker lays Method, Matrix
iteration Method, and Rayleigh Ritz Method.

2. A shaft of negligible weight 6 cm diameter and 5 m long is simply supported at the ends and
carries four weights 50 kg each at equal distance over length of the shaft. Find the natural
frequency of vibration by dunker leys Method. Take E = 2X106 kg/cm2.

3. Three rail bogies are connected by two springs of stiffness 40 X 105 N/m each. The mass of
each bogey is 20000 kg. Determine the frequency of vibration. Neglect friction between the
wheels and rails.
