Biology
X/I
2016-2017
2
3 weeks (3X3 sessions)

Standard of Competence
Correlate between homeostasis as mechanism to control internal environment
Basic of Competence
Explain the significant role of blood glucose, body temperature and water balance
regulation in homeostasis
Indicators of Competence
Define homeostasis as the maintenance of a constant internal environment
Explain that homeostasis is the control of internal conditions within set limits
Explain the concept of control by negative feedback
Describe the control of the glucose concentration of the blood by the liver and the roles of
insulin and glucagon from the pancreas
Outline the symptoms and treatment of Type 1 diabetes
Describe how to take temperature using a digital thermometer.
Calculate percentage change in temperature.
Describe the control of water content, ion content, blood sugar levels and temperature.
A. Learning Objectives
Students able to develop attitude relevant to biology such as:
1. concern accuracy and precision
2. Integrity
3.Enquiry
Expected characteristics:
(example: honesty, tolerance, democratic, communicative, responsible)
B. Learning Materials
Laptop
LCD projector
Ppt slide show
Papers
Board marker
Pictures, Charts, models
C. Learning Approaches
- Model:
- Method:
- Learning Strategy:
Class Meeting/Session: Explanation and discussion
Outside of Class Tasks: Experiment
Individual Tasks: Answering MCQ and short answer question in the books

D. Learning Activities
Main Stages
Time/Duration
Introduction/Warm Up-Lead In:
10-15
1) Motivation and Apperception:
minutes
Greeting
Praying
Admire the order and complexity of God's creation of the structure
and function of cells, tissues, organs and bioprocess system compiler
that occur in living organisms
2)
Prerequisite/Previous knowledge:
Negative feedback mechanism
Blood glucose level regulation
Body temperature regulation
Water and electrolytes balance system by kidneys
Main Activities/Step by Step Procedures:
60-70
1) Exploration
minutes
Name and identify on a diagram of the skin: hairs, hair erector
muscles, sweat glands, receptors, sensory neurons, blood vessels
and fatty tissue
Describe the maintenance of a constant internal body temperature
in humans in terms of insulation, sweating, shivering and the role of
the brain (limited to blood temperature receptors and coordination)
2) Elaboration
Class discussion on why it is important to control the internal
conditions of the body
Review concept map produced during lesson Body control systems
and health
Use the book text and/or interactive activities to stimulate this
discussion if needed
For each internal body condition listed the students need to identify
a reason why the condition needs to be controlled.
Internal conditions which are controlled include: the water content of
the body, the ion content of the body, temperature and blood sugar
levels.
A simple practical to show how to use a digital thermometer to take
a persons temperature
3) Confirmation
Review what is meant by both negative and positive feedback, can
explain the general stages in negative feedback and clearly
articulate the differences between positive and negative feedback
systems.
Review the regulation of temperature, pH and blood sugar levels are
examples that students will be expected to describe and explain in
detail.
Review kidney function is often included within this topic area, with
students required to know about the processes of ultrafiltration and
reabsorption and to be able to explain the role of the loop of Henle
and the counter current multiplier mechanism.
Closing / Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
10-15
Students should appreciate that body responses that they are
minutes
monitoring may result from internal and/or environmental changes
to which the body is responding.
Review the concept map/s to see if there are any aspects of
homeostasis of which they are now aware that were not represented
in the concept map/s
