High purity boehmite

Engelhard markets high purity boehmite

worldwide under the HiQ alumina trade
name. Its manufacturing process begins
with primary aluminum to produce an
alumina of extraordinary purity. This is
unlike other processes that start with
trihydrate and yield aluminas which are
subject to common impurities such as
sodium, iron, or silica. High purity denotes
very low levels (<0.01 wt %) of such
impurities.

HiQ aluminas are available as white,

free-flowing, spray-dried powders. These
aluminas consist of small boehmite
crystals, often referred to as
pseudoboehmite. The crystalline character
of each alumina is controlled in order to
tailor their chemical and physical
properties.

HiQ -10 alumina exhibits the

smallest crystallite size and is mainly
used for making extruded catalysts.

HiQ -20 alumina is the general

purpose grade of alumina and is easy
to mull and extrude.

HiQ -30 alumina is typically used as

the binder for extruded oxide blends.
Additionally, supports made from
these products have very narrow
micro/meso pore distributions.

HiQ -40 alumina offers due the

largest crystallite size and is well
suited for applications requiring
exceptionally high acid dispersibility
or binding ability.

Engelhard HiQ alumina is a specialty

product and its applications are quite
diverse. They include chemical catalysts,
automotive washcoat catalysts, catalyst
binders and supports, sol-gel abrasives,
polishing compounds, viscosifiers, and
anti-skid agents.

Handling and storage equipment should be

abrasion resistant. Carbon steel,
aluminum, or polymeric-lined steel are
recommended. Blower or vacuum systems
are typically used to move these products.

A minimum 4000 ft/min velocity is

recommended. Alumina will adsorb
atmospheric moisture and facilities should
be designed to avoid this.
