Construction of Line of Sight Communication from SM Fairview to SM Baguio

Date:

November 28 2016

Establishing connectivity with high reliability is essential in any network or system. The use of Line of
Sight
propagation allows the travel of electromagnetic radiation from one base station to another. We are
proposing a design of a microwave line of sight system from SM Fairview to SM Baguio. Our design
offers
high reliability with minimum down time, leading to a system that rarely or doesnt go down, resulting
to almost no losses in your system. We are capable engineers and are professionally trained in creating
microwave systems and have years in experience designing and implementing microwave links. We are
offering you our design and services with the price stated below. We give you 15 days from the day this
letter is written to consider our proposal.

You can contact us using the email ece124d@gmail.com. We hope to hear from you very soon.
The total price and time of completion is stated below.

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this project is to create a microwave communication
systems line of sight from SM Fairview to SM Baguio with the following
guidelines: 1.) the use of the First Fresnel, 2.) maximum tower height of 30meters,
3.) minimum repeater stations, 4.) at least 99.9999% system reliability, 5.) all
equipment and infrastructures must be commercially available, and 6.) with the
option of using a backbone.
Chapter 1 tackles the base stations site descriptions and the systems relays.
Details about the geographical coordinates, elevation above mean sea level,
weather conditions, access roads, available power supply, telephone
communication, presence of nearby airports, peace and order and terrain type were
briefly discussed to show the possibility of erecting sites in the locations. It This
chapter also provides sufficient information on where the base stations and relays
are exactly located, showing the map of how the sites are to be connected from the
start point to the end point.
Chapter 2 shows the calculation of the antenna height used in the stations.
Values were manually computed using formulas to prove and provide that there
can be a line of sight communication between the base stations and following
relays, which are necessities to provide the end to end communication of the
system.
Chapter 3 gives you the details of the equipment to be used to implement
the designed communication system. All devices listed here are commercially
available. Choosing of the equipment used were strategically planned, considering
factors to provide minimum cost without compromising the reliability of the
system. Equipment that are used here are essential for the next step, Link
Budgeting which is discussed in the next chapter.
Chapter 4 demonstrates Link Budgeting. This chapter shows the values
such as gains and losses that are happening between links. Computations using
formulas were done to arrive at acceptable loses to provide and maintain high
reliability between the base stations. This chapter also provides the minimum
antenna diameter to at least provide a line of sight communication between the
systems.

CHAPTER 1

Base Station and Relay Station Description

A microwave link design between two transceivers near SM Fairview in Novaliches,
Quezon City to SM Baguio was established. The design used 8 microwave relay towers. The
hops between the towers were able to comply with 0.6 Fresnel clearance based on the
simulations from Radio mobile. The towers coordinates were acquired from Google Earth. This
includes the picture of the site taken from the Google Earth and its background, geographical
coordinates,

CHAPTER 3
Equipment Specification

Radio / Multiplexer

EX-5i-DS3
The microwave indoor point-to-point radio is an EXALT, Expandable 1xDS3 + 16xT1/E1 +
10/100BaseT, Tri-band Wireless Backhaul Microwave Radio. This specific type of radio is the perfect
radio for it operates on the 5GHz band which we are planning to operate with. It has a high user
capacity of 200Mbps and a 1 MHz tuning resolution.

EX-6i-DS3
We will also be utilizing this model to operate on the lower band of 6Ghz. It has multiple
selectable channel bandwidths and a 5Mhz tuning resolution.
Antenna

HP12F-57W-N1M
This specific antenna was chosen for it has the perfect range for our use. The antenna has an operating
frequency range of 5.7256.425 GH. The antenna also has a high antenna gain of 45 dBi, which would
be great help to out link budget. It also has the largest antenna diameter which we would be needing,
having a 3.7 m diameter. Last thing is this type of antenna has a dual polarization capability thus we can
do polarization diversity if ever it is needed

57

HSX15-59
This antenna, also by Commscope/Andrews has been chosen for its available size. Some of our hops
will be needing a 4.6m diameter, and this particular model fits the need with its 5.8505.915GHz and
6.425 6.930GHz bands.

HP6F-52/A
This antenna by Commscope/Andrews will be used for the relay stations needing only 1.8m diameter
dish. It has a frequency band of 5.25 - 5.85 Ghz and a maximum gain of 37.5dB

HP4-57W-D3A/A
This is a high performance parabolic shielded antenna from Commscope / Andrews. We will be using this
antenna for relay stations requiring less than 1.2m diameter antennas. It can operate within 5.725 6.425
Ghz bandand has a maximum gain of 35.4 dB.

58

Waveguide

EWP52, HELIAX Premium Elliptical Waveguide, 5.66.425 GHz, black PE jacket

Since we are operating at 5 GHz, we needed a waveguide which can operate on the same frequencies.
And the EWP52 elliptical waveguide is perfect for the job, having an operating frequency range of
5.6-6.425Ghz, falls perfectly for our need. The waveguide offers low attenuation of 4.634 dB/100 m,
but since we would be using a waveguide less than 100 m then it would be very small waveguide loss.
Waveguide Connector/Connector Kit

120E33544-11
Non-tunable CPR340G for elliptical waveguide 52. And a connector reattachment kit for
EWP52 HELIAX elliptical waveguide includes rubber gasket parts. Since we are going to use a
EWP52 waveguide then this type of connector is necessary.

Grounding Kit

204989-6
Standard Grounding Kit for 4 in corrugated coaxial cable and elliptical waveguide 50 and 52, this kit
is necessary for the grounding of the EW52-50. Ensuring that it is properly grounded.

Primary Power Source

In theory the whole system would be primary powered through electrical provider present on the specified
location. All of the proposed location would be placed where there will be an electrical power provider,
thus no equipment would be needed, and all would be provided by the provider itself.

59

Secondary Power Source

Ventev - 24V, 600Ah Battery Rack System/MTR 3000

In case of power interruption the system needs to be powered with a secondary source. The specific
model can easily supply power to the whole system for a small period of time until the primary
power source is back. The model has an output of 24V, 600Ah which has enough juice to power the
whole system including the multiplexer, dehydrator, and any a/c unit for the station.

Dehydrator

MT050B-81315
The dehydrator is used to pressurize the waveguides to avoid rusting and for a longer life span. Automatic
CommScope Dehydrators maintain the performance of your antenna system components and save money due
thanks to lower maintenance costs. Andrew has a wide variety of pressurization equipment to assure you of a
dehydrator compatible with your system and design flexibility to meet future needs.

Tower

Sabre - S3TL VL - S3TL Series VL Self-Supporting Tower

We have chosen the S3TL-VL series from Sabre as our Self-Supporting towers. This tower is designed
for very-light use and can support our antennas with relative ease. The height we will be using will be
dependent on the relay station and will range from 60ft to 100ft

Conclusion
The design provides line of sight microwave communication between the 2
base stations, namely SM Fairview and SM Baguio. Although there are many
possible ways to provide communication between 2 base stations, constructing
relays are possible in many different locations, the group have chosen and believed
that this is the minimum number of relay stations that should be constructed to
meet the goal. Parameters and requirements needed were taken into consideration
and were computed following the steps required by our instructor. According to the
values obtained and based on the table of compliance, we conclude that the
minimum requirements of the design have been met.

Recommendation
We recommend to re adjust the positions of some relay stations particularly
Baliuag to optimize more distance, or Santa Ignacia to reduce the distance with
Malasiqui. We believe that a change in this can cut cost and possibly rid the need
of a 4.7m antenna.

Axial Force (FA)

Maximum forces exerted on a supporting structure as a result of wind from

the most critical direction for this parameter. The individual maximums
specified may not occur simultaneously. All forces are referenced to the
mounting pipe.

Cross Polarization Discrimination (XPD)

The difference between the peak of the co -polarized main beam and the
maximum cross-polarized signal over an angle twice the 3 dB beamwidth of
the co-polarized main beam.

Front-to-Back Ratio

Denotes highest radiation relative to the main beam, at 180 40, across
the band. Production antennas do not exceed rated values by more than 2
dB unless stated otherwise.

Gain, Mid Band

For a given frequency band, gain is primarily a function of antenna size. The
gain of Andrew antennas is determined by either gain by comparison or by
computer integration of the measured antenna patterns.

105

Product Specifications
HP4-57W-D3A/A

Operating Frequency Band

Bands correspond with CCIR recommendations or common allocations used

throughout the world. Other ranges can be accommodated on special order.

Packing

Andrew standard packing is suitable for export. Antennas are shipped as

standard in totally recyclable cardboard or wire -bound crates (dependent on
product). For your convenience, Andrew offers heavy duty export packing
options.

Radiation Pattern Envelope Reference (RPE)

Radiation patterns define an antenna s ability to discriminate against

unwanted signals. Under still dry conditions, production antennas will not
have any peak exceeding the current RPE by more than 3dB, maintaining an
angular accuracy of +/-1 throughout

Return Loss

The figure that indicates the proportion of radio waves incident upon the
antenna that are rejected as a ratio of those that are accepted.

Side Force (FS)

Maximum side force exerted on the mounting pipe as a result of wind from
the most critical direction for this parameter. The individual maximums
specified may not occur simultaneously. All forces are referenced to the
mounting pipe.

Twisting Moment (MT)

Maximum forces exerted on a supporting structure as a result of wind from

the most critical direction for this parameter. The individual maximums
specified may not occur simultaneously. All forces are referenced to the
mounting pipe.

VSWR

Maximum; is the guaranteed Peak Voltage -Standing-Wave-Ratio within the

operating band.

Wind Velocity Operational

The wind speed where the antenna deflection is equal to or less than 0.1
degrees. In the case of ValuLine antennas, it is defined as a maximum
deflection of 0.3 x the 3 dB beam width of the antenna.

Wind Velocity Survival Rating

The maximum wind speed the antenna, including mounts and radomes,
where applicable, will withstand without permanent deformation.
Realignment may be required. This wind speed is applicable to antenna with
the specified amount of radial ice.

Antenna Dimensions And Mounting Information

* Footnotes

Operating Frequency Band

Bands correspond with CCIR recommendations or common allocations used

throughout the world. Other ranges can be accommodated on special order.
