Way Up In The Sky

Lesson Plan
Pre-K/Kindergarten Special Education Inclusion
1. Objective: The students will be able to identify colors that are included in the book
Way Up in the Sky. With help they will be able to create their own brown paper bag
bird. They will also be able to follow along while the story is being read and once
taught the cues, participate in the reading of the book with their brown paper bag
birds. The Students will also learn the hand motions that go along with this book.
2. Content Standards:
1. Common Core Standards
1. RL.K.10: Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and
understanding
2. W.K.2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose
information/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about
and supply information about the topic.
2. Ohio Early Learning and Development Standards
1. The students will work on small muscle motor development through touch
grasp, reach, and manipulate.
2. They will Coordinate the use of hands, fingers and wrists to manipulate
objects and perform tasks requiring precise movements.
3. Motivation: This lesson is a part of an introductory Unit for a Pre-K/Kindergarten
special education inclusion classroom. It can be adapted easily to fit the needs of
the students that a teacher has. The prior knowledge that the students need to be
successful in reaching the goals of this lesson are, a basic knowledge of the colors
we have already gone over. To connect their previous knowledge, I will have the
students complete the attached Sketch to Stretch of coloring the bird and practicing
writing out their favorite color and what color the bird is.
4. Instructional Materials:
1. The Big Book Way Up In The Sky
2. 1 Brown Paper Bag for each student
3. Construction paper
4. glue on plastic eyes
5. glue sticks

6. pre-cut bird wings and heads

7. marker sets for each kid
8. Popsicle sticks
9. Sand Paper
10. cotton balls
5. Procedures:
1. Before beginning the lesson, prepare the individual brown paper bags for the
students each with the bird cut out
2. The students will be introduced to the big book Way Up In the Sky with a book
walk.
3. I will hand out markers to them and we will review the colors they have learned
already and introduce the new ones to them.
4. I will then give them their paper bags with the bird cut outs and the materials
inside the paper bags.
5. With guidance the students will create a paper bag bird puppet with the materials
that I have given them.
6. I will teach them the song that goes along with the book and demonstrate how
they should use their bird puppet to go along with the book.
7. I will read the Way Up In the Sky to them the first time while demonstrating how
they should follow along with their puppets and hand motions.
8. I will read it one more time without doing the hand motions and observing them
doing it, prompting when I need to.
9. The Students will complete, with some guidance the Bird Sketch to Stretch. They
will practice writing their name on the top line, coloring in the lines, and then
writing out the word for the color that they made the bird on the page. They will
also write out what their favorite color is.
10. The students will get to hang their puppet up on my bulletin board for everyone
to see.
6. Academic Vocabulary: To introduce the new academic vocabulary that the
students will be using, I will be going through the colors with them by reviewing the
red, yellow, green, blue that they learned previously using the markers in the boxes
they have. they will correct my mistakes when I say a color and then I will introduce
the new colors to them by sounding out the names, writing it on the board and
showing them which marker is that color.
1. Color
2. Bird
3. Red
4. Yellow
5. Blue
6. Green
7. Brown
8. Black
9. Gold
10. Silver

7. Assessment and Evaluation: I will evaluate the students on their ability to follow
directions in making their puppet. Then I will evaluate their comprehension through
the sketch to stretch as well as how well they follow along with the hand motions
and speech.
Value Added:
1. Extension Activity: As an extension activity I can show the students this video
and we can talk about what is missing from my book that is in this video. We
would be working on reasoning, developing complete sentences to express
thoughts and arguing a point constructively through this activity. https://

2. Universal Design for Learning: To meet the needs of students with disabilities
such as dyslexia I would give the students the opportunity to have a high
achieving peer help them sound out the words letter by letter. They would also
be allowed to use the words of the colors that will be written up on the board to
copy down. For more severe disabilities I might have the students pick what
color they want to color in their bird and then I can sketch out an outline of the
word for them to practice writing over. For high achieving learners I would give
them the challenge of writing out all of the colors I used in my book on the back
of their sheet if they finish the assignment early. There are many ways that this
entire lesson can be adapted to fit the needs of many different learners.
