Crop Circles: An Invitation

by Amely Greeven
a personal account of a summer in Wiltshire

The pungent manure smell wafting through

my mothers Wiltshire cottage this morning is
one clue that an extraordinary phenomenon
is coming to an end. The steady drone of
combine harvesters all night every night for
a week is another. As the giant machines
shave down the quivering golden wheat
fields that surround the house into neat,
cadet-like crew cuts, and then plough the
soil full of cow poop to ready them for
next season, the raw canvas for natures
astounding display of crop circles is getting
diminished by the day.
For those whove been participating in the
show since May -- the people who, by visiting
and experiencing the formations bring
meaning to them -- theres a bittersweet
feeling of something profound coming to its
seasonal end. While the rest of the worlds
been watching Michael Jacksons funeral, a
quiet stream of unlikely modern pilgrims,
from English retirees and Belgian tourists
to school kids and tie-dyed travelers, have
found their way to this southwest patch
of England. Theyve walked the land and
in brushing up against something that
defies categorization, elicits feelings of joy,
and surpasses understanding, have had a
mystical experience.
I got an unexpected front row seat at this play
of nature when I arrived here in July. I wasnt
looking to get initiated into earth mysteries,
sacred sites, and mystical patterns in the
grass. My life and work in Los Angeles orbit
around all things transcendent. I teach Vedic
meditation, an ancient technique of mental
de-excitation that empowers ordinary people
to access the vast, silent, innermost field of
Being within. I love my work and I consider
it a vital tool for personal and planetary
evolution. But frankly, I was coming home
to my mothers village of Beckhampton, a
blink-and-you-miss-it strip of houses nestled
under Wiltshires high, rolling arable land,
to do something less subtle. My goal was to
hide out in the country for a few weeks, eat
lots of double cream, and nurse a broken
heart.
4

I didnt get too far with that. Something

happens when your surrounding landscape
is temporarily tattooed with graceful spirals
of infinity, giant jellyfish comprising seven
ascending circles of consciousness, and
phoenixes rising from the ashes, that makes
it a little hard to mooch around, mourning
your man.

reported 29 May 2009

If you have a pulse, you cant help but go

a little Indiana Jones. First, you watch for
early morning micro light activity above
the fields -- it means the local researchers
are out taking pictures of fresh formations
nearby. Next you cross-reference the aerial
images on their crop circle websites with
cumbersome Ordinance Survey maps, to
narrow down the location. And then, even
though youre thirty-five, you get your mom
to drive you around country lanes so you
can stare for telltale signs of activity behind
the hedgerows: clues like two or more
cars parked in unlikely spot, camper vans
festooned with peace signs, or occasionally,
a tour bus unloading Earth Mystery fans
from Amsterdam.
Once I found the way into the formations,
following the pencil-thin lines already
drawn in the crop by tractors, it was harder
still to stay frozen in any kind of relativeworld funk. A few hundred yards to the
east of our house lies the field where the
massive Quetzalcoatl headdress formation
appeared in July; a quick dog-walk has me
plunked in the middle of a freshly stamped,
intricate solar system -- a massive sequence
of circles stenciled into the grain at the
prehistoric ritual site, Windmill Hill. The
proximity of these forms to my kitchen table
is breathtaking. The excitement they elicit
is gloriously childish. (Skipping out from the
giant hummingbird formation at Stanton St.
Bernard, I gave an inward rebel yell and
pledged to be an explorer when I grew up.)

The hardest of hearts, the most distracted of

minds experience an instant softening and
slowing. The only word I can use to describe
the experience is wonder.
As Ive come to discover, theres plenty to
debate about the hows of crop formations,
especially if youre interacting with them as
concepts or signs of a big shift. This kind of
attention is justified, of course. All mysteries
lend themselves to detective work, and
this years bumper crop of formations -seventy in this area alone this summer, with
tremendous degrees of sophistication and
nuance in both theme and actual construction
-- presents a cryptic metaphysical riddle.
There is credible, detailed research available
that shows whats been observed and
measured before, during, and after the
formations appear, and its all fascinating.
For example, its unanimously accepted by
those who bother to look closely that while
man made copycat formations do exist, they
are easy to spot; the majority of formations
are not man made. See crop circle researcher
and author Janet Ossebaards very practical
breakdown of the biophysical abnormalities
in the crop and soil at www.circularsite.com.
Meanwhile, many researchers including
the Wiltshire Crop Circle Study Group have
sent anonymous samples to the UKs major
agricultural labs and consistently receive
results of distinct changes in both plant
structure and soil composition after crop
circles. Theres also plenty of material on
the electromagnetic energy that may be
flattening the crop into these elaborate
patterns. Move to the unavoidable subject
of extra-terrestrials and UFOs and the
conversation gets really long. For the
purposes of this article, Ill just say that
perhaps different brains make different
models in order to comprehend phenomena
thats unknown to them, and all are as real
as each other. You say extra celestial, I say
prana; we both see dancing balls of light.
Other debates focus on the whats. What
is the hidden message in the glyphs -and will we decipher it in time? It can be
quite crack-the-code exciting. But try too
hard to decode, translate, and semiotically
read the symbols and you risk losing the
essence of what theyre about. A child,
frankly, can understand the symbolism of

the crop circles, because they trigger an

instant experience. For example, looking at
a perfect geometrical image, which is what
many of the formations are, will deliver
an instant understanding of something
profound. At some universal level of reality,
even if its far below your chaotic reality, you
know that everything is balanced and in the
right order. You dont have to understand
how geometry works. You dont have to
know the significance of twelve arms of the
mandala versus ten. Like hearing notes in a
tuneful chord, you immediately experience
the harmony as a felt experience inside
yourself when you see it depicted visually.
Likewise with the images of nature,
the cosmos, and symbols from ancient
civilizations that have been coming up in
this years pantheon of crop glyphs. Taken
together, they create a larger theme that
Janet Ossebaard terms, 2009: Year of the
Apocalypse, where apocalypse means the
great revealing, or an end to secrets and
an end to living in a state of disconnect.
Thats good to know. But as potent as these
signs may be, its the individuals experience
of the crop formations that has the power
to bridge that disconnect, not the rational
understanding of them.

Above: The Humming Bird, Stanton St.

Bernard, reported 2 July 2009

Of far more interest to me are the whys.

Why are these forms appearing? Why here
in this area? And most significantly, why
are people coming to them? There are no
right answers here, only insights. What
Ive witnessed is that most people whove
been touched by these happenings, whether
theyve been sitting, sharing, or touring
5

around the barley swirls or attending the

impressive Crop Circle Conference hosted
by the Wiltshire study group two weekends
ago, dont want to nail a definitive answer
about their raison dtre. Theyre simply
drawn to experiencing the ineffable for
themselves.
So let the brainiacs decode the glyphs,
squiggles and dashes -- such as those
featured in the mesmerizing, thousand-foot
long Milk Hill formation that even a fifthgrader would tell you is a message from
the outer galaxies. Ill await the results with
curiosity myself -- and sue me if we missed a
time-sensitive cosmic communication.
I believe the true purpose of the crop art
is to be a bridge: a functional, usable
connecting link between ordinary humans
and the bigger insights about who and what
we really are and what we may actually be
here to do.
Im no expert. Im a meditation teacher, selfproclaimed earth-mystery naf, an accidental
tourist at the metaphysical event of the year.
But I am here and below are my personal
insights into the whys of these beautiful,
mystifying earth tattoos.

Crop Circles are Consciousness

Displaying Itself
The first time crop circles landed on my
radar was earlier this year at a presentation
of physicist Nassim Harameins work at
Project Butterfly in L.A. (a partner of Evolver.
net). Harameins rollercoaster-ride survey
takes the audience from his new formula
for a theory of everything and the sacred
geometry that describes it, to the ancient
civilizations that understood it, to the built
structures and natural phenomena, including
crop formations, that express it. The hairs
on my arms stood up. These wheat field
phenomena were a direct expression of
something the Vedic sages or rishis
describe beautifully: The cosmic intelligence
that creates and permeates everything,
including us, is constantly dancing with us,
showing us its presence and trying to trigger
a reciprocal response.
Call this force what you like -- existence,
being, nature, oneness, Brahman, the ocean
of pure consciousness that underlies material
reality -- the rishis say that its constantly
waving at us, vying for our attention, so that
6

we remember the vastness and wholeness

of our true nature and suffer less as a result.
Crop formations might just be Brahman
operating in full effect: cosmic intelligence
bending stalks of wheat, barley, grass, and
corn into graphic shapes that communicate
harmony, order, and wholeness in a single,
breathtaking instant.
To do this most effectively, its using the
language our generation speaks best: logos.
Its as if the great That has, with a sigh,
recognised that its trademark orchestral
pieces-- the orbits and the tides, the
unfurling of leaves, and the regeneration of
cells that demonstrate beautifully organised
intelligence in every second of every day
-- lack the punch we new millennials need
to wake us up. A massive icon kissed onto
empty fields in the brief hours of mid-summer
darkness? That gets straight to the point. Its
the cosmic equivalent of guerilla marketers
stenciling Williamsburg warehouses, a motif
that makes you look twice. Only this time the
brand theyre promoting is us.

Above: Quetzalcoatl Head-dress, near

Silbury Hill, reported 5 July 2009

Brilliantly, the logos appear on, in, and

created from the very material that most
needs our cherishing and attention. Like a
tattoo on the rump of a very attractive lady,
a golden mandala on the side of a sweeping
hill -- if youre lucky enough to see it from one
of the high points that crown this undulating
landscape --cant help but make you sigh at
the ravishing natural environment that is its
canvas.
As for the recurring themes in this grain

and grass show, I think they mimic the

way themes come and go at every level of
culture. Trends in tattoos, trends in graphic
design -- certain styles proliferate because
theyre what were collectively attending to.
This year, as the Mayan 2012 prophecy
heightens in the mass awareness, its no
surprise that images reflecting Mesoamerican
civilizations, from Nazca line drawings
to Aztec serpent gods, have popped up.
Whats in our collective consciousness prints
out in our collective imagery. It acts as
reinforcement of something thats already
happening.

Above: Aztec Bird, Barbury Castle reported

14 June 2009

Finally, why are there suddenly more of

them than ever? Expectation breeds reality
-- a basic tenet of the Veda and quantum
physics both. The more that members of
the collective turn to look at consciousness
expressing itself, the more it will express. The
more evolved the watcher, the more evolved
the watched will become. This summers
crop circle gallery is not only record-breaking
in number, but jaw dropping in its diversity
and finesse. As interest spreads, perhaps
the biggest and most dramatic imprint of the
season will be generated.

They Exist to Trigger an Upgrade

Moving along a crop formations swath of
sculpted air -- imagine walking through a
curving, knee-high gorge of gold, made by
living stalks that have bowed in perfect unison
to kiss the earth -- can elicit an experience
similar to meditation. Spontaneously, stilled
by wonder, you fall into the very innocent
experience of forgetting to question, of
even forgetting to think. Instead, you are
allowed to simply be. With the chattering

mind quieted for a moment, you might

detect something thats normally drowned
out underneath. The stillness. The place
not dominated by the singular I but rather
pulsing with the simple isness of being
alive, that shared place where youre not
just a lone atom adrift with no purpose.
In my line of work, we call this happening
a consciousness upgrade. Perhaps crop
circles play just as important a role in a
souls development as yoga and meditation.
These artworks made of empty space exist
to safely let a person touch the void in which
everything, including their individuality, is
sourced, and in so doing, help them move
up from one level of awareness to the next.
What I specifically see is that these formations
in the cereals and grasses -- literally, theyre
happening in our food sources -- play a role
in shifting us to a much-needed earthbound
spirituality. As our spirits expand and exult,
we are forbidden from floating into the
comfy, but rather non-urgent realm of the
ethers, by the very fact that our feet are
planted in the soil. Visitors to the formations
have often walked out to this temporary
temple in all kinds of weather. Theyve
climbed over fences, inhaled the crop dust,
and felt the crackling of plant life underfoot.
(They may also have trespassed, though
many fields host a donation box and request
for respect.) Their senses are awakened and
invigorated. Once in the formation, they
cant help but be a bridge. One part looks
to the ground while one part looks to the
heavens above. A vitally important reunion is
taking place between humans and the living
breathing planet they live in.

They Bring Us Back to Sacred Sites

These formations dont appear in this corner of
the world by some random act of geography.
This area of Wiltshire hosts a concentration
of ancient Britains most important sacred
sites. Theres Silbury Hill, the giant mounded
earthwork that swells mysteriously into the
sky, its prehistoric purpose still obscured but
thought to be related to goddess worship.
Theres West Kennet Longbarrow next to it,
the massive burial tomb, or possibly a ritual
site. And while Stonehenge gets the bulk of
the visitors thirty miles to the south, a critical
centerpiece of ancient Britain lies here at
the centre of crop circle land: the stunning,
serpentine avenues of massive standing
7

stones at the village of Avebury, where

ancient peoples, as described in Paul
Broadhursts seminal text The Sun and The
Serpent, may have traveled to welcome in
the sun on Mayday with exuberant fertility
rituals of fire and light.

Above: The stone circle in Avebury village

2010 Andrew Oatley

In the view of earth energy experts like

Broadhurst, this area of England is a place
of power, throbbing with magnetic terrestrial
currents that meet and concentrate at nodes
like nerve centers -- or energetic meridian
points -- in the body. Ancient peoples felt
this energy and lived in relationship with it,
building stone circles and earthworks that
allowed them to raise and praise the natural
forces, to worship the sacred feminine,
Mother Earth, and in so doing, experience
their highest connection to the divine.
(According to Hugh Newman, author of
Earth Grids: The Secret Patterns of Gaias
Sacred Sites, the sites may have also let
them harness this earth energy for improving
their own crop fertility.) By inviting us to walk
this terrain again, even if its just to cut past
an ancient megalith on the way to a wheat
field, the crop formations may serve another
purpose. They reawaken in our ancient
memory some long-forgotten wisdom, such
as how to work with the laws of nature, the
value of devotion to the goddess and the
mother, and how to cultivate a relationship
to a vaster cosmology that could guide us
again today.
There may be more. Perhaps the mass
convergence of humans at these power
centers many millennia ago had a largescale holistic healing purpose. Human
devotion and ritual may stimulate these
8

energy centers, healing and cleansing them,

charging up the meridians so that the earth
could continue to provide. Seen this way,
todays crop circles may be enticements
more than meaningful symbols. They exist
to draw us back, through a numinous sense
of delight and desire, to converge at sacred
sites again en masse. We then become quite
useful participants in some planetary critical
care. Vibrating with excitement, were the
acupuncture needles that the earth is using
to heal herself.

Their Purpose is to Inspire Action

The
intricate
basket weaving
of
overlapping stem, the graceful swirls
and eddies of unbroken stalks, and the
sometimes palpable charge of energy you
can feel amongst the formations -- these
effects cant be created simply to trigger
inner awareness. To be truly useful in an age
of great awakening, mystical phenomena
must catalyze outward action too.
I think thats partly why the medium of
cereals is so perfect for this moment.
In addition to bringing our attention to
Demeter, goddess of the harvest, and
sparking a renewed reverence for everything
ripe and feminine, it makes for transcendent
art with a shelf life. These pictograms are
like temporary temples whose demolition
is already planned-we already know the
installation will get dismantled just as soon
as harvest week hits.
And thats part of their power. Were not
gazing at images etched into the side, say,
of Mount Rushmore or even of the pyramids,
sacred geometries frozen in stone to inspire
endless contemplation. These things appear
quickly in fast-growing life forms. They invite
us to get off our couch and hike inside them
before they dissolve back into the land.
The Vedic rishis also said, Knowledge is for
action. Glimpses of a larger reality or a more
profound purpose are not secret things to
be sequestered. Theyre intended to fuel you
into some kind of action that helps progress
the whole. I kind of like the way these funny
phenomena do that.
Over lunch at the crop circle conference,
I shared a table with a man from Ghent,
Belgium named Igor. An entrepreneur who
is committed to innovating a time-based

model of complementary currency in his

home city, he said hed decided on the spur
of the moment to drive to a ferry to visit
the Wiltshire formations. Hed slept in one
of them the night before. Hed had no divine
visions or curious sensations; polo-shirted
and silver-haired, he was about as un-woo
woo as you get.
Sometimes when youre working with
businesses and governments, you find
yourself moving back to the old ways of
doing business. You get pulled backwards by
their forces, he said. Aware that his work
was a key component of a massive paradigm
shift, and momentarily taxed by the reality
of it, Igors spontaneous trip to the mystical
had highly functional motivation. I need to
be reminded why Im doing what Im doing.

A selection of 2009 formations from across the world

By the end of the 2009 season, over 70 crop formations had been reported in th UK. People
new to the subject always ask if they do appear outside the Wiltshire area and indeed
elsewhere in the world, and the answer is of course yes! Over 40 were reported in 2009.
What we find is that formations that do appear outside the UK are firstly not always
reported because the phenomenon is not widely recognised and people do not know of the
organisations such as the Crop Circle Connector, that will pulich reports. Also, because there
are not as many interested reserchers abroad (and many of those that come from outside
the UK spend a lot of the summer months here rather than in their home countries), there
are few aerial pictures available of worldwirde formations as your usual members of the
public are not likely to hire themselves a helicopter to gain overhead photographs.
With that said, the word is spreading from England about these fascinating designs in the
fields and more and more enthusiasts are checking the agricultral land in the home countries
and more crop circle research groups are cropping up!

Letters
to The Spiral
Dear Francine,
I should be grateful if you would consider
the following letter for inclusion in The
Spiral.
I was born on 13 October 1939. Please stay
calm! My sole purpose in telling you this is to
explain my strong affinity with the numbers
13, 9 and 22.
My link with 13 is obvious but the connection
with 9 and 22 may not be. 9 is manifested
when the digits of my birth date are added
(13/10/1939=1+3+1+0+1+9+3+9 = 27
which reduces to 9). 22 is the sum of 13
and 9 and it appears again when the figures
of my birth year are summed. Adding 13, 9
and 22 of course produces 44 (2x22).
Note two things about the factor of 22 (2
and 11) their sum is 13 and the difference
between them is 9. So what? According to
Julia Line in The numerology workbook,
22 is thought to be a sublime number for
2 reasons. Firstly, God is believed to have
spoken in Hebrew, a language comprising
22 letters, when He commanded the World
to exist. Secondly, it is the measure of the
circumference of a circle when the diameter
is 7 (the magic number).
In Michael Glickmans new book Crop
Circles, the Bones of God, he observes that
22, the second in the Masters number series
(denoting first access to information from
another dimension), has not yet appeared
in a crop circle.

it could be argued that all crop glyphs

containing a circle qualify since both a
circles area and circumference feature 22
in the form of Pi (commonly expressed as a
vulgar fraction with a numerator of 22 and
a denominator of 7).
Although it could be fairly objected that
22/7 is not the same as 22, its in the nature
of a circle that once formed its area and
circumference (or perimeter) is always Pi
times the diameter of the circle.
The inestimable value of Pi, of course, was
spectacularly highlighted in a crop circle at
Barbury Castle on 1/6/2008 confirming that
Pi moves not only in the best circles but also
in the humblest. Was there a message there
about our need to eat humble pie?
Assuming the probability of 2 twos coming
together in this way in a formation is greater
than the likelihood of 2 Fridays coming in
the same week; its time to try to put 2 and
2 together. Well, for a start, 22 reduces to 4,
so should we anticipate the appearance of
the relevant crop circle in 2011 (=4)?
The Olympic Games go around and come
around every 4 years. London hosted this
event in 1908 (=9), in 1948 (=22 which
reduces to 4) and welcomes the Games
back in 2012. As 2012 is a leap year, lets
believe that at the end of the countdown
we will have lift off! It starts and ends with
a 2, so perhaps we shall have to wait until
then to witness our first crop circle explicitly
featuring 22, perhaps it will coincide with
the London Olympics and perhaps it will
even manifest in London, the place of my
birth! Starting and finishing with my birth in
East Tottenham, Middlesex (22 letters), we
have now come full circle.
With all good wishes,

What, however constitutes an appearance?

Does the number have to be explicitly
expressed in a formation as in, for example,
a 22 pointed star or is an implied presence
acceptable? A strong hint would be given by
the appearance of a formation on the 22nd
day of a month and/or the fact that the
digits of its arrival date added up to 22, for
example 22/7/2009.

Jim Seaward, Somerset

Clyde Barnette

Clyde has since attended a WCCSG meeting

and has met fellow enthusiasts to talk to
about his thoughts, but in response to these
particular comments, Francine writes:
Dear Clyde,
Yes, such is the passivity in the world
when it comes to noticing things out of the
ordinary that 30 years of studies, writings,
conferences (started in 1990 by the Centre
for Crop Circle Studies - CCCS), reports, books
and documentary films about this subject
have made little impact. This is because
it contradicts the prevalent materialistic
mindset which is in place at present and
also because the media has waged such
a persistent campaign of disinformation in
the newspapers and on television. However,
I feel that we are making progress. Great
things always start small. The crop circles
keep coming and we keep recording and
publishing these events, helping to make
the extraordinary more familiar to people.
One day it will be seen as normal just like
the concept of a spherical earth rotating
around the sun became normal once people
had got used to the idea. The Earth is not
flat, nor is it one-dimensional. We live in
a multi-dimensional reality that is now
blatantly manifesting into our space; doors
are opening and soon we will look back at
this time and wonder at how we could have
lived within such a restricted viewpoint.

ladies who had entered the field without
permission. One of these two ladies had
actually had a conversation with this man
with no animosity at all, however, following
the accusation he was arrested - but later
released with all accusations against him
being unproven.
Can I please ask your members to observe
the number one rule of all the visitors to
corn circles? Get the permission of the
landowner BEFORE entering a field - and
dont damage crops in the field once you are
there. It is the farmers livlihood which is
being destroyed and crop circle onlookers do
not have a right to treat private land as open
parkland.
Simple observations of simple rules would
save a lot of animosity towards your
members and maybe this year an innocent
person will not be put through the trauma of
being arrested.

Dear Mrs Wilson

Francine

Thank you for your letter.

Clyde has since written again, his experience

has clearly led to many questions and he
has visited the WCCSG office to gain more
information and pick up some introductory
DVDs and a CD of an interview that Francine
gave in Brazil.

I understand your frustration about the

incident last summer as a local resident and
as a person sympathetic to local farmers. As
you point out however we did clearly indicate
that the statements made in our report
were rumours and before printing we did
take the time to talk to one of the ladies in
13

question, who after her first encounter with

the man without animosity, returned to talk
to him again, it was then that she remains
clear in her claims that shots were fired in a
threatening manner in her direction.
We cannot be sure of the events, but I
can assure you that the lady in question
has been investigating crop circles
in England for many years and is an
experienced visitor to the formations.
I feel that in response to your letter, I
should point out that she is not a member
of the WCCSG and we sadly cannot take
responsibilty for the actions of every
member of the public that wishes to visit
this area during the summer. I can however
assure you that we pride ourselves on
having good relationships with the majority
of local farmers, we encourage visitors to
join organised tours and we not only insist
on gaining the permission of landowners
before taking groups onto their land, we pay
them for our visits and we do our upmost
to encourage other people taking groups of
visitors to do the same.
We do publish pictures of the crop formations
on our website along with a code of conduct
about visiting them, but we do not give their
precise location.
We, like you, are local people, we are part
of this farming community and we try to
work with the farmers to ensure that they
can benefit from allowing visitors to marvel
at the patterns that grace their fields.

on behalf of Francine Blake
Hi,
Some years ago,(mid 90s), while in India
I met an Englishman who worked in the
aerospace industry. We became friends,
(although now unfortunately Ive forgotten
his name). We travelled for some time
together to some holy sites. During our many
and varied conversations, during which he
warned me not to travel on the Concorde,
he mentioned crop circles. It seems he lived
in the countryside and heard there was a
circle near his residence. Being curious he
14

made his way to the circle to investigate.

Among other things, he noticed a rise in
body temperature whilst he was within the
pattern. He felt sure that the circle would
have been very difficult to make and couldnt
imagine how it could have been made so
beautifully, particularly in the dark. He said it
seemed to be beyond the capacity of human
methods. Being of a scientific orientation,
he mapped previous and subsequent circles
and found some pattern which appeared to
be a line leading to a famous Celtic landmark
represented by a horse. He enthused some
friends about the circles and it was agreed
that they would take the journey that the
circles seemed to point out, ie they would
follow the line represented by the placement
of circles which seemed to lead to the horse.
Unfortunately, I cant remember what the
outcome of their journey was, but I do
remember him saying that they all felt a
rise in body temperature while they were in
the proximity of the circles and even on the
way between them. This story really piqued
my curiosity but unfortunately I have had
no further input regarding these amazing
phenomena. I live in Australia and have
never seen reference to crop circles in the
media here.
Last night, however, my wife and I watched
the DVD, Crop Circles Quest for Truth
directed by William Gazecki. Needless to say
we were astounded at the frequency and
increasing complexity and beauty of these
amazing works of art. I have been in a state
of excitement since and have been trying
to gain some understanding of what these
mean. Ive spent many hours on the internet
since watching the DVD and this is how Ive
come to find your site. Id love to become
a member, but must watch the dollars and
cents. Do you have concession membership
for people on disability payments by any
chance? In the DVD it was said that Australia
has had its own crop circles but my Google
searches revealed nought. I wonder if you
are aware of the details of where and when
in Australia and if there is an organisation
here similar to yours.

Im originally from New Zealand and Im

sure Ive heard mention of the circles there
too, but I cant find anything yet. Its early
days mind you and Im sure tmy crop circle
fervour isnt going to die down quickly....Id
fervently love to experience one first hand.
Further to that, Id love to find out how I
could learn more, if any books or DVDs are
particularly recommended for example. Id
love to hear of how people feel when they
are within these incredible phenomena and
how they feel upon discovering them.
I realise there is a lot of ongoing research
happening and if the DVD is anything to go
by, it seems these are extraordinary creations
with highly unique physical characteristics as
well as breathtaking beauty and symmetry.
The question of how they are made is
almost as profound as why they are made.
It is clear there is consciousness and high
intelligence behind them, but from where
does this consciousness arise?
I am of the view that anything is possible in
this amazing universe and I have personally
experienced phenomena that cannot be
explained by our current rational/scientific
paradigms. Having graduated in both
Philosophy and Psychology in my student
days, I felt that the world that I intuited
was not the same one as the great minds of
those disciplines experieced. It seemed then
as it does today, that the mind is a suitable
tool for understanding certain aspects of our
world, but that other less familiar faculties
may be required to experience the subtler
aspects of reality.
I am fascinated. I hope this missive finds
its way to a sympathetic reader who can
direct me to material that will help to shed
light on the mystery of the crop circles. Who
knows, one day I might have the pleasure of
experiencing one myself.
Kind Regards, Alan Brown

formations were reported in New Zealand

or Australia in 2009, but they have archives
going back over the last 10 years or so they do charge a membership fee for archive
viewing but the funds help them continue
their valuable work. Visit their site at www.
cropcircleconnector.com. Our own website
at www.wccsg.com reports formations
as they appear in the UK and has links to
research and articles to help unravel the
crop circle mystery. I hope youll find both
informative.
Clare, WCCSG

Dear Francine,
In your editorial (Oct/Nov 09) you say
that its a shame so few people are able to
connect with the crop circles. Perhaps this
is because so few people have seen the
beautiful exquisitely detailed photos of the
WCCSG calendars.
I have a large pin board in my hall where
I display some of my favourite photos from
previous calendars. I am quite disabled so
I dont get about much but lots of people
come to me family, friends, carers, NHS
and social workers, the plumber etc. Youd
be surprised how many of them notice and
ask about the crop circles and realise the
mystery at the heart of their designs and
manifestation.
I also took last years calendar to my day
centre and, again, almost all the members
and care staff were fascinated by them.
Very many people do have open minds and
hearts and they are awed and excited by
glimpses of how much there is yet to learn
about life and intelligence in our universe.
So dont be disheartened. The work that you
and the WCCSG put in does bear fruit.
With love and gratitude
Paula Woolsey

Dear Alan

Dear Paula

The Crop Circle Connector online is a

great resource for circles worldwide. No

Its great that you are displaying the

photographs and encouraging discussion
15

about the formations. I find that when I

tell people about them they are very quick
to judge but as soon as you go into further
depth about the scientific findings associated
with some of the circles and the mystery
surrounding their appearance, plus mention
the sheer numbers that appear (many
people still think just the few that make the
media are the only ones), you soon start
to see them having second thoughts, and
once a discussion has started they become
quite engaged! Well done for sharing your
interest, keep it up!
Clare, WCCSG

The letter below was sent to the WCCSG

office from a forwarded e-mail. We have
received a number of other e-mails from
concerned individuals raising awareness of
the new laws passed regarding GM crops.
Dear friends,
I know that most of you are very keen on
eating clean and organic food -- which we
wont have much longer as now GM crops
are being introduced in the EU. Apparently
England will be the first country to grow
the dreadful stuff. Did you know that GM
potatoes are spliced with human genes? Yes,
you basically from a spiritual point of view
turn to a cannibal consuming human flesh
if you eat the stuff -- which is now to be
planted in the UK.
Tomatoes are spliced with trouts, maize with
firefly, and other horrors.
There is evidence showing that mice fed
on GM crops lived shorter than the control
group, were weaker and had less offspring.
GM foods, as to recent information damages
various organs in the body and leads to
infertility.
There is a petition that might hold up the
evil a bit longer, win us some time. Its not
perfect, but if we wait for something perfect
to come our way, we may just wait for ever.
While we have a chance to hold this up and
throw a spanner in the works we should.
16

I for one signed it, as I have no intention of

eating Frankenstein foods.
Love you all, wishing you health and
happiness always,
Sakti

What have we been up to?

by Clare Oatley

Since the last issue of The Spiral, no. 148

went to print with its wintery pictures on the
cover, it seems that Spring has definately
sprung.
Although we are still getting
morning frosts here in Wiltshire, the days
are sunny, the skies are blue and daffodils
will soon be gracing the gardens here. All
this is bringing us closer to summer and the
forthciming excitement of what the warmer
months may bring in the fields.
In 2008 and 2009 the first crop formations
appeared in Oilseed Rape in April, in years
prior to this May saw the first circles arrive.
It is possible therefore that while youre
reading this edition of The Spiral, reports of
the first formations of 2010 will already have
been recorded.
For up to date information all through
the season, please refer to our website at
www.wccsg.com, we aim to get pictures
of reported formations online the same
day, ideally with shots from the air and the
ground and comments from researchers in
the field.
The Spiral will as always have pictures of
all the Wiltshire formations with comments
from Francine Blake so if you do not have
access to the internet you will get all the
information delivered to your door, and if
you do follow the season online, the Spiral
will give you time to reflect on the images of
the formations and will give you a record of
their appearance.
In February our 2010 events programme
started with an evening of film footage
and photgraphs from Crop Circle / UFO
researcher, Andrew Pyrka.
Andrew gave his friendly and personal
presentation to 35 people in the Coronation
Hall at Alton Barnes. The room was
17

fascinated by still photographs taken mainly

during his visits to Wiltshire last summer
which picked up many strange shapes and
light sources in and around crop formations.

Outside the hall the skies were blue and it

was a beautiful Spring afternoon so as an
extra treat Shaun guided us across the fields
to the old church at Alton Priors.

Andrew told us of his personal experiences

of the strange activity that he has winessed
while looking for answers in the fields
and finally showed us film footage clearly
showing some kind of craft in the sky,
filmed near Barbury Castle last summer.
He welcomed comments and questions all
through his presentation and while some
of his experiences
sparked discussions
with members of the audience who had
experienced similar things, some of his
research rendered the audience simply
speechless!

In the grounds we dowsed the water lines

and tried to find earth energy lines and we
were set a challenge to dowse how old the
yew tree was near the church - this I believe
proved a bit much for us beginners! Im not
sure if anyone did get the correct answer but

Andrews research can be followed on his

website
at
www.cropcirclewisdom.com
where his film footage can also be seen.
I certainly was a little way off (by about 1000
years)! I think more practise is in order!
We returned to the hall a bit chilly as the sun
was by now retreating quickly and warmed
ourselves with tea and biscuits - a very
enjoyable way to spend an afternoon!

In March the group programme continued

with a Dowsing Workshop hosted by Shaun
Ogbourne of the Wyven Dowsing Society.
Twelve people booked for this workshop and
it turne out to be a perfect number. As a
small group we were able to have Shauns
attention as we learned the basics of
dowsing, how to use the rods and for what
purposes the techniques can be used. It
turns out theres more to dowsing than just
finding water!
It took some concentration but most of the
group did manage to find the underground
streams running beneath the hall where we
met, similarly many of us also found the
man-made elements beneath us, such as
cabling, plumbing and so on.
18

Shaun and some of his fellow dowsers will

also join us at the summer conference again
this year where they will give an introduction
to dowsing free of charge and there will be a
chance to put it into practise.
Finally, conference tickets are now on
sale. If you didnt take advantage of the
Early Booking discounts which finished on
31st March, the good news is that WCCSG
members are still entitled to cheaper
tickets, and more concessions are available
to Over 60s and Students. To book tickets
go online at www.wccsg.com or return the
booking form from the conference brochure
with your cheque payment. If you require
another conference brochure, please call the
office on 01380 739966.
If you have already booked your tickets, you
will receive confirmation followed by your
tickets prior to the event.

techniques and see their effects when Shaun
introduces individual stones, creates a mini
stone circle and uses crop circle images to
see what results occur.
This will be a fun, practical introduction to
dowsing, its techniques and its purpose and
will be something you can take away with
you into the fields in the Summer in your
own crop circle investigations.
