Empowering Women and Girls Through Education

Nearly 15.6 % of the Sri Lankan population comprise of approximately 3.2 million youth (DCS, 2012) 1 . Recognising and ensuring the rights of this segment of the population is therefore vital for the overall wellbeing of the population and the development of the country. This is more so when considering that the period of youth and adolescents includes the entry into the reproductive phase of the life cycle where important stages such as puberty, initiation to sexuality, engaging in romantic relationships, marriage and child bearing take place.

Sri Lanka has several policies and programmes that attempt to address reproductive health and life skills education. However, these programmes are often incomplete, sporadic and poorly implemented. Despite existing policies and available data, there is little emphasis placed on the uptake of adolescent sexual and reproductive health concerns in formal and non-formal spheres due to the attitudes of health service providers, teachers, principals and parents. Many adolescents remain uninformed or misinformed on important issues concerning their own health and wellbeing.

This calendar draws on several national policies that reiterate the importance of empowering youth through comprehensive sexuality education and life skills education. Comprehensive Sexuality Education mainly refers to a right-based and gender- focused approach to sexuality education, whether in school or out of school. It is curriculum-based education that aims to equip children and adolescents with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will enable them to develop a positive view of their sexuality, in the context of their emotional and social development (UNFPA, 2014) 2 . Life skills on the other hand are a set of core abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life (WHO, 1999) 3 . They are a group of psychosocial competencies and interpersonal skills that include skills for problem solving skills, decision making, creative thinking, analytical thinking, self-awareness, empathy, effective and interpersonal communication and skill to cope with stress and emotion.
