InfoPrint Pro C900AFP: Operating the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP

Preface
This publication is designed to provide information for operating the InfoPrint Pro
C900 Printer and the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP Print Controller.

Safety and environmental notices - English

The printers are inspected and listed by the National Recognized Testing
Laboratory. Listing of a product by the National Recognized Testing Laboratory
indicates that the product is designed and manufactured in accordance with
national requirements intended to minimize safety hazards. Remember,
however, that this product operates under conditions of high electrical potentials
and heat generation, both of which are functionally necessary.

SAFE0OES

Electrical Safety

Because the forms used in the printer can burn, you should take normal
precautions to prevent fire. These precautions include common-sense
measures, such as keeping potentially combustible materials (for example,
curtains and chemicals) away from the printer, providing adequate ventilation
and cooling, limiting unattended operation, and having trained personnel
available and assigned to the printer.

Use of controls, or adjustment, or performance of procedures other than

those specified in this manual may result in hazardous radiation
exposure.
Turn off the main switch before attempting any of the procedures in the
Laser Unit section. Laser beams can seriously damage your eyes.
The laser units in this machine employ a total of 16 laser beams
produced by Class 3B LDs with a wavelength of 770 to 810 nm and
intensity of Max. 111 (Rated. 38) mW. The power intensity from the laser
unit is 1.33 mW. Direct exposure to the eyes could cause permanent
blindness.
Before adjusting or replacing the laser unit, push the main power switch
to power the machine off then unplug the machine from the power
source. Allow the machine to cool for a few minutes. The polygon motor
continues to rotate for approximately one to three minutes after the
machine is switched off.
Never power on the machine with any of these components removed: 1)

Chapter 3. Operator's overview

This section describes typical operator responsibilities, normal printer operation
conditions, operator intervention conditions, and the procedure to place a service
call.

Operator tips
Use the information in the following sections to make good decisions when
operating the printer.

Environment and ventilation

The printer should be located in a well ventilated room with the correct
temperature and relative humidity.
v If the printer has been moved from a cold to a warm place, do no use it for at
least an hour as condensation may form inside.
v It is normal for the area around the ventilation holes to feel warm from the
exhaust air.
v The internal cooling fan may run when the machine is in standby mode if the
air temperature in the room is warm.
v The room should be well ventilated so that exhaust gases can escape.
v Do not to block the intake and exhaust vents. The machine will malfunction if
its internal temperature becomes too high.
v You may see steam coming from the exhaust vents during printing. This is water
vapor from the paper and is not a sign of a malfunction.
v Keep flammable liquids, gases, and aerosols away from the printer.
v Make sure not to damage the power cord or network cabling.

Operation and maintenance

The printer is a complex piece of equipment and should be treated as such.
v Do not turn the power off while the printer is operating as damage to the hard
disk can occur.
v If you switch the main power off, wait at least 2 minutes before switching it
back on.
v Never unplug the machine from its power source when the main power switch
is on.
v Do not open the covers of the machine when it is in operation as this can cause
misfeeds.
v Do not move, tilt, or knock paper on the machine when the power is on.
v Do not allow small objects such as paperclips to fall into or become stuck inside
the machine.
v Areas around the fuser get hot. Let these areas cool before working with them.
v Be sure to back up the machine settings regularly so they are not lost if there is
an accident or malfunction.

11

Storing printed pages

Preserve the quality of your printed pages by storing them in a dark, dry place.
v Color prints will fade if exposed to strong light or dampness and humidity for
lengthy periods.
v Toner can melt if dried printed pages are stacked or placed in areas of high heat.
v Toner can melt when using solvent type adhesives on printed pages.
v Do not fold printed pages as the toner in the folds can come off.

Toner
Follow these directions when adding or storing toner.
v Do not incinerate the photoconductor unit. Toner dust might ignite when
exposed to an open flame. Dispose of the used photoconductor unit in
accordance with local regulations.
v Avoid getting toner on your clothes or skin when removing a paper jam or
replacing toner. If your skin comes into contact with toner, wash the affected
area thoroughly with soap and water.
v If toner gets on your clothing, wash with cold water. Hot water will set the
toner into the fabric and may make removing the stain impossible.
v Do not open toner containers. Toner can spill, dirtying your clothes or hands,
and possibly resulting in accidental ingestion.
v Do not shake the removed toner cartridge. The remaining toner might scatter.
v Do not install and remove the toner cartridge over and over. This could result in
a toner leak.
v Only use the recommended type of toner.
v When adding toner, do not turn off the operation switch. If you do, settings will
be lost.
v Always add toner when the machine instructs you.
v Do not use recycled toner. This will damage the machine.
v As the toner is entering the printer the toner bottle will rotate. Do not touch the
toner bottle.
v You can change the toner bottle during printing.
v If toner remains in the bottle, you cannot pull it out. Do not remove the bottle
forcibly.
v Do not store toner, used toner, or toner containers in a place with an open flame.
The toner might ignite and cause burns or a fire.
v Store toner containers in a cool, dry place free from direct sunlight.
v Store toner on a flat surface.
v Follow the instructions on the toner carton for installing the new toner bottle.

Operator intervention (Not Ready status)

When normal operation is interrupted, the printer goes into a Not Ready state.
Selecting the Stop button on the operator console will cause a Not Ready state. In
addition, whenever the printer detects an intervention condition, it places itself in
Not Ready status. It also displays an error message on the operator console. The
following types of interventions cause a Not Ready status:
v The printer needs basic supplies service. For some supplies, you can temporarily
bypass this message and continue processing; other supplies require you to
replace them immediately.
v The printer needs basic service that involve media handling or checking on
mechanical conditions. You must handle all messages of this type immediately.
v The printer or the control unit has a hardware problem, such as a media jam or
a component failure. Processing stops so that you can attempt to correct the
problem, or, if necessary, call for service. You can postpone action for some
messages of this type; others you must handle immediately. Some printed pages
may be lost or damaged because of printer errors.

Operator alert lights

The printer is equipped with an operator alert light located on top of the control
panel.

Submitting print jobs

Subming print jobs for the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP must be considered from two
perspectives: AFP and PostScript/PDF.
From an AFP perspective, jobs are sent from a system that implements the PSF
function as defined by the AFP architecture. Print Services Facility (PSF) combines
print data with resources to manage and control data transmitted to AFP printers.
Examples of a PSF implementation are PSF for z/OS, InfoPrint Manager, InfoPrint
Process Director, and others. The key concept is that a sending PSF system takes
AFP pages in a job and produces device-specific IPDS for the target printer.
From a PostScript/PDF perspective, there are more options. The most common
ways of sending PostScript/PDF print jobs to the printer are:
v LPR
v Raw ports (2501, 9100)
v Hot Folders
v FTP
In this manual, Hot Folders is discussed in depth, because there is setup required
on the printer controller to implement Hot Folders. The other methods are more
common place and are not covered in this Operator's Guide.

Stapling jobs
Stapling is applied to the trailing edge of the paper as the paper moves through
the Finisher. The Console Job Setting refers to the location of the stapler in the
engine that fires. For example, the "Top" setting fires the stapler in the back of the
machine. This staple position may be different than the location in the Result

Chapter 4. Operator console tasks

19

column when the other settings of the row are not as shown. For instance, if the
image is rotated, then the staple will not be on the top when the resulting output
is held in front of the user.
The stapled output combinations are shown the tables below. Correct output
depends upon the paper orientation in the input tray (LEF or SEF), the rotation
specified for the job (0 or 180), and the staple setting for the job (for example, Top).

You can download license keyed fonts and non-license keyed fonts to the printer
using a font download utility from an Apple Macintosh computer. The fonts are
downloaded to the printer with the utility using the AppleTalk network protocol.
The AppleTalk protocol on the printer only processes font jobs. The printer does
not produce printed output for font jobs and will not process print jobs from the
AppleTalk protocol.
Do the following to download fonts to the printer using a font download utility:
1. Make sure there are no jobs printing or wait for any jobs to complete. You may
need to hold jobs on the spool to prevent them from printing. See Job
manager on page 30 for more information.
2. Select Printer Definition Network Attachments from the printer console.
Select the AppleTalk protocol and press the Install button.
3. When the Edit panel appears, specify the desired AppleTalk zone for your
network or use * for the default zone. Set the AppleTalk printer name field to
the value of your choice.
4. Press Ok to save the settings. You can change the AppleTalk protocol settings
only when the protocol is installed and disabled.
Chapter 4. Operator console tasks

31

5. Select the AppleTalk protocol and press Enable. It may take 40 seconds or more
for the protocol to change from the enabling state to the enabled state.
Note: No print jobs are processed while the AppleTalk protocol is enabled. If
there are any jobs printing when you press the Enable button, the protocol
remains in the enabling state until printing is complete. Jobs that are sent to the
printer while the AppleTalk protocol is enabled will be spooled and queued for
later processing.
6. Confirm the AppleTalk configuration was successful by selecting the AppleTalk
protocol and then pressing Edit. Verify a value appears in the Network
Number field.
7. Start the font download application on the client machine and follow the
instructions to download the fonts to the printer. You may run the font
downloader application multiple times if you have multiple fonts or font
packages to download.
Note: The download of a single font or font package usually results in multiple
jobs in the printer. You can display these jobs from Job Manager.
8. When you are finished downloading fonts, select the AppleTalk protocol and
press Disable. It may take 40 seconds or more for the protocol to change from
the disabling state to the disabled state. If fonts were received by the printer, an
intervention message F321 Font files have been received. A restart is required
appears. The font download utility may also instruct you to restart the printer.
9. Restart the printer to start or resume printing. The AppleTalk protocol is
disabled by default when the printer restarts.

Using a PostScript job to download fonts

You can download PostScript fonts to the printer through a PostScript job . Font
jobs are different than print jobs because the printer does not produce printed
output for font jobs, even if the job attempts to generate printed output.
Note: A printer restart is not required to use the font after downloading a font
job.
Use one of the following communication methods to download fonts using a
PostScript job:
v FTP
v LPR
v Hot Folders
v Port 2501
v Port 9100
v Font Download web page
You must install and enable FTP, LPR, and Hot Folders before you can use them to
download font jobs to the printer. See Enabling and disabling protocols on page
22 for more information.
Downloading a font job using FTP
Do the following to download a font job using FTP:
1. Make an FTP connection to the printer from the client machine. For example,
ftp myprinter

32

InfoPrint Pro C900AFP: Operating the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP

2. Set the FTP connection to binary mode using the binary or bin command.
3. Change the directory on the printer to the /fonts directory by entering cd
/fonts.
4. Send the font job to the printer. For example, the command put myfonts.ps
would send the file myfonts.ps to the fonts directory on the printer.
5. Enter the bye command to end the FTP connection
Downloading a font job using the LPR command
You can download a font job from a client machine to the "fonts" queue using the
lpr command. For example, you can enter the command lpr S myPrinter P
fonts myfonts.ps to download the file myfonts.ps. to the printer.
Copying a PostScript job file to the hot folder
You can copy the PostScript job file to the /fonts hot folder on the printer. See
Hot folders on page 26 for more information.
Downloading fonts using web pages
If you choose to download fonts from the web page, you must configure the
printer for remote access. See Configuring remote access for online access (web
pages) on page 67 for more information.
To download fonts using web pages, connect to the printer from a browser and
select Font Download from the Resources menu and press the Choose button.
Select the font job file name and then select Open. Select the Send File button to
download the file to the printer.

Deleting downloaded fonts

You may want to delete fonts that have been downloaded to the printer.
Downloaded fonts can be deleted using the following methods:
v Delete fonts through the font download utility. This method usually deletes only
the fonts that have been downloaded to the printer through the utility. Follow
the instructions for you font download utility to delete the downloaded fonts.
v Select Printer Definition PDL PDF from the operator console. Press the
Delete PostScript user fonts button. The fonts will be deleted when you restart
the printer.

v Load paper into the Multi Bypass Tray (Tray 7), the Large Capacity Tray (LCT),
and the Wide Large Capacity Tray (Wide LCT) with the print side face up.
v If you assign the same media name in two or more trays, the Automatic Tray
Switching is set to ON, then the controller automatically switches to the next
tray in sequence when a tray runs out of paper. The Automatic Tray Switching
setting is on the Printer Definition Printer Basic panel.
See the Cut-Sheet Paper Reference for more information.

Loading thick paper

This section provides details and recommendations about loading thick paper.
When loading thick paper of 127 220 g/m2 (61 80 lb. Cover) in paper trays or
in the Multi Bypass Tray (Tray 7), or of 127 300 g/m2 (104 110 lb. Cover) in the
wide large capacity tray (Wide LCT), follow the recommendations below to
prevent misfeeds and loss of image quality.
v Store all paper together in the same place. Store in a room where the
temperature is 20 25 C (68 77 F) with a relative humidity of 30 65%.
v Smooth out any curls in the paper before loading it.
v When loading thick paper in paper Trays 1, 2, LCT, or Wide LCT, set the paper

Defining media
Before you can print, you must establish settings for the media. If you save the
media assignments for each tray in a Snapshot, you need only load the Snapshot
instead of assigning the media to each tray one by one.
Use the Manage Media Edit screen to define the attributes of media used in the
printer, including length, width, and thickness. For media used for IPDS, you can
also define a name, a component ID, and color management settings including
weight, brightness, finish, and color.
To display the Manage Media panel, select Forms Manage Media.
Tasks:
v To define the attributes for the media, make changes on the panel and select
OK.
v To define color attributes for an IPDS media type that is loaded in the printer,
select the IPDS Color Management Resources tab.

Creating and deleting media

To create a new media type, do the following:
1. Select an existing media type from the list that most closely matches the media
you are trying to create and select Copy.
2. Assign a name to the new media and then select Next.
3. Enter the Basic settings and verify the Advanced settings for the new media.
4. Optionally, perform a media characterization for the media. (SeeManaging
color on the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP on page 67 for more information about
media characterization.)
Note: Media that isn't listed in the Media Characterization Type dropdown
menu may need to be characterized to get the best printed output. If the media
you are using is not in the Media Characterization Type dropdown menu, you
should first calibrate the engine and then characterize that media using the
Custom Characterization radio button.
5. Select OK.

Yes = Prevents unspecified
Use this setting with preprinted or pre-punched media to

prevent arbitrary rotation of the print data.
If you set Edge Sensitive to Yes and Side Sensitive to
No, load the paper normally.
This setting prohibits automatic rotation of the image by
the controller. Automatic rotation may be performed in
order to position the image correctly on the sheet for
finishing operations, or to match the page size (width
and length) to the size of the loaded media (width and
length, in this order). This setting is useful for special
media, such as preprinted media or letterhead.

Side Sensitive

Specifies that the paper is loaded upside down from

normal. This causes the second side to print first, and so
forces the paper through the duplex path, even for
simplex jobs. (This is not available for media that cannot
be duplexed or flipped.)

v Yes
v No
Yes = Prints back side first.

Use this setting when paper must be loaded upside down

due to pick or paper path issues, such as pre-punched
holes on the leading edge or a coated surface on one side
that does not pick reliably.
If you set Side Sensitive to Yes, load the paper upside
down by flipping the left and right edges as viewed
when facing the printer. This will move any pre-punched
holes on the leading edge to the trailing edge.
Note: If a paper has to be reversed because of coating
problems on one side, that paper will probably only need
to be defined Side Sensitive for either Trays 1 or 2, or for
the other trays, but not both (since Trays 1 and 2 are
normally loaded print side down and the others are
normally loaded print side up). To set the Side Sensitive
setting correctly, this paper should be defined twice,
depending on which side is face up when loaded in a
tray, or should be restricted to use only in the appropriate
type of tray.

Clearing paper jams

Look at the Control Panel display to see the section of the printer that is jammed.
The section that is jammed will be red. Go to the control panel and follow the
directions. The cover of the area that is jammed will usually have detailed
instructions on clearing the jam.

Recovering from a paper jam

Before you begin
You must set the following basic configuration items (Printer Definition PDL
IPDS) to allow automatic reprinting after a paper jam recovery:
v Reprint Pages after Jams: Must be set to either:
Yes
No

About this task

After some jams occur within the printer engine, the printer automatically reprints
certain pages as part of its recovery process. This happens only if the printer is
configured to allow reprinting.
After the automatic reprinting of pages, you must check for and discard any
duplicate pages that may have been printed. Locate the first reprinted page. Then
attempt to find that same page in the stacker or output bin. If you find it, discard
all duplicate pages.

50

InfoPrint Pro C900AFP: Operating the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP

If the printer is not configured to recover lost pages, you may need to ask the host
system console operator to do one of the following:
v Restart the job at the point where the output was lost
v Restart the entire job

Suggestions for preventing jams

The best way to prevent jams is to use paper and applications that were designed
for use with the printer. See InfoPrint Pro C900, Pro C900s (MFP), and C900AFP
Media Guide for more information.
Adjusting or repairing the printer cannot correct paper and application problems.
It is also important to ensure that the paper is loaded correctly. To prevent jams
from happening, do the following:
v Ensure that the paper is positioned correctly in the input bin.
v If the jam occurs only with one kind of paper, especially one that has not been
used before in the printer, the problem may be paper related. Paper that is
unusually heavy or light and paper that has holes or cuts are all likely to cause
jams.
v Paper orientation may have an effect on jam frequency.

Removing jammed staples

This section describes the procedure for removing jammed staples. Keep in mind
the following points when dealing with staple jams.
Note:
v Curled paper may cause staples to jam. To avoid this, try turning the paper over
in the tray.
v When the finisher is installed, after removing jammed staples, staples will not be
ejected the first few times you try to use the stapler.
v Remove the jammed staples according to the finisher type. Check the type if you
are unsure.

Responding to status messages

Status messages appear on the left side of the screen and describe the condition of
a printer or the system. Sometimes they are a response to operator action. Status
messages display in the status area of the Main touch panel.
Status messages appear only for your information and do not necessarily mean
that something is wrong. However, if a printer is not performing the way you
think it should, a status message can give you information about what to do.

Troubleshooting LAN connectivity and LAN communication problems

If you are having problems getting the printer to communicate over the Ethernet,
use the Network - LAN Status panel to check the status of the Ethernet adapter
that is in the installed state. Select Printer Definition Network Status LAN
Status... to display the Network - LAN Status panel.
v If the Actual Speed/Duplex value does not match the Desired Speed/Duplex
value, you may have the printer's configuration set to a value that is
incompatible with the Ethernet switch to which the printer is connected. The
speed and duplex setting of the printer must be set to the same value as the
switch. For example, if you set the printer for Auto, the switch port must also be
set for Auto; if you set the printer for 100 Full duplex, then the switch port must
also be set to 100 Full duplex.

Chapter 6. Taking care of problems

59

Note: An auto setting on the printer is only compatible if the setting on the
Ethernet switch is set to auto also. Example: A printer setting of Auto and a
setting on the Ethernet switch of 100 Full Duplex is not compatible.
v If the link is inactive, then check the Speed/Duplex setting. Also check the RJ45
cable connections at both ends of the Ethernet cable (the connection at the
printer and the connection to the wall or switch port).
v If the link is active and working correctly, you normally see the count of Octets
Received and Packets Received change every few seconds. If the link is active
but you do not see any numbers changing, the printer's network configuration
parameters may not be set correctly, or the Ethernet switch may not be
configured correctly. Check the printer's IP addressing information to be sure it
is correct. If these values are correct, contact your network administrator for
further assistance.
If you are using InfoPrint Manager to communicate with the printer and the
printer does not seem to respond quickly (within about 5 seconds) to InfoPrint
Manager printer-pause or job-cancel requests, use the Network - Remote Status
panel to check the SNMP status. Select Printer Definition Network Status
Remote Access Status... to display the Network - Remote Access Status panel for
SNMP status.
v Check IPDS Fast Path. A status line that says No Request Received or shows
a timestamp that is old (the time is shown as local time) means that the printer
has not received any Fast Path requests from the InfoPrint Manager system. This
may be caused by a firewall in the network path (between the InfoPrint
Manager system and the printer) that does not pass SNMP packets. Contact your
network administrator for further assistance.
Note: InfoPrint Manager attempts to use SNMP to obtain fast printer response
for pause and cancel even when the InfoPrint Manager printer icon has SNMP
set to Disabled.
v If SNMP status is Not Running, use the Network - Remote Access panel to set
remote access settings for SNMP. Select Printer Definition Network Remote
Access and select SNMP from the list. Select the Edit... button and set SNMP
Agent Enabled to Yes and Allow to Configure Printer to Yes.
If you have configured the printer to automatically send e-mail for printer status
changes, but the specified e-mail recipient is not receiving notifications by e-mail,
use the Network - Remote Access Status panel to determine the status of the e-mail
function in the printer. Select Printer Definition Network Status Remote
Access Status... to display the Network - Remote Access Status panel for E-mail
status.
v If E-mail status is Disabled, use the Network - Remote Access panel to set
remote access settings for e-mail. Select Printer Definition Network Remote
Access and select E-mail from the list. Select the Edit... button and set E-mail
Enabled to Yes and set the SMTP Mail Server Hostname or IP Address for
your installation. Contact your network administrator for the address of the mail
server for your installation.
v If E-mail status is Running, check the e-mail address of notifications that you
specified on the e-mail panel. Select Printer Definition Network Remote
Access and select E-mail from the list. Select the Edit... button and check the
e-mail settings for notifications. If this is correct, press the Show SMTP Log
button and check the log for errors. The log shows the interaction between the
printer's SMTP client and the SMTP server.

60

InfoPrint Pro C900AFP: Operating the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP

If you are trying to display the printer's Online Access (Web Pages) with a web
browser and the printer does not seem to respond, use the Network - Remote
Access Status panel to check the status of the printer's web server. Select Printer
Definition Network Status Remote Access Status... to display Online Access
status.
v If Online Access is Not Running, select Printer Definition Network Remote
Access and select Online Access from the list. Select the Edit... button and set
Online Access Enabled to Yes. The inability to display the printer's Online
Access web pages on a remote system may be caused by a firewall in the
network path (between the remote system and the printer) that does not pass
WEB traffic. Contact your network administrator for further assistance.

Traces
The Traces panel lets you save internal event traces, or capture a print job as an
aid in resolving problems. Internal event tracing is always active. The current state
of recent events is saved when you request that traces be saved. As a separate
action, the current in-progress job, or the next job to be processed, may be
captured.
Note: Enabling additional traces may affect performance.
This following sections provide procedures for:
v Saving traces to USB flash memory devices.
v E-mailing traces.
v Archiving traces to the hard drive on page 62.

Sudden Failures
If your printer has been operating satisfactorily for a reasonable period and then
suddenly fails, consider the following questions:
v Is the printer processing a new application?
v Is the printer using new media?
v Are media or other supplies being obtained from a new supplier?
v Have the Advanced Function Printing licensed programs been updated?

62

InfoPrint Pro C900AFP: Operating the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP

v Have any changes occurred in the operating system environment?

v Has the printer been re-cabled or moved?
v Have any configuration items been changed recently?
If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", that may be the cause of the
problem. Work with your system programmer, customer service specialist, or
application owner to resolve the situation.

Configuring remote access for SNMP

Use the Remote Access - SNMP panel to configure SNMP in the printer. SNMP
allows remote stations to report on printer status, receive notification of printer
error conditions, and control certain printer actions. To notify an SNMP trap host
of printer interventions, enter the IP address of the trap host system in the trap
table. To configure SNMP settings, select Printer Definition Network Remote
Access, select SNMP from the list, and select Edit....
Modify settings as appropriate and select OK.
The following industry standard SNMP MIBs are supported by the printer:
v Printer MIB v2 (RFC 3805, follow-on to RFC 1759)
v Host Resources (RFC 1514)

66

InfoPrint Pro C900AFP: Operating the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP

v MIB-2 (RFC 1213)

The ANSI files for these MIBs may be downloaded from many internet sites.

Configuring remote access for e-mail

The printer uses outgoing e-mail to automatically send notification of certain
printer conditions and for sending an internal trace (as an e-mail attachment) to a
support person for problem analysis.
Note: Before you can use e-mail, you must specify your mail server and primary
and secondary DNS servers. You can get these addresses from your network
administrator. Specify the addresses as follows:
v Specify the address of the primary and secondary DNS servers using the
Network Attachments panel (Printer Definition Network Attachments). On
the Network Attachments panel, select the active adapter, then select Edit.
v Specify the address of the mail server on your network in the Printer Definition
Network Remote Access then select Edit. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol) is a standard internet method for handling e-mail.
To configure e-mail settings, select Printer Definition Network Remote Access,
select E-mail from the list of remote access protocols, and then select the Edit...
button.
v To configure e-mail notification for printer conditions, enable the notification
function (set E-mail Enabled to YES), and specify an e-mail User ID for any or
all the following conditions: Printer Supplies E-mail Address, Printer Problems
E-mail Address, and Printer Service E-mail Address. You can specify multiple
e-mail user IDs separated by a space. When configured, an e-mail message is
automatically sent by the printer when a supplies, printer intervention, or
service condition is detected.
v To send a test message to confirm that the printer is configured correctly, select
Test.
v If you have problems sending e-mails, check the SMTP log. Select Show SMTP
Log to show the log. Select Clear SMTP Log to clear the log.

Configuring remote access for online access (web pages)

The printer can be accessed remotely using the Online Access (Web Pages)
protocol. To enable or disable online remote access or clear or display the online
access log, select Printer Definition Network Remote Access, select Online
Access (Web Pages) from the list, and select Edit....
To use the Remote Console, you must have remote access.

Managing color on the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP

After you have prepared your files for printing, you will need to ensure that the
printer is properly configured to print them. On the Color Management screen
(Printer Definition Color Management), make the appropriate selections for
your situation. The power of AFP provides a great deal of control in your printing
environment, but can be complex to manage.
More complex color management requirements are available in Printer Definition
Color Management Advanced. Changes made on that panel will be reflected in
Chapter 7. Printer configuration

Using Black/Gray Reproduction

Specifies the type of Black/Gray reproduction. Your options are:
v Force K Black/Gray
For RGB and Gray jobs, this option forces gray and black colors to use K-only
Black when ICC profile color processing is used.
v Preserve K Black/Gray
For CMYK jobs, this option preserves K-only Black regardless of ICC profile
color processing when your input job specifies K-only Black.
v Off
Standard Black/Gray reproduction method is used.

Using Default Rendering Intent

Specifies the default rendering intent for Image Data and Non-Image Data to use
for print jobs. Rendering intents indicate what you want a printer to do with colors
that are outside its gamut.
Note: If IPDS Color Management is not set to Use Color Management
Emulation, the color profile is only used for PDF print jobs.
v Perceptual

68

InfoPrint Pro C900AFP: Operating the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP

If an image includes any colors that are out-of-gamut for the printer, the printer
adjusts all the colors in the image, even those that are already in the gamut of
the printer, so they are all in-gamut and so they maintain their color
relationships to each other. The result is an image that is visually pleasing, but is
not colorimetrically accurate. The perceptual rendering intent is useful for
general reproduction of images, particularly photographs.
v Relative
If a print job includes colors that are out-of-gamut for the printer, the printer
substitutes the nearest in-gamut color; in-gamut colors are not adjusted. Colors
printed on papers with different media white points might not match visually.
The media white point is the color of the paper that the print job is printed on.
For example, if you print an image on white paper, on off-white paper, and on
blue paper using the media-relative colorimetric rendering intent, the printer
uses the same amount of ink or toner for each one and the resulting color is
technically the same. However, the images might seem different because your
eyes adjust to the color of the background and interpret the color differently.
This rendering intent is typically used for vector graphics.
v Saturation
If a print job includes colors that are out-of-gamut for the printer, the printer
replaces the out-of-gamut color with the nearest color in the gamut. It also
adjusts the in-gamut colors so that they are more vivid. Saturation is the least
used rendering intent, but it is useful for business graphics, such as images that
contain charts or diagrams.
v Absolute
All colors are mapped using the same method as the media-relative colorimetric
rendering intent, however, all colors are adjusted for the media white point. For
example, if you print an image on white paper, on off-white paper, and on blue
paper using the media-relative colorimetric rendering intent, the printer adjusts
the ink or toner used for each one. The resulting color is technically not same,
but the images might look the same because of the way your eyes interpret them
in relationship to the color of the paper. The absolute colorimetric rendering
intent is typically used for logos.

Using Printer Profiles

The Printer Profile drop-down menu allows you to select the ICC output printer
profile. The primary purpose of this profile is to adjust color for the type of media
being used and the amount of toner density desired.

Using PDF/IPDS Input Color and PDF Link Profiles

Specifies what color profile to use as input for print jobs. These define the profile
to use for the input color space. If you select Passthrough, no color management
will be performed for the Gray, RGB, or CMYK color space.
Note: If IPDS Color Management is not set to Use Color Management
Emulation, the color profile is only used for PDF print jobs.

Expert color adjustment

Note:
1. Ensure that the printer has been properly calibrated (see Color calibration on
page 71).

Chapter 7. Printer configuration

69

2. If you have used the correct CMR, ICC profile, or color management settings,
including the Printer Profile, and you want to fine tune the color, you can use
the Color Management Adjust button.
If you have already started printing and notice colors that need adjustment, you
can change the tone curves of the colors to compensate. Select Adjust to open the
Color Adjustment screen. There are two types of color adjustments:
v Color balance can be used to shift the intensities of colors from one hue to
another to achieve a neutral balance.
v Color curves can be used to give direct control over the colors that are
produced.
1. Choose a Library image from the drop-down menu at the top of the screen.
2. You can use the zoom control (1) to zoom into portions of the picture.
3. The tabs (2):
v Original - View the unchanged library image to help compare and observe
the changes that you make.
v Adjustments - Make additional color adjustments.
v Colors - Make a color selection from the library image.
4. The Adjustments tab allows you to adjust Brightness and Contrast (3), and
Color Balance (4).
5. The Color Balance tab is simpler and more intuitive adjustment for operator's
who are not as familiar with adjusting color.
6. The Color Curves tab is recommended for operator's who have more
experience adjusting color. There is a tone curve adjustment grid for each color.
This grid is separated by 3 vertical lines and 3 horizontal lines that represent
quarter tones. From the bottom left (0% tone), to the upper right (100% tone),
we see the junctions of the quarter-tones (5), the mid-tones (6), and the
three-quarter-tones (7).
v To increase the saturation of a tone, select a point in the grid above the line.
v To decrease the saturation of a tone, select a point in the grid below the line.
For example, in the figure below we have decreased the saturation of the
yellow mid-tones (8). You will see the results of this adjustment immediately in
the display. You can select Test Print to print some samples after you make the
adjustments.

Adjusting Calibration
About this task
If the difference between the expected reference state maximum density and the
calibrated state maximum density for one or more colors is negative, then this is
usually the result of a printer adjustment, an imaging surface defect, or toner or
developer with a substandard charge. To achieve a positive value for the difference
between the reference state and measured calibrated state, do these steps
iteratively, moving from step to step until a positive value is achieved:

Procedure
1. From the Control Panel, perform the following procedure:
a. User Tools Adj Skill Op SP3820 (Toner Density Adj)..
b. User Tools Maintenance Color Registration (MUSIC).
c. Calibrate and recheck numbers.
2. If still low:
a. User Tools Adjustment Settings for Operators SP2810 (Clear blurred
image).
b. User Tools Adjustment Settings for Operators SP3309 (Oil Removal
Mode).
c. User Tools Adjustment Settings for Operators SP2311 (Lube
Maintenance/ITB Clean).
d. Calibrate and recheck numbers.
3. If still low:
a. Print 50 A3 or 11" x 17" pages with 100% coverage of the offending color.
b. Calibrate and recheck numbers.
4. If still low:
a. Try step 1 again.
b. If after the second attempt with step 1 is still negative, then contact your
InfoPrint Solutions Company customer service representative.

amount of ink or toner for each one and the resulting
color is technically the same. However, the images
might seem different because your eyes adjust to the
color of the background and interpret the color
differently. This rendering intent is typically used for
vector graphics.

Table 19. Settings for Printer Definition Color Management (continued)

v Saturation
If a print job includes colors that are out-of-gamut for
the printer, the printer replaces the out-of-gamut color
with the nearest color in the gamut. It also adjusts the
in-gamut colors so that they are more vivid. Saturation
is the least used rendering intent, but it is useful for
business graphics, such as images that contain charts
or diagrams.
v Absolute
All colors are mapped using the same method as the
media-relative colorimetric rendering intent, however,
all colors are adjusted for the media white point. For
example, if you print an image on white paper, on
off-white paper, and on blue paper using the
media-relative colorimetric rendering intent, the printer
adjusts the ink or toner used for each one. The
resulting color is technically not same, but the images
might look the same because of the way your eyes
interpret them in relationship to the color of the paper.
The absolute colorimetric rendering intent is typically
used for logos.

Media Speed

Specifies the speed of the network connection. The Media

Speed setting includes both the speed and duplex setting.
The Media Speed setting of the printer must match the
media speed and duplex setting of the link partner
(usually an Ethernet switch). If you have difficulty
getting a connection to work, make sure that both the
speed and duplex settings of the printer and the link
partner are the same. For example, an Auto setting in the
printer may result in poor communication with a switch
port that is set to 100-Full. In this case, set both the
printer and the switch to Auto or 100-Full.
Note: For use with a gigabit link partner the printer must
be set to "Auto Negotiation".

have an IP address assigned to the printer at bootup. The
default setting is On. As part of the DHCP
communication, the printer requests that the DHCP
server register the printer's IP host name with the DNS
server.
v Off - the printer does not send DHCP addressing
requests.
v On - the printer attempts to get IP addressing using
the DHCP protocol.
Note:
1. The printer requests that the DHCP server register the
printer host name with a DNS server.
2. The printer attempts to obtain information from a
DHCP server up to the time limit specified in DHCP
Time Out.

DHCP Time Out

Specifies the number of seconds the printer waits for

responses from the DHCP server. A server will normally
respond in a few seconds; however, in network
configurations that include switches, a switch can block
network activity to or from a new station for a minute or
more. During this time the printer's DHCP broadcasts
may be blocked by the switch. Increasing the DHCP
Timeout value allows more time for the printer to retry
the DHCP broadcast and connect to the DHCP server.

DHCP Plug-and-Play Specifies if DHCP plug-and-play is enabled or disabled.
Enabling plug-and-play causes the printer to request
several values from the DHCP server. The values the
printer requests include: the address of the DNS servers,
SMTP server, Time server, SNTP server, and Time Zone.

v Enable
v Disable

The printer uses the values received from the DHCP

server to update its configuration. If no value is provided
by the DHCP server, the respective value is null.

Store all printer supplies in the printer operating environment for at least one day
before using them. At other times, you can store supplies in an environment that
does not exceed the following requirements:
Temperature
-20 to 40 degrees C (-4 to 104 degrees F)
Relative Humidity
5% to 90%

Storing paper
Paper goods have different storage requirements. Store paper in an area where
temperature and humidity are similar to the environment in which they will be
used. Wrinkles and voids can occur during printing on paper that is not able to
adapt to moisture changes.
Avoid areas of extreme heat or humidity. Extended exposure to these extremes can
permanently damage supplies. Exposing paper to relative humidity greater than
65% can reduce print quality.
Optimal paper storage values are:

116
