Preface
This publication is designed to provide information for operating the InfoPrint Pro
C900 Printer and the InfoPrint Pro C900AFP Print Controller.
The printers are inspected and listed by the National Recognized Testing
Laboratory. Listing of a product by the National Recognized Testing Laboratory
indicates that the product is designed and manufactured in accordance with
national requirements intended to minimize safety hazards. Remember,
however, that this product operates under conditions of high electrical potentials
and heat generation, both of which are functionally necessary.
SAFE0OES
Electrical Safety
Because the forms used in the printer can burn, you should take normal
precautions to prevent fire. These precautions include common-sense
measures, such as keeping potentially combustible materials (for example,
curtains and chemicals) away from the printer, providing adequate ventilation
and cooling, limiting unattended operation, and having trained personnel
available and assigned to the printer.

Operator tips
Use the information in the following sections to make good decisions when
operating the printer.
11
Toner
Follow these directions when adding or storing toner.
v Do not incinerate the photoconductor unit. Toner dust might ignite when
exposed to an open flame. Dispose of the used photoconductor unit in
accordance with local regulations.
v Avoid getting toner on your clothes or skin when removing a paper jam or
replacing toner. If your skin comes into contact with toner, wash the affected
area thoroughly with soap and water.
v If toner gets on your clothing, wash with cold water. Hot water will set the
toner into the fabric and may make removing the stain impossible.
v Do not open toner containers. Toner can spill, dirtying your clothes or hands,
and possibly resulting in accidental ingestion.
v Do not shake the removed toner cartridge. The remaining toner might scatter.
v Do not install and remove the toner cartridge over and over. This could result in
a toner leak.
v Only use the recommended type of toner.
v When adding toner, do not turn off the operation switch. If you do, settings will
be lost.
v Always add toner when the machine instructs you.
v Do not use recycled toner. This will damage the machine.
v As the toner is entering the printer the toner bottle will rotate. Do not touch the
toner bottle.
v You can change the toner bottle during printing.
v If toner remains in the bottle, you cannot pull it out. Do not remove the bottle
forcibly.
v Do not store toner, used toner, or toner containers in a place with an open flame.
The toner might ignite and cause burns or a fire.
v Store toner containers in a cool, dry place free from direct sunlight.
v Store toner on a flat surface.
v Follow the instructions on the toner carton for installing the new toner bottle.

Stapling jobs
Stapling is applied to the trailing edge of the paper as the paper moves through
the Finisher. The Console Job Setting refers to the location of the stapler in the
engine that fires. For example, the "Top" setting fires the stapler in the back of the
machine. This staple position may be different than the location in the Result
19
column when the other settings of the row are not as shown. For instance, if the
image is rotated, then the staple will not be on the top when the resulting output
is held in front of the user.
The stapled output combinations are shown the tables below. Correct output
depends upon the paper orientation in the input tray (LEF or SEF), the rotation
specified for the job (0 or 180), and the staple setting for the job (for example, Top).

Downloading Fonts
About Downloading Fonts
When a PDF job is received by the printer that requires a font that is not installed,
the job is marked ineligible. You can either change the job to allow font
substitution or cancel it. Make sure to download the font before sending the job to
the printer.
Note: A job that is ineligible remains ineligible even after the required font is
downloaded.
The printer provides the ability to download PostScript fonts to the printer. You
can use one or both of the following methods to download fonts to the printer:
v Use a vendor font download utility program that runs on an Apple Macintosh
computer.
v Download fonts in PostScript job files.
31
5. Select the AppleTalk protocol and press Enable. It may take 40 seconds or more
for the protocol to change from the enabling state to the enabled state.
Note: No print jobs are processed while the AppleTalk protocol is enabled. If
there are any jobs printing when you press the Enable button, the protocol
remains in the enabling state until printing is complete. Jobs that are sent to the
printer while the AppleTalk protocol is enabled will be spooled and queued for
later processing.
6. Confirm the AppleTalk configuration was successful by selecting the AppleTalk
protocol and then pressing Edit. Verify a value appears in the Network
Number field.
7. Start the font download application on the client machine and follow the
instructions to download the fonts to the printer. You may run the font
downloader application multiple times if you have multiple fonts or font
packages to download.
Note: The download of a single font or font package usually results in multiple
jobs in the printer. You can display these jobs from Job Manager.
8. When you are finished downloading fonts, select the AppleTalk protocol and
press Disable. It may take 40 seconds or more for the protocol to change from
the disabling state to the disabled state. If fonts were received by the printer, an
intervention message F321 Font files have been received. A restart is required
appears. The font download utility may also instruct you to restart the printer.
9. Restart the printer to start or resume printing. The AppleTalk protocol is
disabled by default when the printer restarts.
32
2. Set the FTP connection to binary mode using the binary or bin command.
3. Change the directory on the printer to the /fonts directory by entering cd
/fonts.
4. Send the font job to the printer. For example, the command put myfonts.ps
would send the file myfonts.ps to the fonts directory on the printer.
5. Enter the bye command to end the FTP connection
Downloading a font job using the LPR command
You can download a font job from a client machine to the "fonts" queue using the
lpr command. For example, you can enter the command lpr S myPrinter P
fonts myfonts.ps to download the file myfonts.ps. to the printer.
Copying a PostScript job file to the hot folder
You can copy the PostScript job file to the /fonts hot folder on the printer. See
Hot folders on page 26 for more information.
Downloading fonts using web pages
If you choose to download fonts from the web page, you must configure the
printer for remote access. See Configuring remote access for online access (web
pages) on page 67 for more information.
To download fonts using web pages, connect to the printer from a browser and
select Font Download from the Resources menu and press the Choose button.
Select the font job file name and then select Open. Select the Send File button to
download the file to the printer.

Defining media
Before you can print, you must establish settings for the media. If you save the
media assignments for each tray in a Snapshot, you need only load the Snapshot
instead of assigning the media to each tray one by one.
Use the Manage Media Edit screen to define the attributes of media used in the
printer, including length, width, and thickness. For media used for IPDS, you can
also define a name, a component ID, and color management settings including
weight, brightness, finish, and color.
To display the Manage Media panel, select Forms Manage Media.
Tasks:
v To define the attributes for the media, make changes on the panel and select
OK.
v To define color attributes for an IPDS media type that is loaded in the printer,
select the IPDS Color Management Resources tab.

Operator messages appear on the right side of the screen and display information
about how the printer is running. There are two types of operator messages:
warnings and interventions.
Warning messages do not stop the printer from printing, but if the problem is not
solved it could potentially cause problems.
Intervention and warning messages are displayed in a separate message window.
Intervention messages will stop printing and to restore the printer to the Ready
state, you must follow any recovery directions that appear in the message window.

Note: An auto setting on the printer is only compatible if the setting on the
Ethernet switch is set to auto also. Example: A printer setting of Auto and a
setting on the Ethernet switch of 100 Full Duplex is not compatible.
v If the link is inactive, then check the Speed/Duplex setting. Also check the RJ45
cable connections at both ends of the Ethernet cable (the connection at the
printer and the connection to the wall or switch port).
v If the link is active and working correctly, you normally see the count of Octets
Received and Packets Received change every few seconds. If the link is active
but you do not see any numbers changing, the printer's network configuration
parameters may not be set correctly, or the Ethernet switch may not be
configured correctly. Check the printer's IP addressing information to be sure it
is correct. If these values are correct, contact your network administrator for
further assistance.
If you are using InfoPrint Manager to communicate with the printer and the
printer does not seem to respond quickly (within about 5 seconds) to InfoPrint
Manager printer-pause or job-cancel requests, use the Network - Remote Status
panel to check the SNMP status. Select Printer Definition Network Status
Remote Access Status... to display the Network - Remote Access Status panel for
SNMP status.
v Check IPDS Fast Path. A status line that says No Request Received or shows
a timestamp that is old (the time is shown as local time) means that the printer
has not received any Fast Path requests from the InfoPrint Manager system. This
may be caused by a firewall in the network path (between the InfoPrint
Manager system and the printer) that does not pass SNMP packets. Contact your
network administrator for further assistance.
Note: InfoPrint Manager attempts to use SNMP to obtain fast printer response
for pause and cancel even when the InfoPrint Manager printer icon has SNMP
set to Disabled.
v If SNMP status is Not Running, use the Network - Remote Access panel to set
remote access settings for SNMP. Select Printer Definition Network Remote
Access and select SNMP from the list. Select the Edit... button and set SNMP
Agent Enabled to Yes and Allow to Configure Printer to Yes.
If you have configured the printer to automatically send e-mail for printer status
changes, but the specified e-mail recipient is not receiving notifications by e-mail,
use the Network - Remote Access Status panel to determine the status of the e-mail
function in the printer. Select Printer Definition Network Status Remote

WEB traffic. Contact your network administrator for further assistance.
Traces
The Traces panel lets you save internal event traces, or capture a print job as an
aid in resolving problems. Internal event tracing is always active. The current state
of recent events is saved when you request that traces be saved. As a separate
action, the current in-progress job, or the next job to be processed, may be
captured.
Note: Enabling additional traces may affect performance.
This following sections provide procedures for:
v Saving traces to USB flash memory devices.

If an image includes any colors that are out-of-gamut for the printer, the printer
adjusts all the colors in the image, even those that are already in the gamut of
the printer, so they are all in-gamut and so they maintain their color
relationships to each other. The result is an image that is visually pleasing, but is
not colorimetrically accurate. The perceptual rendering intent is useful for
general reproduction of images, particularly photographs.
v Relative
If a print job includes colors that are out-of-gamut for the printer, the printer
substitutes the nearest in-gamut color; in-gamut colors are not adjusted. Colors
printed on papers with different media white points might not match visually.
The media white point is the color of the paper that the print job is printed on.
For example, if you print an image on white paper, on off-white paper, and on
blue paper using the media-relative colorimetric rendering intent, the printer
uses the same amount of ink or toner for each one and the resulting color is
technically the same. However, the images might seem different because your
eyes adjust to the color of the background and interpret the color differently.
This rendering intent is typically used for vector graphics.
v Saturation
If a print job includes colors that are out-of-gamut for the printer, the printer
replaces the out-of-gamut color with the nearest color in the gamut. It also
adjusts the in-gamut colors so that they are more vivid. Saturation is the least
used rendering intent, but it is useful for business graphics, such as images that
contain charts or diagrams.
v Absolute
All colors are mapped using the same method as the media-relative colorimetric
rendering intent, however, all colors are adjusted for the media white point. For
example, if you print an image on white paper, on off-white paper, and on blue
paper using the media-relative colorimetric rendering intent, the printer adjusts
the ink or toner used for each one. The resulting color is technically not same,
but the images might look the same because of the way your eyes interpret them
in relationship to the color of the paper. The absolute colorimetric rendering
intent is typically used for logos.
69
2. If you have used the correct CMR, ICC profile, or color management settings,
including the Printer Profile, and you want to fine tune the color, you can use
the Color Management Adjust button.
If you have already started printing and notice colors that need adjustment, you
can change the tone curves of the colors to compensate. Select Adjust to open the
Color Adjustment screen. There are two types of color adjustments:
v Color balance can be used to shift the intensities of colors from one hue to
another to achieve a neutral balance.
v Color curves can be used to give direct control over the colors that are
produced.
1. Choose a Library image from the drop-down menu at the top of the screen.
2. You can use the zoom control (1) to zoom into portions of the picture.
3. The tabs (2):
v Original - View the unchanged library image to help compare and observe
the changes that you make.
v Adjustments - Make additional color adjustments.
v Colors - Make a color selection from the library image.
4. The Adjustments tab allows you to adjust Brightness and Contrast (3), and
Color Balance (4).
5. The Color Balance tab is simpler and more intuitive adjustment for operator's
who are not as familiar with adjusting color.
6. The Color Curves tab is recommended for operator's who have more
experience adjusting color. There is a tone curve adjustment grid for each color.
This grid is separated by 3 vertical lines and 3 horizontal lines that represent
quarter tones. From the bottom left (0% tone), to the upper right (100% tone),
we see the junctions of the quarter-tones (5), the mid-tones (6), and the
three-quarter-tones (7).
v To increase the saturation of a tone, select a point in the grid above the line.
v To decrease the saturation of a tone, select a point in the grid below the line.
For example, in the figure below we have decreased the saturation of the
yellow mid-tones (8). You will see the results of this adjustment immediately in
the display. You can select Test Print to print some samples after you make the
adjustments.

Adjusting Calibration
About this task
If the difference between the expected reference state maximum density and the
calibrated state maximum density for one or more colors is negative, then this is
usually the result of a printer adjustment, an imaging surface defect, or toner or
developer with a substandard charge. To achieve a positive value for the difference
between the reference state and measured calibrated state, do these steps
iteratively, moving from step to step until a positive value is achieved:
Procedure
1. From the Control Panel, perform the following procedure:
a. User Tools Adj Skill Op SP3820 (Toner Density Adj)..
b. User Tools Maintenance Color Registration (MUSIC).
c. Calibrate and recheck numbers.
2. If still low:
a. User Tools Adjustment Settings for Operators SP2810 (Clear blurred
image).
b. User Tools Adjustment Settings for Operators SP3309 (Oil Removal
Mode).
c. User Tools Adjustment Settings for Operators SP2311 (Lube
Maintenance/ITB Clean).
d. Calibrate and recheck numbers.
3. If still low:
a. Print 50 A3 or 11" x 17" pages with 100% coverage of the offending color.
b. Calibrate and recheck numbers.
4. If still low:
a. Try step 1 again.
b. If after the second attempt with step 1 is still negative, then contact your
InfoPrint Solutions Company customer service representative.

Storing supplies
Store all printer supplies in the printer operating environment for at least one day
before using them. At other times, you can store supplies in an environment that
does not exceed the following requirements:
Temperature
-20 to 40 degrees C (-4 to 104 degrees F)
Relative Humidity
5% to 90%
Storing paper
Paper goods have different storage requirements. Store paper in an area where
temperature and humidity are similar to the environment in which they will be
used. Wrinkles and voids can occur during printing on paper that is not able to
adapt to moisture changes.
Avoid areas of extreme heat or humidity. Extended exposure to these extremes can
permanently damage supplies. Exposing paper to relative humidity greater than
65% can reduce print quality.
Optimal paper storage values are:
116
Temperature
13 to 27 degrees C (55 to 80 degrees F)
Relative Humidity
40% to 60%
Always store paper on a flat surface. Never store paper vertically.
Do not store paper where it will be exposed to direct sunlight.

For information on disposal of batteries outside the United States, contact your
local waste disposal facility.
Notice: This mark applies only to countries within the European Union (EU),
Norway, and Switzerland.
Appliances are labeled in accordance with European Directive 2002/96/EC
concerning waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The Directive
determines the framework for the return and recycling of used appliances as
applicable throughout the European Union. This label is applied to various
products to indicate that the product is not to be thrown away, but rather
reclaimed upon end of life per this Directive.
In accordance with the European WEEE Directive, electrical and electronic
equipment (EEE) is to be collected separately and to be reused, recycled, or
recovered at end of life. Users of EEE with the WEEE marking per Annex IV of the
WEEE Directive, as shown above, must not dispose of end of life EEE as unsorted
municipal waste, but use the collection framework available to customers for the
return, recycling and recovery of WEEE. Customer participation is important to
minimize any potential effects of EEE on the environment and human health due
to the potential presence of hazardous substances in EEE. For proper collection and
treatment, contact your local InfoPrint Solutions Company representative.
