Under the Sea

Created by your hero (you know its true!)

Narrated by Mr. Brennans alter ego-Aquaman

Buoyancy
I was racing around in
my boat the other day,
and I started to
wonder...what makes
this totally rad boat
float? Do any of you
brainiacs know why?

What I want you to do...

While Im posing, like
any really tough guy
would do, talk to your
neighbor about what
makes things float.
Well share our ideas in
60 crashes of the
waves.

Then how does this work?

How can a big, heavy ship like this
actually float?

-The largest ship in the world is the

Jahre Viking, an oil-carrying tanker.
-This super-sized ship is 1,504 feet
long and 264 feet wide, longer than 5
football fields laid end-to-end.
-If the Empire State building was laid
on its side, the Jahre Viking would be
longer by 253 feet!
-Crew members use bicycles to get
from place to place on the ship.

Its all about BUOYANCY...my finned friends

BUOYANCY = the ability to float in
a fluid.
Examples of fluids = water, air

BUOYANT FORCE = the upward

force that acts on a submerged
object.
It acts opposite of gravity

My buddy Archimedes
Archimedes' principle:
if the weight of the object
being placed in the water
is less than the weight of
the water displaced
(moved), the object will
float.

our high school swim
team.

What I really want...

I want you to make a
drawing and describe
the visual that I will
show you as I perform
magic!!!!

You want a Coke Float?

Watch this and explain

why.

I wish I was as smart as

your teacher!

How CAN you explain it?

-What did you see?
-The diet coke floats & the regular sinks.
-Why does the diet float??
-Regular soda contains 39 grams of sugar.
-Diet coke contains 100 mg of Nutra-sweet.
-More "stuff" (matter) is crammed into the same amount of
space, or VOLUME, and that increases the MASS.
-The relationship of Mass to Volume is Density.

So ICE floats? Really?

Really...check this out!

He is so much smarter
than me!

Can you explain it?
