Are you the kind of person who thinks shopping is fun? If you are, then youll probably be surprised to hear
about a special day called Buy Nothing Day. On this day, people are encouraged to keep their purses in their
pockets or bags and not spend ANY money!
Buy Nothing Day (BND) is a yearly international protest against harmful western shopping habits. Whats being
protested against and whats wrong with our consumer culture? For one thing, we are seriously influenced by
advertising and this makes people spend money on things they dont need and dont even really want. Many
people find themselves in debt because of this. In addition, at our local supermarkets, there are many products
in fancy packages. Producing these unnecessary packages uses up raw materials, wastes energy and pollutes
the environment. A third problem is that rich western countries own factories in developing countries and use
cheap local labour to produce their products. The workers rights arent protected at all and the factory owners
arent careful about protecting the local environment. These are just some examples of how our lives and our
environment are affected by our consumer culture and there are many more.
Buy Nothing Day was started in 1992 by a group of concerned people in the United States. It is in November,
on the day after the holiday of Thanksgiving, which traditionally is the day when people in the USA start their
Christmas shopping. Since 1992, 65 countries have joined the BND protest. In the city of Brighton in England,
workshops are offered on BND, where people can have fun and make free Christmas gifts as an alternative to
Christmas shopping. Believers in BND hope that people around the world will change their consumer lifestyle,
and not only for one day a year!
